SAN DIEGO ---- Running back and return specialist Darren Sproles was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, ending his second season before it started. Sproles suffered a broken fibula in his left leg Saturday in the Chargers' first exhibition game.

Michael Turner likely will replace Sproles on kickoffs. Cletis Gordon and Gerran Walker will get looks on punts, with Eric Parker being the fallback option.

Sproles' 1,528 kickoff return yards ranked sixth among NFL returners last year; he also averaged 6 yards on punts.

"I feel for him,'' Turner said. "He's a good player, and he had been working hard. I know he is hurting.'

Meanwhile, coach Marty Schottenheimer revealed wide receiver Vincent Jackson was hospitalized Saturday night after the game with a chest contusion from possibly falling on a football. Schottenheimer acknowledged Jackson's absence on Monday but didn't say the player was admitted to an area hospital. Jackson is expected to be released by today.

"They expect him to be back and (it) not be of any long-term consequence,'' Schottenheimer said.

In another roster move, cornerback Raymond Walls was released.
