Escondido Chamber endorses three candidates

ESCONDIDO ---- The Chamber of Commerce announced Monday that it is endorsing Mayor Lori Pfeiler, Councilwoman Marie Waldron and candidate Dick Daniels in the Nov. 7 City Council race.

Pfeiler and Waldron are incumbents seeking re-election. Daniels is one of six outsiders vying for two open council seats on the dais.

All three of the candidates endorsed by the Escondido Chamber of Commerce are members. Daniels served two years ago as board president of the organization.

Of the other council candidates, only Darol Caster, who did not participate in a forum on Sept. 19, is a member.

Harvey Mitchell, chief executive officer, said the endorsements were based on candidate forums the chamber held last month.

"It has nothing to do with membership," Mitchell said. "We went back through (the transcripts) and looked at it. And based on their answers and their record, we felt these were the best folks for the job, from the business viewpoint."

The other candidates for council include: Erik Richard, president and chief executive of the Lake San Marcos Resort; Olga Diaz, owner of Blue Mug Coffee & Tea; Carmen Miranda, a teacher assistant; and Liz Gabrych, chairwoman of the Housing Advisory Committee and co-owner and operator of an Encinitas mobile-home park.

Former Councilman Tom D'Agosta is challenging Pfeiler for the mayorship.

All of the candidates are scheduled to participate in a televised forum hosted by the California League of Women Voters at 7 p.m. on Oct. 9.

Right on Bryan! I am voting wrote on Oct 3, 2006 10:57 AM:for Tom D'Agosta!!!!!

Too Bad wrote on Oct 3, 2006 12:16 PM:Lori, fine. Dick fine. Marie - invalidates the other two endorsements. Lori and Dick should not be grouped with Marie - it does them a disservice.

I will vote for wrote on Oct 3, 2006 3:33 PM:the one who drives the bus of illegals to the broder!

bryan wrote on Oct 3, 2006 6:10 PM:Olga Diaz has stated, "all people have a voice" when she was answering a question about illegals. She obiviously is a proponent of illegal rights. She states that our city has an image of being Racist. No way dont vote for this screaming liberal.

diaz would not wrote on Oct 3, 2006 6:11 PM:make a good council member. She is too liberal and does not know the city of escondido well enough.

readup wrote on Oct 3, 2006 6:13 PM:Out of the seven candidates for council 5 are for illegal immigration and the two that are against it are: Marie Waldron and Dick Daniels. We need to support these two candidates. All the rest want business as usual and want escondido to be a sanctuary city.

Put Marie Ed & Sam on the Streets wrote on Oct 3, 2006 8:16 PM:I have a great idea. When the rental ban (aka: illegal immigration ban)is passed, let's elect Marie Waldron (if she maintains a seat on council), Ed Gallo and Sam Abed in charge of enforcing the law!!!! Of course, they are too wimpy to enforce the law that is causing so much tension for all legal citizens - all legal citizens of all nationalities. When the City council approves multiple high priced housing in lower income areas (such as Rose & Washington)I wonder who the heck they think is going to buy the 3,000 sq ft homes in Mission Park? Marie, Ed & Sam are pushing this resolution under the guise of addressing over-crowding issues - when they are the ones that are mostly responsible for housing that is not affordable for most residents in Escondido (and 9% of SD County residents). I think the three "stooges" should be solely in charge of all complaints, all contact with the owners/landlords and the people that are accused of being illegal. They make me sick. I'm looking forward to 2008 - I have a personal mission to get Gallo & Abed out of office!!!!!!!!!!! And I sincerely hope that Waldron loses her seat.

Reality Check Revised wrote on Oct 3, 2006 11:05 PM:Marie Waldron is walking in the footsteps of Billbray - using illegal immigration to try to win a seat. Have you ever watched her at the City Council meetings - she is not the brightest woman. Illegal immigration is a major offense to our country. But, the resolution that Waldron initiated and which will surely be passed tommorrow is a racial one. We need leaders that can unite the city rather than divide. There is no way to enforce the resolution without be racist. Now, that's a real shame to Escondido because all those that support the resolution are teaching our children to judge people and situations by color. Marie Waldron should be ashamed! DO NOT VOTE FOR MARIE WALDRON. And for the record, initially Dick Daniels supported the resolution - but he has since done a 180 and thinks it will be too cumbersome. Dick Daniels is not "Fine". Dick is a advocate for developers and businessmen. He does not support the average citizen. DO NOT VOTE FOR DICK DANIELS. And Lori Holt-Pfeiler. I've met Lori on many occassions and she is a really nice lady. However, I think her time leading Escondido has come to an end. I went to the Mayoral Candidate Forum Esc Country Club on the 28th. One thing I noticed about Lori is that she has alot going on besides being the Mayor. She is the 2nd chair for SANDAG and she has multiple orgs/groups/clubs that she is active in. She kept talking about the region of southern california and how all roads lead to Escondido. Well, until we can get our infrastructure up to par and our schools passing No Child Left Behind guidelines and until we can get the new hospital built - the needs of the citizens of Escondido should be first priority. I do not think that Mayor Pfeiler is concentrating on Escondido alone. VOTE FOR TOM D'AGOSTA. Tom is life-long resident and his focus is Escondido. Tom has great vision for Escondido that includes all LEGAL citizens. Pfeiler should move on...after 14 years, it's time for new leadership.
