Legislature approves landmark community college bill

SACRAMENTO ---- The state Assembly and Senate have both unanimously approved a bill that would permanently revamp community college funding in California and yield nearly $2.8 million a year for Palomar College in San Marcos.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to sign the bill shortly, according to officials from the Community College League of California.
The Senate approved the bill 40-0 on Tuesday, and the Assembly voted 76-0 in favor of the bill last week.
The bill, SB 361, provides $209 million to ensure equal funding at the state's 72 community college districts.
"This legislation caps a historic year for community colleges, where the Legislature worked closely with Gov. Schwarzenegger to reduce student fees, provide the biggest budget increase for our colleges ever, and address longstanding inequities within the nation's largest higher education system," said Scott Lay, chief executive officer of the Community College League.

It wasn't enough to grant in-state tuition to these lawbreakers; now less financial help will be available for law-abiding citizens aspiring to attend college.
