Museum hosts music films

CARLSBAD ---- The Museum of Making Music will host a series of music-themed films and documentaries this summer including the Talking Heads' film "Stop Making Sense" at 2 p.m. July 29 at the museum, 5790 Armada Drive. Luiseno artifacts to be discussed

CARLSBAD ---- The Luiseno series continues with a look at how early Americans Indians used different materials such as rocks, shells, bones and plants to create tools, ornaments and a variety of objects, at 7 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Discovery Center, 1580 Cannon Road.

The discussion will address which tools and ornaments were used as a basis for a flourishing trade as well as other cultural activities such as the gathering of minerals to make paint for petroglyphs. Several Indian artifacts will be shown and discussed. Call (760) 804-1969.

Democrats host fundraiser Aug. 13

Author to discuss baseball's Angels

OCEANSIDE ---- Baseball fans are invited to come meet Bucky Fox, author of "The Highflying Angels: Their 50 Greatest Hits, Pitches and Plays," at 2 p.m. Aug. 5 in the Civic Center Library Community Rooms, 330 N. Coast Highway. The book covers the team's 2005 American League West championship season and highlights stars of the last four decades, from Dean Chance to Nolan Ryan to Reggie Jackson to Tim Salmon and Bartolo Colon. His previous book, "The Mets Fan's Little Book of Wisdom" is carried in the gift shop of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. OMA plans Mexico trip

OCEANSIDE ---- In response to the overwhelming wait list for the Oct. 28 trip to San Miguel de Allende, Oceanside Museum of Art and STS Tours are offering another tour to the charming colonial cities of San Miguel de Allende, Dolores Hidalgo and Guanajuato Nov. 2 through 8. Travelers will discover fabulous food, Mexican handicrafts, galleries and folk traditions, including a visit to the village of Ototonilco for the stunning frescoes on the walls and ceilings of the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, known as the Sistine Chapel of Mexico. Accommodations are at the elegant Real de Minas hotel, a four-star property located on the border of the historic center near the main plaza.

This tour plans to offer an optional fee-based art class with a local San Miguel artist or a lecture by author Robert de Gast, who wrote the book "The Doors of San Miguel." An extension to the revitalized, cosmopolitan capital of Mexico City is also available with visits to the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the Frida Kahlo Museum and a performance of the Ballet Folklorica.

Cost for the seven-day tour begins at $1,649 per person based on double occupancy. Reservations must be made by Aug. 1 with STS Tours by calling (800) 620-9995. KOCT seeks public's questions

OCEANSIDE ---- KOCT-TV is asking the public to submit questions to ask candidates running for Oceanside City Council. Election Day is Nov. 7. Yacht club offers weekend sailing course

Line dance lessons taught

OCEANSIDE ---- Line dance lessons are offered on Fridays at the Oceanside Senior Center, 455 Country Club Lane. Beginning lessons are from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and intermediate lessons are from 1:15 to 3 p.m. Cost for each class is $3 on a drop-in basis. Classes are taught by Helen Pietroforte. A quarterly line dance, open to the public, will be held at the senior center from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 17. Advance tickets are available for $3 or $3.50 at the door.

Spaghetti dinner served at VFW tonight

VISTA ---- The Ladies Auxiliary of Sgt. Maj. Ralph E. Gibbs Jr. VFW Post 7041 will host an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. tonight at 1717 E. Vista Way, Suite 117. Proceeds will go to purchase a much-needed new freezer for the post kitchen.

Cost for dinner is $6.50 and includes spaghetti, salad and bread. A fish dinner will also be available at menu prices and desserts are $1.

The VFW and its two auxiliaries have long been involved in helping charitable programs with an emphasis on work for veterans and their families, including projects at the VA Hospital in La Jolla, the Veterans Home in Chula Vista and the National Home for Orphans in Eaton Rapids, Mich.

Summer Jazz at the Moonlight begins

VISTA ---- The Big Band & Jazz Hall of Fame Orchestra will present its third season of diverse jazz concerts at the Moonlight Amphitheatre, 1200 Vale Terrace Drive, beginning with a "Tribute to Nelson Riddle" July 31. A highlight will be an appearance by Oceanside High School music student Shantae Moffet, the recipient of the first annual Shel Kaplan Jazz Scholarship Award. Moffet was given the opportunity to attend a jazz music camp, made possible by donations from audiences at the Big Band & Jazz Hall of Fame's 2005 concert dedicated to the late Kaplan, a former board member and creator of the "Summer Jazz at the Moonlight" jazz series.

Crime prevention events set in Vista

VISTA ---- On Aug. 1, Vista will join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 23rd Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event. Vista will celebrate National Night Out with a fair at Vista Adult School Literacy Center and a "Walk Against Crime" along a two-mile route through the neighborhood.

The festivities at the Literacy Center at the corner of North Santa Fe and West California, will begin at 5:30 p.m. There will be displays by the Sheriff's Department and the Fire Department (including a helicopter and several emergency vehicles), information booths, and entertainment. On-site registration and check-in for the walk will take place until 6:30 p.m., at which time the welcoming ceremony and demonstrations will begin. This year, the Sheriff's Department will be conducting a canine demonstration and the Boys & Girls Club will conduct a karate demonstration. The walk will be kicked off by Mayor Morris Vance at approximately 7 p.m.

The first 100 individuals to register for the walk will receive a free T-shirt. Registration forms can be picked up and submitted to the following preregistration sites through July 30: Boys & Girls Club of Vista, Vista City Hall (vity manager's office); Vista Adult School Literacy Center; and the Vista Village Sheriff's Office. Scrapbook Discovery Day held
