Poway chamber opposes shared airport at Miramar

POWAY -- The Poway Chamber of Commerce on Monday announced its opposition to the creation of a civilian airport at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

A written statement issued by the chamber said the organization "strongly believes that the joint military and civilian use if the airport will substantially jeopardize the security of our military and the overall safety of the citizens."

The position puts the chamber on a growing list of politicians, community leaders and organizations opposed to the proposal from the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.

Given the task of finding a site for a new or expanded airport to replace or augment San Diego Lindbergh Field, the authority chose Miramar this spring as its preferred site.

Authority officials envision a shared military and civilian airport on the base, which already serves military aircraft. Military officials have voiced strong opposition to the idea, however, citing concerns about safety and interference with the base's training efforts.

Voters will weigh in on the matter in November.

Chamber President and Chief Executive Toni Kraft said the chamber's board of directors unanimously voted to follow a recommendation from the organization's governmental affairs committee. That panel heard multiple presentations about the shared-airport proposal and attended all the San Diego Regional Airport Authority's meetings before concluding the idea was a bad one, she said.
