Bamboo show and sale on tap
ENCINITAS ---- The Southern California chapter of the American Bamboo Society will present the "World's Best Bamboo Show and Sale" on April 15 at Quail Botanical Gardens, 230 Quail Gardens Drive.
The event will feature more than 100 varieties of bamboo grown by collectors and local growers. Bamboo crafts and products also will be available.
The schedule is as follows: 9 to 10:30 a.m., sale preview; 10:30 a.m., rare bamboo auction; 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., plant sale; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., bamboo crafts and products sale.
Admission prices are $8 for adults; $5 for seniors, students and active military; $3 for children ages 3 to 12; free for kids younger than 3 and Quail Botanical Gardens and American Bamboo Society members.

Bead Society to meet April 15
SAN DIEGO ---- The Bead Society of San Diego will meet at 10 a.m. April 15 at the Mingei Museum in Balboa Park.
The group will present a screening of "The Tiny Mighty Bead," the second episode in Diana Friedberg's "World on a String" four-part series.

Osher Institute classes to begin
NORTH COUNTY ---- Cal State San Marcos Extended Studies' Osher Lifelong Learning Institute recently released its spring class schedule. The noncredit courses are scheduled on weekdays from April 24 through June 2 in Escondido and Oceanside. The classes are taught by professors and experts in specific subject matters and meet for 12 hours over five or six weeks. The institute is open to adults ages 50 and older regardless of prior education.
Classes are held in the Conference Room at the Escondido Chamber of Commerce building, 720 N. Escondido Blvd., and in the Zalvidea Room at Mission San Luis Rey, 4050 Mission Ave., Oceanside.

Career Day planned at Palomar College

Parent Advocates Seeking Solutions to meet

'Home Kids' author to speak
RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Palomar branch of the National League of American Pen Women will meet at 1 p.m. April 21 in the Seminar Room at the Rancho Bernardo Library, 17110 Bernardo Center Drive.
Letters member Nancy Canfield will discuss her recently published book "Home Kids: The Story of St. Agatha Home for Children," which tells the story of how Canfield and some of her nine brothers and sisters came to be placed in the orphanage, as well as the stories of others who lived there. All proceeds from the book go to St. Agatha's.

Sons of Norway to meet April 22
VISTA ---- Sons of Norway, Norge Lodge 60, meets monthly to preserve and promote Norwegian heritage and culture.
"Ole and Lena Night" will be held April 22 at the lodge, 2006 E. Vista Way. Social hour will begin at 5 p.m., with the group's fifth annual codfish dinner to begin at 6. A comedy presentation by Ole and Lena will follow.

Learn how to enter county fair

PFLAG group to meet April 23
CARLSBAD ---- Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, or PFLAG, a parent-led support and information organization, will meet at 2 p.m. April 23 at the Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 2020 Chestnut Ave.
PFLAG invites anyone having difficulties understanding gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender issues to attend the meeting, especially when family relationships are disrupted. Family members, as well as GLBT people, are invited to join in discussions of mutual support. Call (619) 922-1579.
Toy drive to benefit abused children
NORTH COUNTY ---- April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and San Diego area The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf stores have teamed up with the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation for a toy drive to help raise awareness of the issue and provide comfort items to local kids who have been abused.
Through April 30, residents can help by donating a new toy at any The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf store in San Diego County, including these North County locations: 12070 Carmel Mountain Road, Suite 296, Carmel Mountain Ranch; 2689 Via de la Valle, Suite E, Del Mar; 2508 El Camino Real, Suite F, Carlsbad; and 1935 Calle Barcelona, Suite 176, Carlsbad. Requested items include gift cards, teddy bears, board games, art supplies, sporting equipment and books.
Artist to lead class, workshop
OCEANSIDE ---- Rancho Bernardo artist Jane LaFazio will teach a class in art quilts from 9 a.m. to noon Fridays, April 28 through June 2, at the Oceanside Museum of Art School of Art. Cost is $95; $75 for OMA members, plus a $30 materials fee to be paid in class.
In addition, LaFazio will conduct a two-day Portable Fabric Shrine Workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. June 10 and 24 at the OMA School of Art. Cost is $90; $70 for OMA members.

Polish-American group plans dinner
ESCONDIDO ---- The Polish American Social Club of North San Diego County will hold its Easter Dinner on April 29 at American Legion Hall, 230 Park Ave. The event will include the traditional coloring of eggs, or "pisanki," and an Easter hat parade.
Social time will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a meeting scheduled for 5. Dinner and dancing will follow.

Club offers activities for single seniors
NORTH COUNTY ---- The North County Singles Club, a friendship organization dedicated to providing activities for single seniors ages 55 and older, is seeking new members.
The group's principal activity is dancing, most frequently on Friday evenings at the Vista Elks Lodge, 1947 E. Vista Way, Vista. Dinner is served at 5:30 p.m. and dancing to live music begins at 6:30. The cost is $11, which includes dinner, either menu or buffet. Other fun activities that offer opportunities for socializing also are planned. Reservations are required for all events.
The group will hold a Cinco de Mayo dinner-dance May 7 at the Escondido Country Club. Music will be provided by Bill Harper. Cost is $23.

Brooklyn College alumni to gather
RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The San Diego Brooklyn College Alumni Association will hold a reunion from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 7 at the Eastview Community Center in Rancho Bernardo.
Brooklyn College President Christoph Kimmich will speak on "Brooklyn College Now and in the Future." Kimmich and Brooklyn College Vice President Andrew Sillen will be available to answer questions.

Volunteer camp counselors sought
SAN DIEGO ---- Volunteer counselors are needed for Camp Reach for the Sky, a camp for pediatric cancer patients sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Training will be provided.
Resident Oncology Camp, for patients ages 8 to 18, will run from Aug. 14 through 19 at Camp Marston in Julian. A Sibling Camp, for patients' brothers and sisters ages 8 to 18, will be held June 26 through July 1 at Camp Cedar Glen, also in Julian.
Volunteers must be age 21 or older and are required to stay at the campsite during the entire duration of the camp. Male counselors especially are needed.

Sen. Morrow names Women of the Year
CARLSBAD ---- Sen. Bill Morrow recently recognized four local women for their volunteerism, honoring them as 2006 Women of the Year. They are Adrienne "Andy" Kotner, president of San Diego County Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse; Ursula Wagstaff-Kuster, a businesswoman and volunteer extraordinaire; Debora Leitner, owner of Kingdom Advancement Inc. and founder/president of Global Way Makers; and Linda Chick, a retired teacher and leader in literacy and education issues.
