Pechanga empire threatens Temecula
By: John S. Philipps - Commentary | ∞
Humphrey Bogart's character Fred C. Dobbs in "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" has been reincarnated in the form of Mark Macarro, chairman of the Pechanga, by virtue of him and his affluent tribe unceremoniously giving the boot to Lawrence and Sophia Madariaga after their lifetime of dedication to the tribe.
Not only has the tribe succeeded in cutting them out of their share of the gambling mother lode, more importantly it has purged them from their cultural heritage.
Macarro's response to the public that this is a very complex intertribal matter, not about profits, blah, blah, blah, essentially equates to the Mexican bandit's response to Dobbs that "We don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!" Face it, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck ...
Here's a challenge: If it's not about money, take that $15,000 per month for each of the 233 "disenrollees" ---- that's roughly $3.5 million ---- and donate it to charitable organizations in the area. Maybe the Madariagas will be able to get health care through one of these available programs during their remaining time in this life. Sadly, no amount of health care has any hope of mending their dignity.
A recently crafted water deal has opened up the door for future Pechanga expansion plans. This deal was described by Macarro as "a win-win for the Pechanga tribe and the Rancho California Water District." I seem to have missed the part about it also being a win for Temecula.
Additionally, this weekís failure by the Legislature to approve a deal between the Pechanga and Sacramento to make way for casino expansion is only a delay of the inevitable, with Temecula left standing on the sidelines with no control of the outcome.
So, Temecula, while you complain about your lifestyle degradation because Hooters came to town and Granite Construction wants to mine some rock on the other side of the hill, rest assured that the escalating influx of chain-smoking, alcoholic gamblers and other unsavory characters who are drawn to the Pechanga venue will continue to increase crime, traffic, pollution, noise, etc.
When you finally realize that the serenity of Temecula has been completely destroyed by the Pechanga empire, it'll be too late to ask Macarro for his stinkin' badge.
To Mark Macarro, in the slightly modified words of Fred C. Dobbs: "If ya know what's good for ya, ya won't monkey around with Temecula!"

How about another movie line wrote on Sep 4, 2006 7:18 AM:"Build it and they will come." But, according to Philipps, th "chain-smoking, alcoholic gamblers and other unsavory characters who are drawn to the Pechanga venue will continue to increase crime, traffic, pollution, noise, etc." are ALL out-of-towners. Am I the only Temecula resident who enjoy what Philipps'"Evil Empire" has to offer who resents his characterization?
Paulina's Kin wrote on Sep 4, 2006 8:10 AM:Excellent points. Ever wonder how the school districts can take money from an entity that doesn't like unions or their own legitimate people? Time to go to another casino that treats their family better.
John wrote on Sep 4, 2006 11:13 AM:Does anyone find any strange irony in the editorial title?
I AM Pechanga wrote on Sep 4, 2006 4:32 PM:There will be a protest at Pechanga soon. Please patronize another casino that doesn't treat it's people like Pechanga. Thanks to the NC Times for printing the news about how bad the tribe is treating original Pechanga Temecula People.
Rick wrote on Sep 5, 2006 1:39 PM:I hear that a protest is coming on Sept. 15. Should we avoid Pechanga?
Mike wrote on Sep 5, 2006 2:36 PM:Only one side of the story can be told. Complaints from the residence that live in the town and the ones that complains on traffic. Who is paying or assisting on paying for the roads or expansions, the schools to where your kids are going? Has this town gone downhill? Complaints like this make this town seems to going to be a ghetto. And they don't tell you what to do with your income.
Don wrote on Sep 5, 2006 5:03 PM:It is 233 disenrolled and counting. Macarro will continue to disenfranchise other members until he owns it all. With Macarro, it is all about MONEY. (You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time). Macarro's ethics are third rate - or is it Third Reich.
for all nations wrote on Sep 5, 2006 6:13 PM:...it is a sad day in indian country when some tribes apparently have conveniently forgotten what it means to be indian...a tribe is about shared land, culture, spirituality, and kin...not about "per capita" attitudes and "family, what family?" shame on you, pechanga council and enrollment committee!!! could swear you were giving private lessons in corruption to the government of picayune rancheria of chukchansi indians, aka chukchansi gold... or maybe they are just learning well through your sad example of what it means to be an indian in today's world...especially here in california...try listening to your ancestors for a change...they are trying to tell you something before your ways destroy all...
a local wrote on Sep 7, 2006 11:44 AM:Looks like Don is still one of the fooled ones. "Disenfranchise"? All former members are recognized as American Indians by the B.I.A. but not from Pechanga. Look that up.
Tired wrote on Sep 7, 2006 5:58 PM:Ok so he dosnt like Pechanga, thats ok but if there wasnt Pechanga what would he have to write about? No one said you have to live here. My grandfather was full Blooded and treated like dirt from People like this John person. His mother and other family members were taken from there homes and had to walk many miles to land that had no water, little food, ect. So keep your hate I will keep mine. The differnce is, your hate sells papers. And I was told to deal with mine, it wont make any head lines. It's not Temecula that owes, no one owes, but if it keeps myself and my family off welfare, well then I am sorry I make more money then you do. But were you raised on welfare John and had to struggle? No I think not. So keep your hate if you need to, just try to use that education that mommy and daddy paid for to reserch more on your storys of my people.
"This John Person" wrote on Sep 8, 2006 9:52 AM:Responses to "Tired" - You fail to comprehend the main point of the article, namely your leadership kicking out long-term tribal members just like you. You don't care because you're still there getting your check, but watch your back - you might be next. It has nothing to do with hate, only about people in responsible positions doing the right thing, which Macarro is failing the test. Sorry about Grandpa, but I'm no more responsible for his lot in life than for the people who suffered from Black slavery and Japanese internment. Get over it. Finally, I put myself through college, moved to Temecula before the casino, and probably make more money than you - unless you are figuring it based on money from actual hours worked, which you win hands down.

"This John Person" wrote on Sep 11, 2006 10:01 AM:"Laughing tired", or should I call you "Flapping Racist Lips"? You left out the part about "White man speak with forked tongue." The answer is..... wrote on Sep 12, 2006 2:30 PM:....Legalize it so others outside of the Indians can participate in the gaming industry in California. Allowing only Indians to have and run casinos in California is racist. I don't want to hear about "sovereign nation" nonsense. That card is only played when it's convenient for the Indians. Remember the Indian in the old TV commercial standing by the side of the road with a tear running down his cheek that said, "please don't litter"? He was cool! Legalize it for all Californian's and loud voices like Macarro's will slowly dim to a whisper, the state and local communities that embrace new casinos will enjoy a larger share of the winnings and ALL Californian's will win rather than just a select race. The token, well publisized "gifts" that they occaisionally throw our way will be mandated in the form of additional taxes for the communities that have to deal with them. The bottom line is that they don't pay enough taxes. A lot less skimming will occur as well as stricter regulation will be easier to enforce off of Indian land. When tribes are paying as much as the casinos in Nevada are forced to pay, I'll indulge them, Until then, save your money for Vegas, the odds are much better that you will win than at any Indian casino
to the answer is... wrote on Sep 14, 2006 8:58 AM:That guy in the commercial wasn't American Indian. A MAN PORTEAYING ONE. It's A Commercial. I like a lot of commercials but don’t base a race as a basis of it. As for “being Racists?” Hundreds of years of what Pechanga and other Natives around the U.S. have gone through. I swear everyone wants to take a lick of the sugar cube. As everyone jumps down on Natives as a race, turning the tables as being a gaming tribe, now everyone wants a cut. If you owned a business and would you allow someone to take your revenue and decide what to do with it? It is a business.
Paulina's kin wrote on Sep 14, 2006 10:30 AM:Well, "the answer is", unfortunately, the Indian in the commercial you are referring to is "Iron Eyes Cody" who happened to be Italian and has the same amount of Indian blood as one of the Pechanga Tribal Council members, which is ZERO. But he voted to kick out real Pechanga blood. Nice.
To Sugar Cube wrote on Sep 14, 2006 12:10 PM:Take up your first argument with Tree Cody. Using the logic in your second argument, Granite Construction is a business, therefore the people affected by their business have no say in what they do and you support their right to build the quarry.
my rebut wrote on Sep 18, 2006 9:33 AM:I don’t think I ever said see that Mexican in that McDonalds commercial? That was awesome! It's not a real issue with” tree phony” either. But there is a lot of issues that the tribe has overlooked but a lot of good that has come from the casino revenue throughout the years. Stuff that you are not even aware of. And now people want to make the decisions for them. They have been here before a lot people moved here and they are here to stay. Sorry if your not happy with the tribes decisions, maybe next time you can protest like the others in front of the casino and detour the 3-5 people that went in that night.
Say What, Rebut? wrote on Sep 19, 2006 10:38 AM:If you're so adept at spotting "phony" Native Americans, you should have a field day at Pechanga. Here's a thought - why don't you go protest in Sacramento with your lame argument that tribes should have the right to do as they please?
a thought wrote on Sep 19, 2006 4:02 PM:I have no reason to protest. Im glad i have the right to voice my opinion as well as you do. but hearing slander from articles like this and showing 1 side to this. I hear what you had to say and I know there are two sides to every tale, my fight isn’t in Sacramento, this town has its own problems where like I said fingers are pointed at the tribe. And I believe in that having sovereign land means what it means “self-governing and not ruled by any other state.”
a return thought wrote on Sep 19, 2006 6:17 PM:OK, "thought", good level-headed reasoning, and I agree with most of your points. However, I think the concept of "sovereign" is not intended to be the clear-cut definition as you suggest. Let's say the tribe wants to establish a toxic waste dump, or they want to hang any person they find cheating in their casino. Granted, these are extreme examples, but nevertheless, do you think they have that right?
another wrote on Sep 20, 2006 1:47 PM:The tribe’s decisions are not done without thought or a plan. And there are legalities to taking steps even on the reservation. Im neither a spokesman nor a tribal member. But I know they would not do anything stupid to jeopardize the tribe’s future. And I know that Murphy’s Law is not in effect there also. All the misconceptions of tribal life. Are you concerned with Power lines that go on tribal lands, Water that flows threw without tribes consent? It’s happened and it’s a long process to correct it also.
and another wrote on Sep 20, 2006 7:04 PM:The Pechanga tribe knows what they're doing and their success isn't by accident. The passage of Indian gaming laws opened the door for them, and they have made the most of it. I congratulate them on their success. I would offer that, if anything, they would be sensitive to consequences of their actions since, as you pointed out, they have gotten the raw deal in the past. I will point out that power lines are everywhere, and not exclusive to reservations, and they are receiving a benefit from the power lines. The bottom line is the Pechangas can do great things for their image by not leaving the City of Temecula out of their planning process and just being a good neighbor. And in case you're wondering, I have no ties to the City other than living here.
yet another wrote on Sep 21, 2006 11:47 AM: These lines and sewer lines were done before the casino opened. And right before the casino opened, they have built one of the biggest water systems for the reservation and to help the city with the flow. Usually lines went up in the old days and the reservation without consent did not benefit them. City developers wanted to build lines and take out The Great Oak that is over 1500 years old to put up power lines. That tree is sacred and like the land. Just makes me wonder how many of these residents know about development here in the city.
Still another wrote on Sep 21, 2006 3:24 PM:I believe the culprits behind the power line plan were SDG&E and SCE to tie into Edison's Romoland plant, which is currently undergoing major expansion. Legislation passed to annex land to the reservation and a successful campaign by community activists put an end to those plans. Again, a concerted effort by all peoples for the best interests of the community as a whole. You don't have to be a Pechanga to appreciate the significance of The Great Oak.
