Local immigration clashes on the Web

NORTH COUNTY ---- Migrant worker advocates who monitor popular day labor hiring locations posted a Web site this week featuring videos that appear to show Minutemen using uncivil tactics such as name-calling, yelling and profanity.

But the founder of a local Minutemen group said that the cameras do not show the full picture, that videographers are to blame for "provoked" reactions. He also said he was skeptical that the footage was accurate.

The Minutemen are an anti-illegal immigration group that has staged protests around the county, including larger ones at day laborer pickup sites in downtown Vista. The protests have prompted migrant worker advocates to campaign and rally against the Minutemen.

The dueling groups have hurled accusations of improper conduct at one another for months.

On Thursday, one of the women behind the new Web site, Claudia Smith, contended Minutemen members "have become increasingly aggressive, verbally and physically ---- and that is of great concern." And that, she said, is why the Web site went up this week.

"We wanted to put out there a sample of videos of clips that we have taken from several different sites and give people a chance to judge for themselves how the Minutemen speak and act when the media isn't looking," said Smith, who has been a central figure in the movement opposing the Minutemen.

Video clips on the site appear to show clashes in which a few Minutemen or their supporters are profane with people behind the camera.

The site ---- www.minutemenunvarnished.com ---- went up a few weeks back, came down briefly to be "finalized" and was unveiled again Thursday, Smith said.

"What we have up there speaks for itself," Smith said, "It's a very understated Web site."

On Thursday, Jeff Schwilk of Oceanside, who founded the local Minutemen group, had not seen the Web site until informed of it by a reporter in a phone call, during which he clicked through and watched a couple of the videos for the first time.

Schwilk blamed the day labor advocates and noted that the Minutemen featured in the clips had been "antagonized."

"These camera people are getting in our faces," Schwilk said. "We have a proven track record of not violating rights and laws. They come out to harass us. We were there to observe employers from breaking the law (by hiring illegal immigrants.) They do this purposely to antagonize."

Later, after viewing more of the footage, Schwilk said the videos were "taken completely out of context."

"They don't show the antagonization that brought that (reaction) on," Schwilk said. "They cut and edit to show anger from people who have had it with their tactics."

He also suggested the video and audio on the tape were not what they seemed.

"I think we need to be very skeptical," he said.

Schwilk ---- whose group's Web site is www.sdminutemen.com ---- said that people in his group have also videotaped clashes at day labor sites, including those he said depicts their opponents harassing them.

Some of that footage has made the rounds on Minutemen e-mail lists, but Schwilk said none had been posted to his group's Web site.

Is anyone else sick to death wrote on Sep 29, 2006 5:28 AM:of ILLEGAL immigrants? WHY won't our legislators just send them home? IF this is truly a federal issue we MUST make a change and vote against Diane Feinstein. She has an F- on immigration issues.

RH wrote on Sep 29, 2006 6:25 AM:I would be skeptical to believe the video because it is so easy to edit it so that it is bias toward the one who produced it. Also, my wife has to drive passed on of those day labor gathering points in San Marcos to get to work and is harassed by those who are loitering, which would also lead me to discount the video. Illegal imigrants are breaking the law simply by being here, how can people not see that?

These so called Americans provoke and abuse for their own entertainment. They act like school yard bullies. Shameful! The old lady is particularly offensive, what a disgrace to her children. She must live in the gutter, how could she ever walk into a church or associate with decent people after that video has been aired.

All they Got wrote on Sep 29, 2006 10:30 AM:After almost a year of these observation at day labor sites around the county from both sides, thats the best the ACLU types could come up with. Everyone on both sides are human. Humans tend to react eventially when confronted from an oppistion that oppesses them, no matter which side your on. From a phycological point of view, I tend to believe that these videos tend to show half the story. Same as if the minutmen would have a website, I'm sure their videos would only show the view they wanted folks to see. This looks to be a creation of more propoganda be this California Rural legal assitance foundation. Very sad. Someone had mentioned that the CRLA was under investigation by the Attorney General in an early blog. I did a little research and this Claudia Smith person was deeply rooted in the CRLA at one time. So, with a little research. My opinion would be there is no credibility to these videos. I wish that the efforts of all involved would be use in a better way.

Mike the Marine wrote on Sep 29, 2006 10:51 AM:Once again, a NCT staff writer shows unabashed bias when writing about illegal aliens and calling them migrant workers and taking a totally one-sided slant to the story. I can't believe the editor would let this blatently race biased story to be printed. And yes, minorities can be racist and bigoted too.

To All they got wrote on Sep 29, 2006 11:52 AM:I wonder how they got that fat lady to talk about shoving her sign in sideways and how they got her to give the finger; I don't care how badly you provoked my mother, she wouldn't even know those words or that things could go in those particular orifices. And the big leather guy didn’t seem too provoked when he banged into the man looking for work and suggested he had sexual thoughts about him. He is the type of bully who used to knock my books out from under my arm, and laugh. He got bigger but didn't grow up. Some patriots!!!!

To the Marine wrote on Sep 29, 2006 12:06 PM:How is it biased reporting to not assume someone's immigration status? No one proved those men were anything other than citizens looking for work. I have reason to believe some of those minute guys are on probation and are now intimidating law abiding citizens, but the NCT doesn't make the same assumption that I am making. Does that make them pro minutemen? I also have suspicion that the big guy dragging the flag around might have a joint under the front seat of his truck, but the NCT doesn't report that assumption. My point is that there wasn't one bit of bias reporting in the article. We had a stand off between guys hoping for a days work and some who looked as if they hadnt done a honest days work in some time. The article was pretty neutral and even went over board to be fair to the sixty second men.

Jorge wrote on Sep 29, 2006 12:12 PM:To "All they got:" Being "neutral" is not always attractive, Atg. What you need to do is study the facts. Do a bit more of the "research" like you did on CRLA. Become informed. Educate yourself on the issues. Don't be such a fence-sitter. Finally, no offense, but you could brush up on your spelling and grammar, too.

To Jorge wrote on Sep 29, 2006 12:44 PM:From All they got. I'm Mexican I'm still working on my spelling and grammar, but a least I am tring to see both side of the issue. I don't think the ACLU types are helping the Hispanic Cause, They are just stirring Racism. Me, the Legal Mexican don't like the ACLU strirring the pot. Before May 1st, my life was good and Normal. Had the illegals stayed behind close doors none of this hype would be happening. Now because of their activism all of us are going to be questioned. My parents came here legally in the 70's, so should everyone else. I am loyal to the USA, becuase I am American, I don't like it when Mexicans fly their Flag here. It is disresptful to the country that took me and my parents in. We have a good life now, why would we want to hurt ourselve by demanding special treatment.

I saw video's wrote on Sep 29, 2006 12:49 PM:The video where the guy is saying suck my _ick. That is so fake. You can totally tell it was edited in. As for the Day Laborer getting knocked a bit, looks like he was blocking the side walk to pedestrian foot traffic. Just kidding, all this immigration stuff is lame and getting old. No side to pick, just work on catching the illegal ones and the rest of us can go on with our lives. How bought those Padres, Huh?

So Cal Native wrote on Sep 29, 2006 1:36 PM:From what I see in the vid's, most of these people are white trailer trash themselves. When illegal immigrints and their supporters flew the American flag upside down, marched on the freeways and demanded rights, I changed. Any sympathy I had for the poor hard working aliens went out the window. That said: I'm glad you are here and are making yourself heard. Keep it up and encourage your friends.

american white male wrote on Sep 29, 2006 3:25 PM:I have read a lot of these postings and just have to shake my head. A bad situation that gets worse by the day. I don't like the fact that there are illegals here using services paid for by hard working americans, and i don't much care for the way the illegals are trying to demand rights. I also don't think they should neccisarily think they should all be sent packing either. I think there is a middle ground, but the patriotes we get to see are the worst of the bunch, and thier actions inflame the other party and it becomes a big circle of discontent. Get these people on the right track to becoming legal so everyone can shut the heck up

I see in these videos Frustration being vented on the people that keep putting hurdles in the illegal immigration issue. If the Government would just do there job, these men and women wouldn't be out there on the front lines. Complete meltdown of the government. A National problem!

If the Border Patrol were out "patrolling" as their title implies. The minutemen wouldn't be if the Border Patrol were out arresting illegal aliens... This is ludicrous!!!

fedup wrote on Sep 29, 2006 8:14 PM:"to Ed" what! you expect the BP to arrest illegal aliens? They don't even count the ones that they detect and have no officers to respond to as they cross. So the real number if illegals is way higher than anyone would imagine! They are also wasting big bucks trying to save the lives of those illegals as they cross in the deserts.......and so on and on and on. It is going to be up to all of us to vote out anyone who will not get tough and deport those that are already here illegally.

georgia wrote on Sep 29, 2006 8:26 PM:I think the real racists come from south of the border. How NON-diverse can you be? they should embrace america as an example instead of hold onto their outdated culture and traditions. If we gave california to mexico then everybody would be trying to cross over into nevada, arizona and oregon within 5 years after mexico has had it's way with cali.

??? wrote on Sep 29, 2006 9:24 PM:I don't understand. If they're illegal, why aren't they prosecuted? A friend of mine is migrating to Mexico, you wouldn't believe the paperwork he has to sign. Most of it having to do with not ever applying or accepting any type of public assistance, financial or medical, or costing the Mexican government any financial drain. Apparently, Mexico knows how to handle immigration.
