LOS ANGELES -- Nearly 1,000 people raised more than $170,000 Saturday in the 5th Annual Arthritis Walk at the Rose Bowl, organizers said.
The 5K walk aimed to raise money and awareness for the Arthritis Foundation, Southern California Chapter, said Dr. Robin Dore, chair of the chapter.
"The dollars raised at this walk will help us fund programs and research to help find a cure for arthritis," Dore said.
Perdita Molina, 12, served as the walk's official honoree. Molina, from Covina, was diagnosed with scleroderma at age 6.
"I am happy to walk on behalf of the 300,000 children and teens in the U.S. that are living with arthritis," Molina said. "I feel that I made a difference by walking for those who can't."
Arthritis affects 66 million Americans, including one in three adults, organizers said. About 1.3 million Los Angeles County residents and does not have to be an inevitable part of aging, they said. Arthritis can be managed with treatment so people can enjoy basic, daily activities, they said.
