North County Community News briefs: Burrito challenge winner announced

FALLBROOK ---- Jesus Perez was the overall winner in the recent burrito challenge sponsored by La Caseta restaurant in connection with the recent avocado festival. He consumed a 4-pound Big Del Burrito in 4 minutes, 46 seconds.
Twenty-two diners attempted the challenge, but only 12 managed to win by eating it in less than the one hour allowed. The 2005 winner, Oscar Hoskins, who devoured the burrito last year in 4 minutes, 36 seconds, watched Perez.
Perez and the other winners will have their names listed on La Caseta's permanent wall plaque and the "Big Del Burrito" fame bulletin board. Perez also won dinner for two at La Caseta.
Drum circle group to perform

Fallbrook artist to appear at Brett Stokes gallery
FALLBROOK ---- Fallbrook artist Susan Emily Brown will host an inaugural viewing of her two- and three-dimensional artwork, which spans the last 10 years of her career. A viewing will be hosted by family friend and local artist Brett Stokes from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Brett Stokes Studio/Gallery at 732 W. Elder St.
Brown was a student of Fallbrook resident Carilyn Vice during her childhood and was inspired initially by her instructor at Earl Warren Junior High School. She also studied with instructor and artist David Newcomb at San Dieguito Academy. Brown then attended Palomar College and Vermont College of the Union Institute and University, earning degrees in child development, general studies, American Indian studies and liberal arts.
Blood drive set for May 11
FALLBROOK ---- The San Diego Blood Bank will conduct a blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m. May 11 hosted by Carl's Jr., 1137 S. Mission Road. The bloodmobile will be parked in the Albertson's parking lot.
Donors will receive a free Famous Star hamburger courtesy of Carl's Jr. and a specially designed San Diego Blood Bank T-shirt. Donors also will receive a medical history review and mini-physical, which includes blood pressure, pulse and temperature checks.
Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood. A good meal is recommended prior to donation.

Anne Frank exhibit to be at library
FALLBROOK ---- A traveling exhibit that focuses on Anne Frank's diary and includes posters and a DVD presentation of her secret hiding place during the Holocaust will be hosted by the Fallbrook Library from May 8 through 13 at the Fallbrook Library.
Participants get a small glimpse of what it was like for those hiding from the Nazis and Nazi collaborators, as they passed their days and nights in constant threat of discovery and murder.
The story of Anne Frank, a young Holocaust victim who died at the age of 15 in the Bergen Belsen concentration camp, has become well known because her diary survived. Her diary includes examples of human persistence in the face of terrible unfolding events.

Lavender aromatherapy classes on tap
VALLEY CENTER ---- The Lavender Fields is adding two new classes to its 2006 summer schedule. On May 13, registered aroma therapist Deborah Halvorson will demonstrate how to make organic lavender lotion, sunburn ointment and hair spray. On June 10, she will teach participants how to create natural lavender home care products, such as laundry detergent, carpet powder and ant repellent.

Soroptimists to honor Mary's House director
SAN DIEGO ---- Cynthia Kangas, program director of Mary's House, will receive the 2006 Making a Difference for Women Award from Soroptimist International of San Diego. Mary's House, a YMCA Youth & Family Services project, is a transitional living program in Escondido for young women who are turning 18 and "aging out" of San Diego's foster care system. Because of her knowledge of what these young women experience, Kangas developed guidelines for individuals who are interested in serving as mentors, as well as guidelines for how these young women should receive mentoring.
The award will be presented May 13 at the "Passport to Paradise" fundraising event at the Town & Country Convention Center, Atlas Ballroom. DAR chapter to meet May 13
ESCONDIDO ---- The Rincon del Diablo Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will hold a luncheon meeting May 13 at a restaurant in Escondido. Chapter Regent Jacquelyn Peterson of Poway will talk about the Washington-Rochambeau Commemoration. The DAR is holding commemorative events nationwide to mark the 225th anniversary of the Revolutionary War.
Founded in 1890, the DAR is a volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America's future through better education for children. Any woman age 18 or older who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for DAR membership.

Auction to benefit Boys & Girls Clubs
RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego's 24th annual Bid for Kids Extravaganza Auction, themed "Hot Havana Nights," will be held May 13 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, 17550 Bernardo Oaks Drive.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. with a silent auction and cocktails followed by dinner and a live auction at 7:30. News 8's Carlo Cecchetto will serve as host for evening, and musical entertainment will be provided by the guitar threesome Kimera.
Tickets are $150 per person; tables for 10 also are available. Proceeds will benefit programs and services for the more than 12,000 children served by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego. For information, call (760) 746-3315, Ext. 211.

MiraCosta offers childbirth classes
MiraCosta College offers free childbirth preparation classes throughout the year at various convenient locations in North County. All classes are taught by experienced childbirth educators. Mayor Wood on Voice of Oceanside
OCEANSIDE ---- Mayor Jim Wood will appear on the Voice of Oceanside television show in May. The public is invited to attend the taping May 11. Members of the studio audience will have an opportunity to ask Wood a question during part of the show. Arrival time for audience members is 6:30 p.m. The show is taped from 7 to 8 p.m.
This edition of Voice of Oceanside is the first in a series of summertime programs featuring Oceanside's mayor and council. MiraCosta student receives scholarship
OCEANSIDE ---- MiraCosta student and tutor Sam Fernandez was recently selected by Genentech to receive a $7,500 scholarship and a summer internship as part of the Genentech Scholars Program. Fernandez is studying biology at MiraCosta and also taking classes at Cal State San Marcos. He plans on earning his bachelor's degree and then pursuing his masters and doctorate.
Grief support group offered

Vista chamber holds candidate forum
VISTA ---- The Vista Chamber of Commerce will hold a forum for the 74th District Assembly candidates from 7 to 8:30 p.m. May 8 at the Avo Playhouse, 303 Main St. The public is welcome.
Each candidate will make opening and closing statements and will answer questions from the chamber and the audience. Chamber CEO Jim Baumann will moderate the forum. Candidates have been asked to bring campaign literature for an information table.
All three Republican candidates have confirmed their attendance. They are: Martin Garrick, a small-business owner from Solana Beach; Scott Packard, a Carlsbad businessman; and Marie Waldron, an Escondido city councilwoman.
