VISTA ---- Car fanatics can get their fix at this year's 17th annual Vista Rod Run that will take place in Vista's revitalized downtown district today.

Billed as one of the largest car shows in the San Diego area, the Rod Run is expected to have more than 300 hot rods on display from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Proceeds from the opportunity drawings at this year's event will go to the Boys & Girls Club of Vista, said Karen Clay, executive director of Vista Village Business Association.

"They are doing great programs for the children in our community," Clay said. "By supporting them, we are supporting the continued well-being of our children."

Prizes for the opportunity drawings, likely to be car-related items, will be announced at a later date.

The Vista Rod Run includes car competitions in which prizes will be awarded in several categories such as "Best of Show," "Best Upholstery," "Best Paint," "Best Graphics," "Mayor's Choice" and "People's Choice."

As another fundraising activity to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Vista, club leaders will stage slot car races at the Rod Run.

The slot cars, small hobby cars that run on a track, are being provided by Nomad Slot Cars of Vista, which is also providing the track and employers to manage the activity. A precursor to the radio-controlled race cars, these small toy race cars were popular in the 1960s and 1970s.

The public can participate in the slot car races by making a financial contribution to the Boys & Girls Club of Vista.
