AARP offers driving classes


FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook Senior Center will offer the AARP Safe Driving Program beginning at 8:30 a.m. May 2 and 16 at the center, 399 Heald Lane. Call (760) 728-4498 for reservations. CROP Walk nets $68,000


FALLBROOK ---- More than 400 people took part in the recent Fallbrook CROP Walk for Hunger. Organizers say the walk netted about $68,000, about $10,000 less than last year. However, they say they're still pleased with the results. Overall, more than 2,000 sponsors donated, but there were two new ones of significance.

The Mission Theatre and CAST Production donated the proceeds from their April 1 talent show, a total of $1,200; and the Fallbrook Ministerial Association contributed $1,000.

Concert benefits Santa Margarita Foundation


FALLBROOK ---- No Egrets Productions will hold a benefit concert for the Santa Margarita Foundation from 7 to 10 p.m. June 30 at the Mission Theater, 230 N. Main St.

The show features four acts scheduled with local entertainers Robin Adler and David Blackburn headlining the bill. Other performers are the San Diego duo Berkley Hart, who have just released their fourth CD; and singer songwriter Deborah Liv Johnson. Opening the show will be singer and guitar player Chip Lyon, a new Fallbrook resident.

The Santa Margarita River Foundation was founded in 1984. Its mission is to protect the Santa Margarita River and its watershed. The Santa Margarita River is the last free-flowing coastal river in Southern California. Currently the Foundation is mobilizing to fight the efforts of Granite Construction Corporation to site the proposed Liberty Quarry adjacent to the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve. Music society wraps up season


FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook Music Society will conclude its 2005-06 concert season April 30 with a solo performance by 18-year old Russian violin virtuoso Anastasia Agapova, who is appearing with the 80-member Redlands Symphony Orchestra. The performance will take place at 3 p.m. at the Bob Burton Center for the Performing Arts on the Fallbrook High School campus. At 2:30 p.m., conductor Jon Robertson will give a preview of the upcoming concert.

From age 12, Agapova's talent has been recognized with top prizes in national and international competitions, culminating with the second prize at the 2004 International Competition for Young Violinists in Novosibirsk, Russia. As a soloist, Agapova has appeared with numerous orchestras in her native Russia, and has also performed in recitals throughout Europe.

The concert will feature Agapova as solo performer for German composer Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1.

The musicians also will perform Tchaikovsky's Marche Slave, Op. 31.

The last presentation of the concert features German composer Richard Strauss' "Thus Spake Zarathustra," which became famous in 1968 as the music accompanying the opening "dawn" sequence and the theme for the Stanley Kubrick film "200l ---- A Space Odyssey."

Church hosts men's breakfast


BONSALL ---- Riverview Evangelical Free Church's new lead pastor the Rev. Mike Fleischmann will be the featured speaker at the "Men on Purpose" breakfast at 7 a.m. May 13. The breakfast, at a $5 per ticket, will take place in conjunction with a loft house build, so that those who would like to may stay and help pre-construct a loft house for future delivery to a site in Mexico.

Sign-ups are underway for the 2006 Men's Retreat May 19 through 21 at Palomar Christian Conference Center. Speaker Dean Wiebracht's topic will be "Footsteps to Follow: Four Men Who Set The Pace," focusing on key character qualities in the lives of four lesser-known people in the New Testament.

The weekend includes two nights lodging, all-you-can-eat meals, structured sessions and free time. Fallbrook Land Conservancy recognizes donors


FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook Land Conservancy honored those who made contributions of land and cash to the organization during its recent sixth annual Emerald Grove Recognition dinner at the Grand Tradition. The organization also celebrated its 2005 highlights.

They included a donation of four acres from Bert Hitt, John Hitt, and Kurt and Johannah Oliver which will allow expansion of the trail system on the Monserate Mountain Preserve.

Malabar Ranch signed an agreement to deed 24 acres to the conservancy. The preserve will be called the Arthur Appleton Conservation Area and it is a riparian habitat along La Canada Road.

Other land donors included Howard and Nancy Dinwiddie, Dr. Rodger Engle, George and Julie Gewehr, Otis and Linda Heald, Joseph and Marie Mullin, Albert and Florence Pinamonti, Vince and Joy Ross, Inez Sorgenfrei and the Pamela Van Der Linden Family.

The conservancy's Save Our Forest group has planted more than 1,000 trees and shrubs on conservancy preserves.

Another group, the Friends of Los Jilgueros Preserve, continued its maintenance of that property. The trails council repaired the flood-damaged Santa Margarita trail system.

Eagle Scout projects, combined with support from Emerald Grove donors, resulted in construction of a new trail on Rock Mountain and improved trails on Monserate Mountain.

Work by the membership committee resulted in the addition of 100 new members.

The education committee developed planting projects with schools and sponsored talks by experts on native flora and fauna.

Plans for the coming year include:

- Working with Camp Pendleton, the Trust for Public Land, the Nature Conservancy, the Wildlife Conservation Board and San Diego State University as part of the Department of Defense's initiative to protect open space buffers around Camp Pendleton.

- A grant from the Resource Conservation Service will enable the land conservancy to fence Bonsall Preserve property, remove invasive plants and replace them with native trees and plants. Other plans include improving the habitat on Monserate Mountain and improving the hiking trails there and on Rock Mountain.

- The Save Our Forest group, in cooperation with the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance and students at La Paloma Elementary School, will undertake a major planting effort along a portion of the Pico Promenade.

Conner's Cause tournament benefits sick kids

Deadline approaches for college scholarship

Lavender Fields to open in May


VALLEY CENTER ---- The Lavender Fields will be open throughout the week, as well as on weekends, for its summer 2006 season. Barnes & Noble to host benefit event


NORTH COUNTY ---- All San Diego County Barnes & Noble and Bookstar stores will host fundraiser events April 30 to benefit the KPBS Radio Reading Service.

The stores will donate 15 to 20 percent of all bookfair voucher purchases to the reading service, which broadcasts volunteer readings of newspapers, books and magazines to those unable to read independently. The nonprofit organization was established in 1975, airs 24 hours a day and has more than 100 local volunteers serving more than 2,000 listeners throughout the county.

The stores also will host story times that day with mayors of several local communities, including Mayor Lori Pfeiler of Escondido, who will read at 2 p.m. in the Escondido store. Also at the Escondido store, "Luann" syndicated comic strip creator Greg Evans will make an appearance at 12:30 p.m. and NPR's "A Way With Words" hosts Richard Lederer and Martha Barnette will be in the store at 6 p.m.

At 11 a.m., guest readers from the KPBS Radio Reading Service will be at story time at the Carmel Mountain Ranch store.

Show to feature vintage paper collectibles

Families sought to host exchange students

World Heritage, a public benefit organization, is seeking local families to host high school students from France, Germany, Thailand, Japan, Russia, China, Switzerland, Denmark and Italy for the 2006-07 academic year.

Host families provide room, board and guidance for a teenager living thousands of miles from home. Each student is fully insured, brings their own personal spending money and expects to bear their share of household responsibilities, as well as being included in normal family activities and lifestyles.

Blood drive planned for April 25


RANCHO BERNARDO ---- Cymer Inc., at 17075 Thornmint Court, will host a San Diego Blood Bank blood drive from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 25. The bloodmobile will be in the Building 4 parking lot.

All donors at this drive will receive a limited-edition San Diego Blood Bank T-shirt and other gifts. Donors also will receive a medical history review and mini physical, which includes blood pressure, pulse and temperature checks.

Anyone age 17 or older in good health and weighing at least 110 pounds may be eligible to donate blood. Eating a good meal before donating is recommended.

Stamping Details offers classes


POWAY ---- Stamping Details, at 14009 Midland Road, will offer these classes.

- "New Stamps 4 U Card Making," 6 to 8 p.m. April 25. Leila Steineckert, a frequent guest on HGTV's "The Carol Duvall Show," will use the latest designs from Stamping Details' line of rubber stamps for cards and other projects. Using new designs by local tole-painting artist Shara Reiner, along with paper cords, wires and other embellishments, participants can make as many cards as time permits in this class. Mystery writer to speak

Brandeis group to hold book sale


RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Rancho Bernardo chapter of Brandeis University National Women's Committee will hold its annual book sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 28 in front of the Vons store at 11986 Bernardo Plaza Drive. Preschool plans carnival, auction


RAMONA ---- The Little People's Learning Center, a nonprofit preschool, will hold a silent auction and carnival fundraiser from 4 to 6:30 p.m. April 29 at the center, 3394 Chapel Lane.

The event will include carnival games, fun house, inflatable jump house, magic show, spaghetti dinner and silent auction. The goal is to raise $10,000 to expand the facility and continue to provide scholarships to families in need.

Food distribution program available

POWAY ---- Poway Share is a nonprofit, nondenominational food distribution program committed to building healthy families by providing affordable groceries. It is open to everyone and has no income or age requirements. The prepackaged groceries are first-quality food items, not donated items or government surplus.

Participants are asked to pay for their May packages by May 5. Cash or checks may be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. weekdays at the Poway Senior Center, 13094 Civic Center Drive. Online payments via PayPal will be accepted through May 7 at http://www.members.cox.net/poway.share.

Packages can be picked up between 8 and 9 a.m. May 20 at the Poway Senior Center. Participants also can pay for June food packages at this time.

The food packages for May are as follows:

- Regular Pack, $21: one whole chicken, 4-to 6-ounce pork chops, 1 pound of ground beef, 1 pound of ground turkey, a dozen eggs, 1 pound of seedless grapes, one apples/oranges combo pack, bag of potatoes, bag of onions, celery, lettuce, cantaloupe, 1 pound of baby carrots and two bell peppers.

- Veggie Pack, $16: one dozen eggs, bag of potatoes, bag of onions, lettuce, one apples/oranges combo pack, two mangos, four lemons, celery, cantaloupe, cauliflower, 1 pound of seedless grapes, 1 pound of carrots, two bell peppers and a basket of strawberries.

- Junior Pack, $16: one whole chicken, 4-to 6-ounces pork chops, a dozen eggs, one apples/oranges combo pack, a bag of potatoes, bag of onions, celery, lettuce and cantaloupe.

- Meat Pack Plus, $21: one whole chicken, 4- to 6-ounce pork chops, two pounds of ground beef, 1 pound of ground turkey, two pounds of mild Italian sausage, 1 pound of bacon and three pounds of hot link sausages

Sheriff's Department seeks senior volunteers


RAMONA ---- The San Diego County Sheriff's Department's Ramona Substation is seeking men and women who want to help their community as members of the Senior Volunteer Patrol. Volunteers must be at least 50 years old, U.S. citizens and of good moral character and have a valid California driver's license and medical and automobile insurance. Vacation home checks available


RAMONA ---- Members of the Ramona Sheriff's Substation's Senior Volunteer Patrol perform a number of duties traditionally performed by sworn deputies, including vacation home security checks. While checking on homes, patrol members on occasion have discovered broken water lines, malfunctioning pool equipment and bees swarming into houses. Blood donors sought for May 7 drive


SAN MARCOS ---- Donors are being sought for a San Diego Blood Bank blood drive hosted by the Kiwanis Club of San Marcos during the city's Land of Oz Munchkin Street Fair on May 7. The blood drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the San Marcos Civic Center parking lot, 3 Civic Center Drive.

Potential donors are asked to call the Kiwanis call center at (760) 471-3201 to register. Although walk-ins are welcome, those with appointments will be taken first. All donors will be awarded a San Diego Blood Bank T-shirt, their choice of one free adult ticket for an upcoming Theatre West production or an upcoming "Summer in the Garden" concert ticket. They also will have the opportunity to meet Margaret Pelligrini and Clarence Swenson, "Munchkin" stars from the original "Wizard of Oz" movie. Donors who arrive before 11 a.m. also can enter a drawing to have lunch with Pelligrini and Swenson that day.

Environmental Day at MiraCosta

Rotary hold work day


OCEANSIDE ---- The Rotary Club of Oceanside will gather April 29 in an organized effort to improve the city and surrounding area by working all day cleaning bike trails, removing graffiti and repairing computers. The 100 members of the club will come together to make the Rotarians at Work project successful and beneficial to the community. Interact Club members from Oceanside High School and the School of Business and Technology also will participate. Work will begin at 8 a.m. and end at noon. A total of 60 clubs in San Diego and Imperial counties will be working in their own communities with a variety of public service projects on the same day, the first time a wide-spread public service project has been attempted on a district-wide level.

Travel club visits Hearst Castle, Nixon library


OCEANSIDE ---- Oceanside Senior Center's Happy Wanderers travel club is planning a three-day, two-night trip to Morro Bay June 6 to 8. Cost is $305 per person double occupancy and includes round-trip bus transportation and lunch at the Madonna Inn; continental breakfast and tour of Hearst Castle, shopping in Cambria and a dinner cruise aboard the Tiger Folly with complimentary champagne; continental breakfast at hotel and lunch in Solvang. Reservation deposit is due May 5.
