Garden Club holds flower show
The Californian
TEMECULA ---- Carmela May, Susan Puma and Maria Oponick were the Award of Merit winners when the Temecula Valley Garden Club held its 21st annual Flower Show April 22 at the Mary Phillips Senior Center.
The trio won for horticulture: May for roses, Puma for iris, cut perennials and fruits and vegetables, and Oponick for her entry of orchids.
Donna Allec won the Arboreal Award as well as a Sweepstakes Award in horticulture for most blue ribbons in all categories. An Award of Horticultural Excellence for the top exhibit in the horticultural division was won by Puma.
In the Design Section, Merrilee Batchelor won the Petite Award for a very small arrangement in the Miniature Section. Puma won the Designer's Choice Award. The Tricolor Award, requiring the use of only fresh material, was won by Caroline Batchelder. The Sweepstakes Award in design for most blue ribbons won went to Sandi Lord. A Special Award was given to Batchelder for best overall design.
National Garden Club standards were employed, which meant all entries were judged on standards using a point system rather than being judged in competition against each other. Every piece of horticulture or design starts with 100 points and demerits are taken away for various nonconforming attributes. The standards include grooming of the plant, cultural perfection and distinction. In the design category, artistic interpretation must be followed based on a theme and a similar system of point demerit is used.
