Kenneth McCubbins, 88


CARLSBAD - Kenneth B.C. McCubbins, 88, died Thursday, June 8, 2006, at his home.

Mr. McCubbins served in the U.S. Navy as a carrier pilot aboard the USS Suwanee and the USS Hornet, retiring as a lieutenant commander. He worked in investment banking and real estate. He was a church elder, a Shriner and a Mason. He was awarded the Hiram Award for devoted service in 1989. He was a member of the Al Malaikah Temple Cresent Patrol.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. today, June 16, at the Pavilion at Sea Cliff (take Poinsettia exit east off I-5 and turn right on Paseo Del Norte).

Vanessa Kitchen, 28


MESA GRANDE RESERVATION -- Vanessa "Ness" Kitchen, 28, died Friday, June 9, 2006, in Riverside.

Born June 4, 1978, in Cuba, N.M., she lived in Mesa Grande Reservation all her life. She played a major role in the creation of the soft count department at Casino Pauma. She worked for several casinos. She was a descendant of the Navajo Nation and the Diegueno/ Luiseno tribes.

Ms. Kitchen is survived by her mother, Batty Platero of Mesa Grande; father Gabriel Kitchen of Mesa Grande; brother Gabriel Kitchen Jr. of Mesa Grande; and sisters Natasha Kitchen and Tasheena Kitchen, both of Mesa Grande, and Duran Kitchen and Dione Kitchen, both of Soboba.

A wake will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, June 16, at Mesa Grande Reservation. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at Mesa Grande Reservation.

Margery Bravender, 85


OCEANSIDE -- Margery Holloway Bravender, 85, died Saturday, June 10, 2006, in Vista.

Born May 21, 1921, in Chicago, she lived in Oceanside for 21 years. She was a self-employed artist and art teacher. She was a member of the Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Bravender is survived by her husband of six years, Donn Bravender of Oceanside; sons and daughters-in-law Ron and Betsy Snipe of Port Angeles, Wash., and Jim and Darla Snipe of Japan; daughters and son-in-law Deborah and Mike Burke of Long Beach, and Catherine Olcott of Phoenix; sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Gordon of Cupertino; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 845 Chestnut in Escondido with the Rev. Meg Decker officiating. Inurnment will be in the Church Columbarium.

Daniel Palen, 72


SAN MARCOS - Daniel James Palen, 72, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born March 26, 1934, in Winona, Minn., he lived in San Diego County for 20 years. He was a rental manager for the La Mesa Woman's Club for 17 years. He was a grand knight of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1491. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and chairman of the picnic committee. He sang in the St. Francis Church choir in Brainerd, Minn.

Mr. Palen is survived by his wife of 30 years, Mary Ellen Palen of San Marcos; sons and daughters-in-law Peter and Monica Palen of Chula Vista, Dan and Eva Palen of San Diego, Patrick and Randi Palen of Chula Vista and Mike Morin of San Marcos; daughters and sons-in-law Christine and Mike Stemper, Penelope and Shannon Cash, and Sara and Mike Rowe, all of Duluth, Minn., and Amy and Roy Darker of Superior, Wis.; sister Marylou Ewens of Milwaukee; 22 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, June 19, at St. Mark's Catholic Church in San Marcos. Private inurnment at Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd is planned.

Clifford Klingensmith, 81


SAN MARCOS -- Clifford Arthur Klingensmith, 81, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at his home.

Born Aug. 14, 1924, in Lovilla, Iowa, he lived in San Marcos for 53 years. He retired after 30 years from Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, where he had been a cook and in maintenance. He was a member of the Meadowlark Community Church, where he was an usher. He was a past board member of the Valley Bible Church. He was a volunteer fireman for the San Marcos Fire Department.

Mr. Klingensmith is survived by his wife of 23 years, Mildred L. Klingensmith of San Marcos; sons Kenneth Klingensmith of Gretner, Neb., and Ronald Klingensmith of Escondido; stepson Richard Clark of San Marcos; daughter Linda Swaim of San Marcos; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, June 19, at Meadowlark Community Church, 1918 Redwing St. in San Marcos with the Revs. David Shaw and Jake Duran officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at San Marcos Cemetery.

Georgia Eubank, 78


ESCONDIDO - Georgia Katherine Eubank, 78, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006.

Born Oct. 11, 1927, in Okemah, Okla., she lived in Escondido for more than 50 years. She was one of the founding members of the Oak Hill Church of Christ. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and decorating.

Mrs. Eubank was preceded in death by her parents, Owen and Ethel Dunham. She is survived by her husband, Marion Eubank; her children and their spouses Connie and Gary Huntington of Lubbock, Texas, Danny and Susan Eubank of San Marcos, Ginger and Randy Bearden of Murrieta, and Merry and Richard McDuff of Escondido; brothers Clois, Bobby, Arliss, Tom and Rusty; sisters Vanara, Peggy, Wanda and Janet; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services have been held with interment at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

ESCONDIDO -- Barbara Wane Tattitch, 69, died Sunday, June 4, 2006.

Born Dec. 2, 1936, in Gorham, Kan., she lived in Escondido for 19 years. She retired in 2003 as an executive secretary for the Boys & Girls Club. She was a member of the Ladies Club of Escondido County Club. She enjoyed playing golf.

Mrs. Tattitch is survived by her husband of 38 years, Al Tattitch of Escondido; and sister Judy Teeter of St. Peters, Mo.

Private family services are planned with inurnment in St. Charles, Mo.

VISTA -- Robert "Scottie Turnbull, 75, died Saturday, June 3, 2006, at his home.

He was born Oct. 13, 1930, in Scotland. He served in the Scottish Highland Army. He was an electrician and enjoyed playing golf and yacht racing.

A casual celebration of life will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 18, at Shadowridge Country Club, 1980 Gateway Drive in Vista.

ESCONDIDO -- Valentine "Val" Disparti, 76, died of pancreatic cancer, Sunday, June 4, 2006.

Born Feb. 14, 1930, in Henrietta, near Rochester, N.Y., she lived in Escondido for more than 40 years. She enjoyed playing bridge, going to the casinos, camping, traveling and cruising. She was a prolific quilter.

Mrs. Disparti is survived by her husband of 54 years, Nicholas Disparti of Escondido; sons and daughter-in-law Jerry and Donna Disparti and Steven Disparti; daughter and son-in-law Julie and Dan Fregeau; brother and sister-in-law Frank and Francis Romeo; sister Angie Damico; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A Mass was celebrated Wednesday, June 14, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Escondido. Interment was at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

SAN MARCOS - Margaret Pearl Schultz, 85, died Saturday, May 27, 2006.

Born Aug. 4, 1920, in Salford, Pa., she lived in San Marcos for 45 years. She served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. She worked at Valley Forge General Hospital. She enjoyed cooking, embroidery, crocheting, gardening and doing crafts.

Mrs. Schultz was preceded in death by her brother Arnold. She is survived by her husband, Arthur Schultz; daughter Sherri of San Francisco; sisters Gladys of Pennsburg, Pa., and Pauline of San Francisco.

Telophase Cremation Society handled the arrangements. Her cremains will be scattered in her garden.

William Stralo Sr., 71


POWAY - William E. Stralo Sr., 71, died of natural causes, Tuesday, June 13, 2006.

Born March 24, 1935, in Lewiston, Pa., he lived in Poway for 45 years. He was attached to the Naval Special Warfare Team and did several tours in Vietnam as well as serving in Korea. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Stralo is survived by his wife, Mabel Stralo of Poway; sons and daughters-in-law William Jr. and Jolanda Stralo of San Diego and Glen and Machelle Stralo of Fallon, Nev.; daughters and son-in-law Melody Foulk of Valley Center, Myona Olney of San Diego, and Juli M. and David Bauer of Valley Center; stepbrother Joseph Soccio of Delaware; sister Carolee Lane of Tacoma, Wash.; stepsister Jo Ann Soccio of Carson; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, at Poway Bernardo Mortuary with the Rev. Robert Rooks officiating. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Shirley officiating.

Oge Aulava, 75


VISTA - Oge Mata Aulava, 75, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at his home.

Born June 9, 1930, in Lauli'i, American Samoa, he lived in Vista for 17 years. He retired in 1996 from Olympic Fastening Systems. He was a member of the Vista Samoan Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Mr. Aulava was preceded in death by his first wife, Situana'i Kose Aulava, in 1990. He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Pusaloa A. Aulava of Vista; parents Mamalu Moliga Aulava and Mata Aulava; son and daughter-in-law Oge Jr. and Shannon Aulava; daughter and son-in-law Usoalii and John Afa'ese; sisters Pelelini Vaa Sauni, Lita Okesene Alo, both of American Samoa, and Memoi Alapati Ameperosa of Garden Grove; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 18, at Eternal Hills Mortuary with the Rev. Aleni Fepulea'i officiating. Interment will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 19, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park with the Rev. Fepulea'i officiating.

Arlene H. Geer


Arlene H. Geer, 84, passed away from a heart attack, Monday, June 12, 2006, at Tri-City Medical Center.

She was born July 15, 1921, in Calumet City, Ill., and lived in Oceanside for 20 years. Right out of nurses training in 1943, Arlene served as a second lieutenant nurse in the U.S. Army during World War II. She was awarded the Bronze Battle Star for service during the Battle of the Bulge.

Arlene spent 45 years in nursing -- 15 years as an operating room staff nurse and supervisor, and 25 years as an occupational health nurse. She as well served in leadership roles in state and regional occupation health associations.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Arlene also gave generously of her time as a volunteer at Tri-City Hospital and as a greeter at her church, Lighthouse Christian Church. Arlene had a great passion for nursing and her family and friends. She cared about everyone she met and was a true care giver.

Arlene is survived by her husband of 36 years, Q.N. "Casey" Geer of Oceanside; sons and daughters-in-law Harold and Renee Biebel of Bowling Green, Ky., Robert and Kay Biebel of Decatur, Ga., and Martin and Noelle Biebel of Nevada City; daughter Mary Biebel of Greenville, S.C.; sister and brother-in-law Lois and Arnold Panish of Pacifica; and grandchildren Joya, Peter, Michael, Joan and Tiffany.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at Lighthouse Christian Church, 4700 Mesa Drive in Oceanside with the Rev. Richard Miller officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Ernest August Lippman, 87


Ernest August Lippman, 87, died Wednesday, May 31, 2006.

Born August 16, 1918, in San Francisco, he lived in Escondido for 39 years. He was a supervisor for Pacific Telephone for 40 years. He served in the Navy from 1941 to 1945 on the USS San Francisco, and was the last Pearl Harbor survivor in Escondido. He was a ham radio operator, model train collector and world traveler. He was a member of the Al Bahr Shrine and the Church of Escondido Creative Center of Spiritual Living.

Mr. Lippman was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Jeanne Lippman, in 2005.

Ernie will always be remembered for his great sense of humor; he was always ready with a joke.

Interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 19, at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
