Using newspapers for the environmental education
By: TOM MORROW - Staff Writer | ∞
This is the last week for teachers in Carlsbad and Oceanside to sign up for the North County Times' "Newspaper in Education Program" sponsored by Waste Management of North County and Coast Waste Management.
The companies, which provide waste and recycling collection services in both cities, are sponsoring an environmental education-themed program in partnership with the North County Times for fourth-graders through freshmen in high school.
The program begins next week and will run through "America Recycles Day" on Nov. 15.
Teachers and their students will receive free weekly deliveries of this newspaper as well as participate in the "Earth Savers" program, an environmental-education curriculum developed by Waste Management.
At the completion of the program, teachers whose classrooms have participated will be eligible to win a gift certificate for the purchase of classroom supplies.
Carlsbad and Oceanside teachers interested in participating should contact Darlene Kingman at (760) 901-4106. The deadline to sign up is Friday.
FIRST PLACE: The El Camino High School Marching Band won first place in the 4-A Division on Saturday at the Westview High School competition in San Diego. The ECHS Pageantry won the Sweepstakes award. The ensemble is under the direction of Mark Lowery, Theo Ivey and Reggie Alaman. Congrats!
TEACHER TOURS: Carlsbad High School teachers are planning a series of tours to Europe and the Middle East next summer that should be of interest to those travelers who like company and some knowledgeable information along the way. Anthropology instructor T.R. Robertson will be leading an excursion to Egypt; English teacher Linda Fogarty will be touring Ireland; teachers Minnia Curtis and Lauri Britton will be heading up a tour to England and France. Two of these excursions are for both students and adults; Linda's tour of Ireland is for adults only.
Contact T.R. via e-mail at trobertsasb@yahoo.com; Linda at tfogarty@sdcoe.k12.ca.us; and for Minnia and Laura's tour, go online to www.eftours.com, and select "tour number 866517."
Prices and tour dates vary. Contact each of the above for costs and departure details.
STAMP TRAVEL: If you can't physically get away for a nice world tour, let the Encinitas Senior Center's Stamp Club take you on a stamp-collecting journey. Learn how to mount and protect your collection, the history of stamps, collecting for grandkids, and appraisals, auctions, sales and dealers. The club meets at 10 a.m. the first Wednesday of each month at the Senior Center, 1140 Oakcrest Drive, Encinitas. Call (760) 943-2250.
