ESCONDIDO -- Escondido police arrested 10 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence or other violations during a five-hour sobriety checkpoint Saturday night, authorities said Sunday.
The checkpoint was held near the Escondido police station on the 700 block of Grand Avenue and ended around midnight.
According to a report, five people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, one was arrested on suspicion of drug possession and four others were arrested on suspicion of various other violations, said Escondido police Lt. Tom Albergo.
Officers also issued 96 tickets and impounded 86 vehicles impounded because of arrests, unlicensed or suspended license drivers, authorities said.
Oceanside and Carlsbad police also joined in the effort, and Albergo said it is common for local agencies to come together to conduct checkpoint exercises because so many resources are needed.
"We team up, we need a lot of personnel and resources," Albergo said.
Saturday's exercise was one of several recent sobriety checkpoints held in North County, including one in Vista on June 24 and another in Fallbrook on June 30.

Skip wrote on Jul 3, 2006 6:13 AM:Well there are probably a few less uninsured, unlicensed, and illegal alien drivers on the road today. Thank You Escondido Police Dept.

Get the message out to all the unisured, unregistred, unlicensed, gang-bangers, drunks and felons that this town is serious about cleaning-up it's image and making it a safer place for law-abiding citizens. Good job Esco Police.
Tired of Illegals wrote on Jul 3, 2006 8:45 AM:Hey NCT - why don't you publish the actual statistics of how many of the impounded vehicles were those driven by illegals? Oh, but that would be considered racist!!! EPD - Keep up the good work!
Susan wrote on Jul 3, 2006 9:12 AM:Great work! The more of those the merrier! I'd like to see a full list of the people who were arrested and ticketed included in your article. That may be an incentive to think twice about drinking and being just plain stupid!!
Pete Nice wrote on Jul 3, 2006 9:21 AM:NC Times should publish a list of those who were arrested or had their rides impounded, that way all the folks who post negative comments about illegals can get a nice wake up call & see that some of those arrested are actually normal people with families & good jobs. My supervisor got caught in one of those sweeps a few years ago & she was an IT manager making 70k a year. Quit blaming illegals for everything that goes wrong.
Response to Pete Nice wrote on Jul 3, 2006 12:15 PM:Pete - Thank you for your observation that some of the people caught in these sweeps are actually "normal" people with families and good jobs, i.e. your supervisor. However, your supervisor MUST HAVE BEEN EITHER UNDER THE INFLUENCE (main purpose of the sweeps) OR IN VIOLATION OF THE LAW IN SOME OTHER WAY or she would not have been "caught." Your defense of the "illegals" and of your supervisor, who was, in some capacity, "illegal" reminds me of the saying "thou protesteth too much." Keep your own side of the street clean (stay LEGAL). As for blaming everything on the illegals, just look at the statistics - facts don't lie.
Sooner or Later We All Get Caught wrote on Jul 3, 2006 12:24 PM:I would like to respond to Pete Nice who said that his supervisor, an IT manager making 70k a year got caught in a sweep. I suspect it was because she was "under the influence." Otherwise, why would a woman of her caliber get "cought?" Just in case the judge neglects to tell her, there is an association of men and women who support each other in their efforts to stay clean and sober - it's called AA - Alcoholics Anonimous. They are listed in the phone book. There's a chair waiting for her with her name on it. Thank you Escondido Police!! One of your fellows "caught me" and changed my life 30 years ago and I am forever in your debt.
Gary wrote on Jul 3, 2006 5:57 PM:Everyone suspects that the majority of arrests and vehicle impounds are the due to Illegal Aliens. I think this the NCT and the Police Departments owe the facts to the public. Are these massive arrests and impounds due to Illegal Aliens or not? That is the big story here.
