Fundraising continues for Sherman property
The fundraising effort to preserve the Buena Vista Creek Valley/Sherman Propertygot a big boost recently from its youngest fundraiser, Rachel Kissin.ÝRachel, a seventh-grader at Roosevelt Middle School, turned in checks for $435 to help acquire the Sherman property. She had attended one of the recent open houses about preserving the valley and decided she wanted to take it on as a community service project. She made a basket at the event, using traditional Luiseno materials, and appreciated the special history of this valley to early Native Americans, and Spanish and English settlers.
ÝThe funds Rachel raised have been added to those of several hundred area residents and businesses to help acquire the134-acre Sherman property in the Buena Vista Creek Valley. When the community fundraising effort began in July, an estimated $1.5 million was still needed to acquire and permanently manage this land. Today, only about $500,000 is still needed, but there is a deadline of Dec. 23 to raise the final funds that are needed or risk seeing these priceless historic, cultural and natural resources lost forever.Ý
ÝThe next open house to see this land will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 21. There also will be a general meeting Oct. 25 and a bird walk through the area Oct. 28. To attend or find out how to help, contact Preserve Calavera at (760) 724-3887 or visit the Web site at http;//www.preservecalavera.org.Ý
