OCEANSIDE ---- Should there be an amnesty program, what is the size of the illegal immigrant population, and what are its effects on the country? Those were some of the questions debated Thursday night at a dinner sponsored by the Republican Club of North County.

To debate the topic, the club invited Raoul Lowery-Contreras, a newspaper columnist, and Jim Gilchrist, founder of the Minuteman Project, a group of anti-illegal immigrant activists. Gilchrist was unable to attend, but the group's executive director, Stephen Eichler, took his place.

Eichler said the millions of illegal immigrants in the country have stressed its resources by overcrowding roads, hospital emergency rooms and schools. Many in the audience applauded Eichler numerous times throughout the 90-minute debate.

On the other hand, Contreras said illegal immigrants pay about $7 billion each year into the nation's Social Security system, help produce cheaper crops and services, and should be allowed to work legally in the country if they return home and are sponsored by an employer.

"The very fact that the chicken that you ate here tonight was probably processed by an illegal alien is an important and positive impact," Contreras said. "We have positives and negatives. There is a drain on some public expenditures, but not what you think."

Eichler said the negative effects of illegal immigration far outweigh any potential positives.

"The price that everyone is really paying is the price that we pay when we get on our freeways and can't move but an inch every few minutes," he said. "I was glad to enjoy the day without illegal immigrants."

Illegal immigration has been a hotly debated issue in North County for years, but interest has heightened during recent political campaigns that have taken up the cause of more restrictive immigration enforcement efforts.

Recently Marie Waldron, an Escondido councilwoman running for the 74th State Assembly seat, received the endorsement of the San Diego Minutemen, an offshoot group of the Minutemen Project. She failed in her bid for the GOP nomination to the race. Her opponent, Republican Martin Garrick, who won the nomination, is also staunchly anti-illegal immigrant.

At Tuesday's debate, Eichler said the problems associated with illegal immigration are not restricted to any particular group, but include all who are in the country illegally. However, he criticized the predominantly Latino-led recent marches, saying that participants "thumbed their nose at the red, white and blue."

Eichler also decried the problem of "anchor babies," a pejorative term used to describe children born to illegal immigrant parents. He said those babies give their parents a "free pass" to collect benefits in the country.

Contreras said the term was offensive and that citizenship was a constitutional right awarded to all persons born in the country without qualifications.

"The term 'anchor baby' is a despicable term created by people who have no clue," Contreras said. "The 14th Amendment says, 'all persons born or naturalized in the United States of America.' That's not an interpretation .... That's not a misinterpretation. That's the 14th Amendment."

contreras makes a valid point wrote on Jun 23, 2006 12:03 AM:I agree with Contreras the term ‘anchor baby’ is a despicable term and certainly not aliened with the 14th Amendment. However this does little to address the problem of hundreds of women as reported in a ’60 minute segment’ crossing the border right before delivery and having their babies here. Once the babies are born they claim that they are single mothers and began the process of collecting WIC, food stamps and welfare. In the meantime they are married living in Tijuana and come here once a month with a passport to pick up their checks at their P.O. Boxes in San Isidro. Also as reported in the media hundreds of Mexican students cross the border to attend school on this side of the border. This is the problem these people are certainly not contributing a single penny into our system; instead they take, take and take some more. It is no wonder that we will never retire and our taxes keep going up.

Illegal immigration jeprodizes our heritage, our government, our resources, our economics, our safety, our security, our very way of life. America was founded as a republic. We are now more socialist in practice. May God have mercy on America!

If China were to stop buying U.S. Treasury bonds - or suddenly dump its holdings - most Americans would feel it fast. U.S. interest rates would buck upward. Millions of homeowners with variable-rate mortgages or large debt would screech in discomfort." Etc. Source: Mercury News - May 31, 2006.

Tired of Illegals wrote on Jun 23, 2006 8:44 AM:Gordon - why don't you take in some anchor babies and financially support them until they get out of college? While your at it, make sure they stay out of gangs, don't get pregnant, or learn about spray paint.

Ray wrote on Jun 23, 2006 9:09 AM:Sifuentes is back. Guess the job in Florida didn't work out. Just when the NCT was starting to tell the truth about illegal immigration, they bring back the neighborhood reconquista. By the way Mr. Contraras how can someone pay social security when here illegally? they use mine. Know how they do it? the employer get's a small checking account, goes on the internet and get's checks printed, fills out all the good stuff that makes it look legal, the employer keeps the money because he knows illegals will never file. Biggest scam going. The truth will set you free folks and illegals are a plague on the future of this country, truth.

Peter wrote on Jun 23, 2006 10:03 AM:Mr Contreras is way off base... Where does he get the 7 billion dollar SS figure? Most illegals are paid in cash and the employer doesn't pay the payroll taxes.. Illegals using forged papers to work are breaking the law and should NEVER be intitled to receive any government benefits, even SS. As for American legal workers, they receive no benefit from illegal immigration. The illegal worker in this country is what makes it possible for business to continue to pay sub-standard wages to workers while CEOs make $54,000 per hour in wages and benefits. As for the 14th Admendment, it doesn't say the parents of the child born in the USA shall be given citizenship... the parent being here illegally is breaking the law and Mr Contreras position is that they should be rewarded.. I say no way, never never should any individual be "rewarded" for breaking our laws.

A new one wrote on Jun 23, 2006 10:54 AM:I've heard everything bad blamed on "illegals" off and on for decades, but Peter takes the cake, blaming them for CEO's making $54k/hr. That's where this scapegoating takes you - LaLa Land with the Minutemen (and Vista City Council). What about termites? Maybe those day laborers are responsible for them, too. After all, I hear they have termites in Mexico. It must be part of the big plot to take over "America" and make everyone speak Spanish.

Daren wrote on Jun 23, 2006 11:10 AM:Illegals don't have Social Security numbers. They are given fake or stolen numbers by the employers or other "agencies" that help criminal illegals.

Ron wrote on Jun 23, 2006 12:00 PM:Don't you just love all these bleeding hearts? Sure, come on in, the entitlements are great! Especially since we'll get the "rich" to pay for them. And if Mr. Contreras best argument is "they pay 7 billion in social security taxes", then I have a question. If it's such a benefit to have them here, why does the State of California alone spend 5 billion on illegals? Between all the social services, education, jails, courts, etc. What's the plus? 7 billion nation wide, as opposed to a single state paying out 5 billion? Someone needs to tech this guy some math, quickly. And as far as being offended, I think marching in mass with Mexican flags on american soil is offensive. Either you want this country as your own, or go home. Shaking my head. They leave Mexico because it does not provide them with all the benefits that America does, like healthcare, jobs, education. Yet, they wave these flags of a failed country? How can you have pride in a country that gave you nothing? And the country that did, you call evil.

Dan (temecula) wrote on Jun 23, 2006 12:33 PM: Truth be told your illegal get out. We don't need illegals to help support are country, our way of life, or please like this is true are social security. Illegals are desparate people who when they come here have very little or nothing. And if they don't have any illegal family help they remain desparate. The truth is and I don't know why I haven't heard any more on the 2,100 illegal immigrants (mostly Latino) aressted for crimes of child molestation, gang violence, and even murder. If you heard about this story that I believed happened a week ago comment on that. All I know is I'm no free loader I paid just over 15,000 in taxes last year and I wonder just how much went to illegals. Who's helping who. You mean my strawberries won't cost as much. That makes is worth it. Just get out we will survive and become stronger without you. Not racist just legally pissed off.

Now we are giving free lunches to kids up to 18 years old. What other countries are dumb enough . They work mainly for cash Pay no soc sec. or taxes send money home and eat on us. No wonder they can work cheaper. Personally I can't see where they are working so cheap.

Peter wrote on Jun 23, 2006 2:13 PM:May I suggest you all sign on too: www.spp.gov and read about the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America agreed to and signed by BUSH. After reading the material on this "government" website, then tell me our government in partnership with business leaders hasn't sold out America. Once this agreement is implemented, the borders between Canada and Mexico will be removed and peoples from all three countries will be allowed to move freely about and conduct business without restrictions. This also means 30 million mexicans will be allowed to freely travel to the United States with any restrictions... If you're currently working for wages, your job and way of life will be history. Illegal immigration will have been solved. For those of you that don't believe this is business driven with complete disregard for the American worker, I have a bridge for sale real cheap, and it can be moved to your location.

Peter wrote on Jun 23, 2006 2:32 PM:A new one - I'm not blaming illegals, I'm pointing out what affect illegal uncontrolled immigration has on the American work force.. I'm not sure what your point of view is on the subject but as a business man if I'm allow to hire workers at sub-standard wages, pay no benefits, I as a business owner benefit greatly... nevertheless once the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America is implemented all Americans will have experienced first hand what I'm writing about today. Some will greatly benefit, but the greater majority will not.

American-Irish Resident wrote on Jun 23, 2006 3:38 PM:Does Contreras have a clue that the Mex-Mafia brutally slaughtered and beheaded a few folks in Rosarito Beach last Tuesday? Does Contreras ever comment that a percentage of these illegal immigrants are mules bringing drugs to San Diego County for the animal-humans in the Mex-Mafia? Does Contreras admit that people who are financially poor run to the crime arena where the US citizens' lives, houses, and vehicles are at risk? When did Contreras discuss the passively violent tactic of stealing the identities of good, hard working citizens of the USA? I do not recall the people of the USA requesting the establishment of anchor families that may bring illegal acts to the USA with their illegal family members. Let Contreras take it up with 50th District Rep Bilbray.

So Cal Native wrote on Jun 23, 2006 3:42 PM:Eichler stated that the freeways are overcrowded and we can only move an inch at a time because of illegals. Well dummy, the reason the freeways are overcrowded are because transplants from other states have moved here with there anchor babies and have clogged up this state. It is so hard now adays to find a true California native. Everyone is a transplant!

Remember. There is no way to spin this truth: the illegal alien INVASION FROM MEXICO is the largest migration of humans in the history of the world and will be our nations worst nightmare...bar none, hands down. This crisis negatively impacts EVERY segment of our society from the macro to the micro level. Let's not forget that Raul, aka Mr. Mexico City, was the single most reviled columnist for the NCT's...he received more negative 'letters' to the editor than any columnist in that papers history. That says it all.

Obviously, the US govt. knows illegal aliens benefit the US economy but they can't say it to the public. I look at it this way, if it was Ireland or the Philipines next to the US, would hispanics be so pashionate about the illegal alien cause?
