Community HousingWorks awards scholarships

ESCONDIDO ---- Community HousingWorks honored five outstanding local young people for their contributions to the community at its Fourth Annual VALOR Scholarship Award Reception on May 18 at the Escondido Children's Museum at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.
Community HousingWorks is a San Diego nonprofit organization that provides a full range of housing options combined with training and support to help people and neighborhoods move up in the world. Community HousingWorks builds and owns beautiful affordable apartments, provides unique first-time homebuyer loans, and provides support and training that strengthens communities and helps youth and adults build a wealthier future.
Community HousingWorks President and CEO Sue Reynolds, Community HousingWorks Board of Directors Chair June Collins, and Escondido Mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler and her mother Vi Pfeiler were among the dozens of people who came out to honor the three VALOR Scholarship winners and the Youth and Adult Volunteers of the year.
VALOR scholarships were presented to Ahmed Ahmed, Adrienne Davis and Monica Lopez. Each year, VALOR (Volunteer Achievement and Leadership Opportunity for Reward) scholarships are awarded to residents of affordable housing developed by Community HousingWorks who mentor elementary school children in the Learning Communities after-school program.
Yolanda Granados and Greg Romero also were honored as 2006 Youth and Adult Volunteer of the Year, respectively. Granados, a resident of Orange Place Townhomes in Escondido, helped organize a youth dance performance at the Say Yes to a Safe Neighborhood event last September. Romero, a Southwestern College student, lives in the neighborhood near Las Serenas apartments in National City and volunteers at its Learning Community program.
