LOS ANGELES - Candidates for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination were campaigning hard across Southland Saturday, shaking hands, cleaning beaches and courting minority voters ahead of Tuesday's primary election.

Controller Steve Westly began the third and final leg of a two-week statewide bus tour with a stop in Huntington Beach, where he helped clean-up a beach with his wife. The former eBay executive then stopped in San Pedro, where he spoke with environmental leaders.

"I'm fired up," Westly told City News Service. "We're having fun. I love seeing all the smiles on people's faces."

State Treasurer Phil Angelides, Westly's main rival, was scheduled to campaign on Olvera Street with Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, D-Los Angeles, and Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles. Angelides and Nunez planned to greet voters at La Golondrina Mexican Cafe this morning.

Angelides, who was scheduled to campaign in San Jose this afternoon, could not be reached to comment.

Recent polls have said the candidates are neck and neck in their bid to become governor.

Westly said he was heading to San Gabriel to appear at two events with Assemblywoman Judy Chu, D-Monterey Park, who is running for a seat on the Board of Equalization. Westly will meet with black ministers and conduct a "town hall forum" at Los Angeles Trade Technical College.
