Reche club plans country sale
FALLBROOK ---- The Reche Community Club will sponsor a country sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 20 on the school grounds. Sale chairmen are Doris Ham and Frances Hubert. Proceeds from the sale will be used to support and maintain the one-room school that was built in 1896.
The Reche Club was formed in 1934 to maintain the school, which functioned as a one-room schoolhouse for grades one through eight until 1939. The club continues to preserve and maintain the school for Fallbrook. It has two fundraisers a year. One is the chicken potpie dinner in the fall. This is the second year for the country yard sale.
The public is asked to donate saleable new or used items for the sale. Donations are tax deductible. To donate, contact Frances Hubert at (760) 723-3162, or Mildred Straight at (760) 728-3607.
Surplus produce being collected
FALLBROOK ---- Surplus fruit and vegetables to be donated to families on Camp Pendleton will be collected from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 2 and 3 at the Fallbrook Church of Religious Science at 331 E. Prom planned for seniors
FALLBROOK ---- A prom for senior citizens will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. April 28 at the Joslyn Senior Center, 399 Heald Lane. Host is the Fallbrook High School Associated Student Body. Prom theme is "The Way You Look Tonight." Those attending are encouraged to dress in formal attire.
Vacancies remain for bus trip
FALLBROOK ---- Eight seats remain for the Fallbrook Seniors trip to the Four Queens May 2, 3 and 4 in Las Vegas. Cost is $103 per person, double occupancy; $140, single occupancy. Loading begins at 8:30 a.m. from the center at 399 Heald Lane, and there will be a rest stop in Barstow both ways. Departure from the casino is 10:30 a.m. May 4, and the bus is due in Fallbrook about 4 p.m. There will be bingo and a movie on the trip.
The group also is sponsoring a trip to Valley View Casino May 27. Cost is $7. The bus loads at 7:45 a.m. and departs at 8 a.m. from the senior center. For reservations, call the center office at (760) 728-4498 or Dee at (760) 723-7469. It is not necessary to be a senior to go.
Library offers programs for older people
FALLBROOK ---- In recognition of May being Older Americans Month, coupled with the fact that the first Baby Boomers turn 60 in 2006, the Fallbrook Library along with other county branches is offering several programs for this population.
In Fallbrook, there will be a session on Internet for Seniors with instructor Jaycita Byrne from SeniorNet from 9 to 10 a.m. May 16. She will cover searching for information on the Internet, handling a mouse, understanding computer language and setting up an e-mail account.

Fire Safe Council meets monthly
VISTA ---- The Greater Vista Fire Safe Council holds its monthly meetings from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. the third Monday of each month at the Vista Library, 700 Eucalyptus Ave. The next meeting is May 15.
The purpose of a Fire Safe Council is to bring together public and private organizations to discuss fire safety in the community. The community-based fire safety concept was born out of the statewide Fire Safe Council whose goal is to preserve California's natural and manmade resources by mobilizing all Californians to make their homes, neighborhoods and communities fire safe. There are approximately 36 local councils throughout the county of San Diego and more than 85 statewide.
The Fire Safe Council can be used as a forum to share information, solve problems and link related programs in ways that can save money and time. The public safety issues discussed may even extend beyond fire safety, to earthquake preparedness, emergency medical response. For more information, call (760) 630-7070.
The council has approved its Mission Statement to be, "To mobilize the community to preserve, educate and protect lives, property and the environment from multi-hazard incidents."
Volunteers sought for adult literacy program
SAN DIEGO COUNTY ---- Organizers of the San Diego County Library system's new adult literacy program, Libraries Empower All to Read Now or L.E.A.R.N., are seeking volunteer tutors.
Tutors receive training and continual support from County Library literacy program staff. L.E.A.R.N. matches English-speaking adult learners with trained volunteer tutors, creating a team that works together for a minimum of six months. Most teams meet for 90 minutes twice weekly at a county library branch. The Fallbrook Library is at 124 S. Mission Road.
The headquarters for the L.E.A.R.N Literacy Center, which is located in the El Cajon Branch Library, serves all 32 branches. With six computers and several tables for tutoring sessions, the center offers a growing collection of materials to help maximize the potential of each tutor-learner team, from basic skills and General Educational Development (GED) workbooks to leisure reading and life-skills texts.
The program is entirely learner-centered, meaning that curriculum is based on each learner's individual goals, which can vary widely, from helping children with schoolwork, to getting a promotion at work, to simply reading the newspaper.
Tutor training sessions are scheduled as follows:
- 9 a.m, to 4 p.m., April 29, 9:00 a.m., Vista Branch Library, 700 Eucalyptus Ave., Vista.
- 5 to 8 p.m. May 2 and 3, two parts in two evenings, El Cajon Branch Library, 201 E. Douglas Ave., El Cajon.

Quilting class for adults offered

Blood drive planned for April 26

Dogs can learn how to avoid rattlesnakes
RAMONA ---- Burkhardt's Good Dog Training School will offer rattlesnake avoidance clinics for dogs May 7 and June 4 in Poway.
Rattlesnake bites are a serious risk to dogs. Many do not survive, especially when bitten in the face. At the clinics, dogs will learn how to avoid rattlesnakes. Owners whose dogs have already participated in a rattlesnake clinic are encouraged to bring their dogs for a recheck or refresher clinic annually.

Lifeguard training course offered
SAN MARCOS ---- The city will offer a lifeguard training course for ages 15 and older from May 4 through 23 at the Woodland Park Pool. Classes will meet from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m Saturdays and Sundays.
All participants who successfully complete the course will be eligible to apply for a summer lifeguarding position at one of the two city pools. Participants must first pass a swim test before beginning the course.

Discover San Marcos hike set
SAN MARCOS ---- The city's Community Services Department will sponsor a free Discover San Marcos hike from 9 a.m. to noon May 6.
Participants will meet at Las Posas Park, corner of Borden and Las Posas roads. The easy, 3-mile hike will loop through the Palomar College Arboretum and back to the park. A more difficult side trip to the top of "P" Mountain will be offered.
Reservations are not required; sign in at the meeting location. Minors must be with an adult. Participants should bring water and trail snacks and wear sturdy walking shoes.

Playgoers to host senior performers

While checking on homes, patrol members on occasion have discovered broken water lines, malfunctioning pool equipment and bees swarming into houses. Japanese Flower Festival set
VISTA ---- Japanese food, cultural arts and music will be featured when the North County Buddhist community hosts the "Hanamatsuri" (Flower Festival) Bazaar from noon to 6 p.m. April 29 and 30 at 150 Cedar Road, home of the Vista Buddhist Temple and the Japanese-American Cultural Center. Admission and parking are free.
Food offerings prepared by members of the two organizations will include chicken, beef and tuna teriyaki, tempura, sushi and various noodle dishes. Entertainment will include Japanese traditional dancing, martial arts, taiko drumming, demonstration of traditional Oriental medicine, Buddhist lectures and games for kids.
The flower festival combines a celebration of spring and a commemoration of the birth of the Buddha. According to Buddhist tradition, the historic Buddha, an Indian prince named Siddhartha Gautama, was born about 545 BC near the present-day border of India and Nepal. Naval hospital seeks volunteers
CAMP PENDLETON ---- Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton is looking for volunteer drivers interested in supporting a new Patient Parking Shuttle Service with six-passenger electric carts.
Drivers must have a valid state driver's license, good vision and hearing and be at least 21 years of age. The hospital will provide safety training. Approved drivers will generally be scheduled in two- to five-hour shifts to cover the Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. service. Contact Cmdr. Maria Balolong at (760) 725-1436.
Emergency blood shortage declared
The San Diego Blood Bank has declared an emergency blood shortage due to high demand and low donor response during spring break. Blood supplies have been critically low for months, but now most blood types are at or below the one-day level.
"We are now at a point where patients across the county are at risk," said Lynn Stedd of the blood bank. "There is no safety net."
Blood donors of all types are urged to donate blood immediately. To find the nearest bloodmobile or San Diego Blood Bank center, visit http://www.sandiegobloodbank.org or call (800) 4MY-SDBB.
Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in generally good health and weighs at least 110 pounds may qualify to donate blood. A good meal is recommended prior to donation.
