Fundraiser to benefit teacher

TEMECULA ---- A fundraising cut-athon to benefit Temecula Unified School District teacher Sun Nelson will be held Sunday and Sept. 24.

Nelson was diagnosed with lung cancer 16 years ago and the event will help her pay medical costs.

Despite her illness, Nelson, a 19-year veteran with the district and an educator for 30 years, continues to serve on the district's language arts, family and consumer science and work experience committees as well as teaching.

Nelson has taught locally at Temecula Middle School, Rancho Vista High School, Temecula Valley Adult School and Rancho Santa Rosa High School. She was Riverside Country Teacher of the Year in 1994.

The event is sponsored by Cosmetology Institute Paul Mitchell Partner School and Esthetiques Salon.

Services provided will be haircuts, manicures, pedicures and eyebrows for $10, manicures and pedicures for $15, facials for $20 and facial swith eyebrows for $25. Proceeds will go to the Susan H. Nelson Fund.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days at the cosmetology school, 27468 Ynez Road, in the Target Center. For information and appointments, call Raquel at 694-4323

Local girl competes in pageant

TEMECULA ---- Kateva Rosato of Temecula competed in the National American Miss state pageant last month at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Garden Grove.

Kateva, 16, is a student at Chaparral High School, where she is a varsity cheerleader, participates in Club Talk (Teens Active in the Lives of Kids) and the Gifted and Talented Education program. She is also a Sunday school teacher at Cornerstone Community Church.

National American Miss is a program designed to help young women gain poise, self-confidence and communication skills that will serve them well in life.

CLASS NOTES

Parent, teen course offered

LAKE ELSINORE ---- The Lake Elsinore Youth Accountability Team, a coalition of local agencies reaching out to troubled youth, is offering a course for parents aimed at teaching them how to deal with difficult teens.

The meetings, which are scheduled to run from 6 to 9 p.m., begin Tuesday and will continue for the next nine weeks. The meetings will be held at the Youth Accountability Team office, 520 Chaney St., near Ortega Adult School.

There is a $17 fee for the course.

According to course organizers, parents will become stronger and wiser by learning how to set and enforce boundaries and how to resist pressure.

Adult school courses offered

MURRIETA ---- Murrieta Valley Adult is taking registration for its fall classes in computers, digital photography digital scrapbooking, travel photography, self defense, conversational Spanish, basic office skills. bookkeeping and dance.

City offers after-school program

LAKE ELSINORE ---- Free after-school programs are offered weekdays at the Lake Community Center.

TGI Fridays, for elementary school students, is offered Fridays, and TnT for Teens is for middle schoolers on Tuesday and Thursday. Activities include crafts, sports and games.

Both programs meet from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at 310 W. Graham Ave. Students must be registered by a parent. For information, call 245-0442.

Asian-American Scholars Program offer aid

United Health Foundation and PacifiCare Foundation are offering three scholarships totaling $20,000 to bilingual and bicultural Chinese- and Korean-speaking students who are pursuing careers in the health care industry.

Applicants must be college freshmen or sophomores and have a minimum grade point average of 3.8.

Sons of the American Revolution sponsor essay contest

High school sophomores, juniors and seniors are invited to enter the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest.

The contest is for an original essay written in English. The topic shall deal with an event, person, philosophy or ideal associated with the American Revolution, The Declaration of Independence or the framing of the United States Constitution. Essays will be judged for historical accuracy, clarity of thought, organization, proven topic, grammar, spelling and documentation.

Sponsored by Riverside Chapter, SAR, the contest is open to all students in Riverside County.

The local winner will be awarded a $50 U.S. Saving Bond and be submitted for state level consideration. The State Society winner is awarded $500 and moves on to the national contest where a $2,500 first prize and certificate is awarded to the winner. Second and third prizes finishers are also awarded at the national level. In addition, the winning essay will be submitted to the SAR Magazine for publication.

Special education group to meet

PERRIS ---- The Riverside County Special Education Local Plan Area Community Advisory Committee will hold its first meeting of the school year from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Val Verde school district headquarters.

The group is a state-mandated team of parents of children enrolled in special education and people with a personal or professional interest in securing appropriate services for students with disabilities. The advisory committee represent SELPA member districts and the Riverside County Office of Education. The meetings are open to the public.

Travel club accepting students

The Corona Student Travel Club, founded by two Corona middle school teachers, is accepting students to go on a tour in Costa Rica in February.

Travelers will explore the rainforest on the trip to San Jose, Paos Volcano, kayak on Lake Arenal to La Fortuna Waterfall, horse back ride through Monteverde Reserve, Santa Elena Cloud Forest and Manuel Antonio National Park.

The cost of the trip through EF Tours is $1,800. Parents may also tour.
