Carol C. Watkins

Del Mar's Woman of the Year

9/7/1933 - 9/23/2006

Carol Watkins, twice honored as "Del Mar's Woman of the Year," wife, mother, grandmother, writer, philanthropist, charity fundraiser, artist, community activist, born September 7, 1933, and passed peacefully September 23, 2006. As a friend said, "if enthusiasm were contagious, Carol could start an epidemic." Carol was born in Walsenburg, Colo., raised in Rock Springs, Wyo., and met her husband, Jim, while both attended the University of Oregon. They moved to Del Mar from Visalia, Calif., in 1966, to live and raise their four children, Kit, Kliff (Jim), Kris and KC.

Carol became a reporter for the Citizens newspaper and simultaneously opened several shops in Del Mar including the Vintage Press, the Sugar Plum Bakery (now Americana restaurant), followed by the Gruniuns Run Cafe in Carlsbad, and various art lofts. She started numerous little theater groups and then revitalized the Stratford Square building bringing unique tenants such as Virginia Igandas, Earth Song Book Store, Maggie Young at La Mariposa and the very popular Golden Rollin Belly. Carol

also opened an historic gallery in Stratford Square which is the most photographed building in North County. Carol also helped her husband Jim open a dozen resorts along the California coast, starting with the Del Mar Inn in the l960s and ending with the world class L'Auberge Del Mar in l989.

As a community activist, Carol was instrumental in forming the first "Citizens for Del Mar" organization to stop a proposed high rise development on the northern bluffs of Del Mar. Carol helped solicit a friend, Jim Scripps (of the Scripps newspaper fame) to purchase the property. Jim Scripps sold the upper portion to Helen Woodward and donated the bluffs to the City of Del Mar. Largely, as a result of Carol's efforts, the beauty and the grandeur of the natural northern bluffs of Del Mar are protected forever.

Another of Carol's passions was a fight against drug abuse. In addition with working under cover with Sheriff John Duffy on drug busts, in 1972 Carol organized with the sponsorship of the Del Mar Rotary and chartered T.I.P (Turn in a Pusher) for San Diego County. That organization is still active today as "Crime Stoppers." She was a longtime member of the HDSA (Honorary Deputy Sheriff's Association). The stories of Carol's drug bust escapades are legendary.

Carol loved horses, dogs and people, probably in that order. She was fiercely patriotic; unbelievably generous and made everyone feel like part of her family. She lived the American dream. She was a friend of "Bill W" for over 30 years and has helped literally dozens of souls who had lost their way, find a new and wonderful life of sobriety.

In 1985, Carol, who never thinks small, said "wouldn't it be great to have an Olympic Training Center in San Diego!" Edward Fike, of the San Diego Union wrote, "The odds against this magnificent asset being here in San Diego were so long that it would be considered something of a miracle." Nothing, however, would deter Carol from her dream and six years later, with help from her friend Bob Mathias, two-time Gold medalist and director of the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center, the San Diego Olympic Training Center was opened at Lake Otay. Also instrumental in helping Carol's concept and dream come true, were Ernie Hahn, the shopping center entrepreneur, Terry Brown, chairman of Atlas hotels, and Councilwoman Gloria McCall. The Lake Otay Olympic Training Center opened in the summer of 1991 so that athletes could train for the XXVth Olympiad in Barcelona, Spain, the following year.

In between Carol's other endeavors, she produced and chaired more than a dozen charity events including the Burt Bacharach, Bill Shoemaker Celebrity Tennis Classic at the Winners Circle Resort, the James Franciscus Charity Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, the Bruce Jenner Celebrity Tennis Classic, the John Duffy Foundation and co-hosted the World Celebrity Tennis Classic for Princess Grace in Monte Carlo. These charity events graced Del Mar with such celebrities as Farah Fawcett, Jack Klugman, Dick Van Patten, Desi Arnez, Donna Mills, Lyle Waggoner, Carl Reiner, Victoria Principal, Tim Conway, John Forsythe and others. Carol was unique and a favorite of the Hollywood crowd. Of Carol's many creative and off the wall escapades, her friend Dezi Arnez said "Carol, you are the real life Lucy." For example, at age 50, on a dare, Carol entered the Mrs. California Pageant competing against 20 & 30 year olds, and was a finalist - the oldest finalist on record.

Her husband, Jim said Carol had boundless energy, was mischievous as all get out, creativity and talent galore, plus being a wonderful wife and mother of our four kids and a heart as big as all outdoors. Despite the many adventures and accomplishments in her life, Carol will most be remembered for her kind and loving heart; for the way she made people feel special; she is truly unforgettable. Carol was the love of our lives and she will be deeply missed. She is survived by her husband, Jim, their four children and eight grandchildren.
