ENCINITAS ---- The city of Encinitas Parks and Recreation Department will offer surf lessons for adults and youth, ages 7 and older, this fall at Moonlight Beach. Surf Sessions will provide a surf instruction program of after-school, weekly and weekend classes; instructors are trained in CPR and first aid. Includes use of surfboards and wetsuits. Senior center offers rides
CARLSBAD ---- Carlsbad residents 60 years of age and older who cannot drive and are in need of transportation for medical appointments or grocery shopping can contact the Carlsbad Senior Center's Transportation Program for assistance. Transportation for medical appointments is provided Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Appointments must be made from 2 p.m. and end by 4:30 p.m. Service area is limited. Wednesday afternoons are reserved for grocery shopping at Stater Bros.
The first Thursday afternoon of the month transportation is provided to go to Wal-Mart or Trader Joe's. Mondays through Fridays, seniors can enjoy lunch at the Carlsbad Senior Center. The Senior Center provides transportation to and from the Center. Call (760) 602-4650.

SDA dinner auction planned
ENCINITAS ---- The Spirit of San Dieguito, San Dieguito Academy's annual dinner auction and celebration, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 7 in the garden of the home of the Meaghers, SDA parents. The event is organized by the San Dieguito Academy Foundation, a nonprofit organization that raises money to support programs of the oldest operating public high school in Encinitas.
The evening will include complimentary valet parking and a courtesy drink included with the cost of the ticket. Silent auction tables will offer a variety of items donated by SDA parents and the community. Following a live auction, food from North County restaurants including Kis, El Callejon, Firefly Grill and Wine Bar, Leucadia Pizzeria, Sage Grill, The Roxy, Yogi's and the Yellow Coyote Tortilla Factory will be available. Dancing to music by the parent-based band Rhythm Method will be featured.

'Invisible Children' shown at MiraCosta today

Northern Uganda has been called the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today ---- 1.7 million people have been forcibly displaced; an estimated 20,000 to 50,000 children have been abducted to fight as soldiers; tens of thousands of children commute nightly; and 130 people per day die in Northern Uganda due to violence. VFW plans Sadie Hawkins dinner/dance

School board candidate forum scheduled
VISTA ---- There will be a joint meeting of the Shadowridge Vista Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Vista to hear from the candidates running for two vacancies on the Vista Unified School District Board of Trustees. There will be a moderator who will address the group and present a pre-approved questions submitted from the audience and candidates will have a set time to respond. Basketball program for youths offered
VISTA ---- The Vista Parks and Community Services Department will offer a Youth Basketball Program for boys and girls born between 1989 and 2000. Learn to build a fountain
OCEANSIDE ---- MiraCosta College's Community Services Program will offer a one-day workshop that will teach students how to design their own personal artistic indoor fountain. Serenity Fountain will meet from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 14 in Room T110 at MiraCosta College, 1 Barnard Drive. The fee is $55. Students should bring a waterproof wok-style bowl six to 8 inches wide and three to 12 inches deep, and bowl filler including beach rocks, marbles, tiles, slate or marble slabs, shells or anything that is waterproof that can fill the bottom of the bowl. Discount taxi vouchers available
OCEANSIDE ---- In cooperation with Yellow Cab Taxi Company, discount taxi vouchers for seniors age 65 and older can be purchased from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Oceanside Senior Center, 455 Country Club Lane. One-way vouchers are $3.50. Seniors can purchase up to eight discount tickets per month. Tickets are also available at the Parks and Recreation Administration offices, 300 N. Coast Highway and by mail by calling (760) 435-5041.
Vouchers can also be purchased from Yellow Cab at the Oceana Community Center, 550 Vista Bella Drive from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on the second Monday of each month through November. For more information, call the Taxi Voucher Hotline at (760) 435-3915.
Tax rebate assistance available
OCEANSIDE ---- Free renters' and homeowners' tax rebate assistance will be available on a first-come, first-served basis from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays through to Oct. 10 at the Oceanside Senior Center, 455 Country Club Lane. Ask the volunteer at the front desk for a number. You qualify if:
- Your household income was $40,811 or less last year.
- You are 62 or older, blind or disabled.
- You are a U.S. citizen, designated alien or qualified alien when you file your claim.
- You owned and occupied your home or mobile home on Dec. 31, 2005. You paid at least $50 rent each month.
Bring the following documents with you:
- 2005 Income Tax Return (if you were not required to file a return, bring all income records).
- 2005 Social Security Statement (1099).
- 2005 Property Tax Bill (home/condo/mobile homeowners).
- Name, address and phone number of landlord, if you are a renter.
- Proof of age.
- Identification card.
- Booklet mailed to you by the Franchise Tax Board with your name and address label (Forms are available at the senior center for first-time owners).
The homeowners' program allows a once-a-year payment from the state to qualified individuals based on part of the property taxes paid on their home. A "home" is not just a house, but also includes a condo or mobile home. The maximum homeowner assistance payment allowed is $472.60.
The renter assistance program is a once-a-year payment from the state to qualified individuals based on part of the property taxes they pay indirectly when they pay rent. The maximum renter assistance payment allowed is $347.50.

Luncheon, fashion show focus on breast cancer prevention
VISTA ---- Vista Community Clinic, the North County African-American Health Coalition and Tri-City Home Care will hold the third annual "A New You" Breast Cancer Prevention and Healthy Lifestyle Fashion Show and Program at 11 a.m. Oct. 7 at Tri-City Medical Center, 4002 Vista Way.
The program includes education on breast cancer, luncheon and fashion show featuring breast cancer survivors who will share their personal stories and speak to the importance of early detection through mammograms.
Tickets cost $30 per person and tables of eight are available. Tickets can also be purchased to sponsor women in the community who would otherwise not be able to attend, including low-income women and spouses of deployed military personnel. Casa de Amparo to hold groundbreaking
OCEANSIDE ---- Casa de Amparo will hold a groundbreaking for the Child Development & Family Services Center at 10 a.m. Oct. 5 at Ivey Ranch Park. Supervisor Bill Horn, Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood and Dan Hammang, president of the Casa de Amparo Board of Directors will be in attendance to share a few words on the project. The city of Oceanside has provided Casa de Amparo with a perfect setting to construct two buildings, which will house the Child Development and Family Support Services Center. The new site will allow Casa de Amparo to serve 50 percent more children and allow families to receive counseling and visit their children in a tranquil park setting.
