William Smith

FALLBROOK ---- William Gerard Smith, M.D., died from complications of pulmonary fibrosis Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006.

Born in Philadelphia in 1930, he moved to Fallbrook in 1993. He completed high school and two years of college at St. Meinrad Archabby in southern Indiana, graduated from St. Joseph's University and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed his psychiatric residency at the Pennsylvania Hospital and served in the Public Health Service in Lexington, Ky. Other professional positions include director of research for the Illinois Department of Mental Health in Rockford, Ill., professor of psychiatry and originating the head of the department for the University of Illinois College of Medicine. In 1985, he became the director of the new Mental Health Unit at Chambersburg Hospital in Chambersburg, Pa. He worked as a psychiatrist at the Perris Mental Health Clinic in Riverside County from 1994 through July 2005. Throughout 45 years of professional life, he maintained an active clinical practice. His works were published in many professional journals. He was interested in golf, tennis, flying, photography, writing and making stained glass projects.

Dr. Smith is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marilyn Fox Smith; daughter and son-in-law Cheryl and Charlie Dimont; son Gregory; and two grandchildren.

His family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (Research Fund), 1332 Halsted St., Suite 201, Chicago, IL 60622.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Oct. 28, at his home following a 10 a.m. Mass at St. Peter's Church in Fallbrook.

Lucia Pini, 93

ENCINITAS ---- Lucia Pini, 93, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006

Born Dec. 13, 1912, in Italy, she lived in Encinitas. She was employed as a seamstress.

Ms. Pini is survived by son and daughter-in-law Emidio and Christine Pini of Encinitas and daughter-in-law Rose Pini of Encinitas; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A viewing and rosary recitation are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, followed by Mass. All services are at St. John's Catholic Church, 1001 Encinitas Blvd., Encinitas. Interment will follow Mass at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego.

Frances Phillips-Lopez-McNaughton, 77

OCEANSIDE ---- Frances (Fran) Phillips-Lopez-McNaughton, 77, died of congestive heart failure Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born Dec. 10, 1928, in Pennsylvania, she lived in Oceanside for 51 years. She was a high school graduate. She was a headliner at Grans Gold Room in Oceanside. She was proud of her Scottish heritage and a member of the MacNaughton Clan. She enjoyed scrabble, singing and dancing. She was known in some circles as the "Red Dragon."

Mrs. Phillips-Lopez-McNaughton is survived by son Robert Phillips of Chino Hills; daughters and sons-in-law Sherrie and Howard Brown of Oceanside, Kathie Phillips of Vista, Heather Bryan of Everett, Wash.; and Rachel and Bob Lopez-Richardson of Chicago; brother Don MacNaughton of Newton Falls, Ohio; sisters and brothers-in-law Chris and Bud Rising of Palm City, Fla.; Isabele Smith of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and Kathy and John Richards of Champion, Ohio; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A private cremation is planned.

The family suggests memorial donations be sent to The Elizabeth Hospice, 150 West Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.

Janice Johnson, 67

ESCONDIDO ---- Janice Johnson, 67, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born Aug. 24, 1939, in Birmingham. Ala., she lived in Escondido. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by sons Chris, of San Diego, and James of Escondido; sister Patricia Richards of Ellapoosa, Ga.; brother Michael Martin of Girgwood, Alaska; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24 at El Camino Sorrento Valley Chapel, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego. Inurnment is planned at Rocky Mount Cemetery in Arab, Ala.

Virginia Shores, 94

NORTH COUNTY ---- Virginia Shores, 94, died Saturday, Oct. 14. 2006.

Born in 1912 in St. Paul, Minn., she lived in North County for over 50 years. She retired from the Rancho Santa Fe Association. During World War II, she worked in the engineering department at Lockheed in Los Angeles. She was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority,

Mrs. Shores was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Perrin Shore, in 1975; and son, Richard M. Shores, in 1997.

She is survived by sons Gary Shores of Florida and Mike Shores of Encinitas; daughter Cynthia Forrest of Oceanside; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park with the Rev. Linda Fox officiating. Inurnment will follow the service.

Bill Lawrence, 58

OCEANSIDE ---- "Captain" Bill Lawrence, 58, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006. in Molokai, Hawaii.

Born Nov. 22, 1947, in Oceanside, he lived in Molokai. He attended schools in Oceanside. He received his captain's license and owned a charter fishing boat for 38 years. He enjoyed fishing, surfing and embracing the island lifestyle.

Mr. Lawrence was preceded in death by his father, Bill Lawrence Jr., in 1986, and stepfather Charlie Ortega, in 1996.

He is survived by his mother, Marion Ortega, of Oceanside; brother and sister-in-law Charlie and Sherry Ortega of Bend, Ore.; and sister and brother-in-law Leslie and Peter Franco of Carlsbad.

A traditional Hawaiian celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 11 in Hanalei Bay on the island of Kauai.

Bertha Hubbs, 80

SAN MARCOS ---- Bertha M. Hubbs, 80, died of a heart attack Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, at the Pleasant Care facility in Vista.

Born Aug. 23, 1926, in Dalagua, Colo., she lived in San Marcos for 19 years. She was an executive secretary for the city of Lynnwood.

Mrs. Hubbs is survived by her husband of 53 years, Logan A. Hubbs, of San Marcos; son and daughter-in-law David L. and Pami Brown Hubbs of Beaverton, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law Laura N. and Randy Craig of Oceanside; sisters Celeste Driver of Carlsbad and Bette Wise of Beaverton; and four grandchildren.

A cryptside interment was held Oct. 16 at Fort Rosecrans Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Rooks officiating. There was a private cremation.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to Buena Vista Baptist Church, 145 Hannalai Drive, Vista, CA 92083.

Marion Cochran, 81

POWAY ---- Marion V. Cochran, 81, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, at Manor Care of Rancho Bernardo.

Born Dec. 7, 1924, in Topeka, Kan., he lived in Poway for 53 years. He was employed as a pipe manufacturing forklift operator for 18 years.

Mr. Cochran is survived by his wife, Billie L. Cochran of Poway; son Larry Cochran of Waynesville, Mo.; daughter Susan Allen of San Diego; and sister Marceil Hight of Santee.

A viewing is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at Poway Bernardo Mortuary, 13243 Poway Road in Poway. A memorial is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Dearborn Memorial Park in Poway.

Candy Provenzano, 82

OCEANSIDE ---- Candy Provenzano, 82, died of a heart attack, Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born Jan. 8, 1924, in Naples, Italy, she lived in Oceanside for 21 years. She graduated from Middletown High School. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Belford N.J., and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oceanside. She loved to dance, plan events for San Luis Rey Homes, do arts and crafts, and play table tennis, softball and basketball.

Provenzano was preceded in death by his mother, Genevieve Carotenuto, in 1936, and father Alfonso Carotenuto in 1973.

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Dominick Provenzano; daughters and son-in-law Candy Tracey of Las Vegas and Renee and Mike Occhino of Seattle; brother and sister-in-law Louis and Ruth Carotenuto of Holmdel, N.J.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren,

A private cremation is planned.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making donations in the memory of Candy Provenzano to the American Heart Association in the city of your choice.

Angeline Dahlson, 88

VISTA ---- Angeline Dahlson, 88, died at her daughter's home Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006.

Born July 18, 1918, in Brainard Minn., she lived in San Diego for 53 years and in Vista for 1 1/2 years. She was a homemaker who loved to cook and bake.

Angeline was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Paul Dahlson, in 1987.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Barry Knowlton; two grandchildren, Barry J. Knowlton, Jon-Paul Knowlton and his wife Rachel; and great-grandchildren Trevor and Koral. Her sister, Rene White, lives in Spring Valley.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, at New Community Church of Vista. A reception will follow.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to Elizabeth Hospice or Redwood Elderlink Social Adult Day Care, both in Escondido.
