Military Briefs: Purple Heart/Iraq Veterans honored

Rummage sale to benefit VFW


SAN MARCOS ---- The Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3795 of San Marcos will hold a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 19 at the post, 212 Mission Road. Donations, which are tax deductible, are needed for the sale. For information, call (760) 744-3795.

Young Marines hold orientations


CAMP PENDLETON ---- The Young Marines of the Marine Corps League is the Commandant of the Marine Corps official program for drug demand reduction. Membership is open to boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 17 who are interested in participating in a well-rounded, year-round program with emphasis on the traditions and values of the United States Marine Corps.

The purpose of the Young Marines is to provide an organized program devoted to development of character and physical fitness in the youth of America, as exemplified by the United States Marine Corps. Character building is one of the most important objectives of the program and all of the activities emphasize the importance of honesty, courage, respect, loyalty, dependability and a sense of devotion to God, country, community and family.

The Young Marines offer classes on a variety of subjects including: land navigation, close-order drill, mountain survival, customs and courtesy, clothing care, physical fitness and sexual harassment, to name a few.

There will be two identical orientation meetings at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 19 and 26 at the Corporals Course building #21441, Camp Del Mar, Camp Pendleton. Contact Leigh Dick (760) 415-5540 for more information and directions. The Camp Pendleton Young Marines will hold recruit training beginning Sept. 9.

VFW in need of donations


SAN MARCOS ---- Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3795 of San Marcos, 212 Mission Road, is in need of major repairs. The post is seeking contributions from local businesses, contractors and community members who are willing to offer their time, materials or services.

Roof, heating and air conditioning, electrical, plumbing and cosmetic repairs are needed. Donations also are appreciated. For information, call Cmdr. Bob Abrams at (760) 744-3795.

VFW hall rental available


SAN MARCOS ---- Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3795 of San Marcos hall rental is available for meetings and special events. Cost is $250, plus a $50 cleaning deposit. An additional charge of $100 is applied for use of the kitchen/galley, plus a clean-up fee if needed. VFW members can rent the hall for $150, plus a cleaning deposit.

VFW hosts Sunday breakfasts


SAN MARCOS ---- Veterans of Foreign Wars San Marcos Memorial Post 3795 and its Ladies' and Men's auxiliaries offer breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon Sundays at the post, 212 W. Mission Road. Donation is $5 for adults; $3 for children ages 12 and younger.

Money raised will help the VFW post remain open and continue to assist local veterans and the community.

VFW auxiliaries seek members


SAN MARCOS ----- Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3795 of San Marcos has launched a men's auxiliary. Eligibility is limited to husbands, widowers, fathers, grandfathers, sons, grandsons, brothers and half brothers of those who were or are eligible to join the VFW and who are at least 16 years old.

The VFW's Ladies Auxiliary also welcomes new members. Wives, widows, mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, daughters, granddaughters, sisters and half sisters of veterans may be eligible to join.

Oceanside Jaycees assist with Military Ball


OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside Jaycees have teamed up with the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion to assist with their military ball.

The 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion is presently deployed in Iraq and returns home in October. Their military ball approaches immediately after its return. The Jaycees and key volunteers are hosting a dress exchange for the women who are unable to afford a new dress for this ball. More than 300 wives will be outfitted. Some will have dresses to exchange but most will not.

Needed are dresses, shoes, accessories, etc. Donations can be dropped off from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at Cigar Grotto, 220 N. Coast Highway.

The Jaycees will also host a Salad Luncheon Fashion Show at 1 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Flying Bridge restaurant, 1105 N. Coast Highway. Tables of eight are $150; individual tickets $20.
