Activists to protest migrant camps

NORTH COUNTY -- Anti-illegal immigration activists and their supporters plan to camp Saturday near migrant camps in McGonigle Canyon to protest illegal immigrants living in the area.
The event was widely promoted earlier this week by radio talk-show host Rick Roberts, on Web sites and via e-mail by the San Diego Minutemen, a North County-based, anti-illegal immigration group. Roberts and Jeff Schwilk, founder of the San Diego Minutemen, could not be reached for comment.
Julie Adams, a Rancho Penasquitos resident who lives less than a mile from the camps, said the shanties and the people living in them create numerous problems, including crime, pollution and fire hazards. She said she plans to participate in the camp event to raise awareness about the situation.
"This is a huge problem," Adams said. "Migrant camps in the canyon are dangerous."
An estimated 300 to 500 workers live in the canyon camps near Torrey Santa Fe Road and State Route 56. Most work in nearby agriculture fields, at nurseries and construction sites and as day laborers. Many are illegal immigrants from Mexico who say they can't afford the high cost of rents in North County.
Immigrant rights activists say the city is working to remove the camps. Claudia Smith, a longtime activist, said the goal of those organizing the protest is to harass the workers.
"This is just to hassle and intimidate the migrants silly," Smith said. "(The camp) is being closed down once and for all."
McGonigle Canyon falls within the jurisdiction of the city of San Diego and has been home to migrant workers for decades.
In the late 1980s, entire families lived in holes dug in the ground or shacks made of wood and plastic tarps. In the mid-1990s, most of the families were moved out of the camps and into apartments by nonprofit agencies, activists and city officials.
Though much of the agricultural land is being transformed by housing developments, migrants continue to live and work in the area. Farmworker advocates say the workers, predominantly men, are forced to live in the canyons and brush by the high cost of living and their need to save money to send to their families.
But critics say the camps attract criminals, drug addicts and prostitution. They point out that beer cans, condoms and syringes litter the camps. Without running water, the migrant workers use a stream at the bottom of the canyon to bathe, wash clothes and cook, critics say.
In an e-mail, activists invited people to attend Saturday's event.
"Stay a couple of hours," according to the e-mail. "Tour this authentic Oaxacan third world village right here in America, or stay the whole night and fiesta with the illegals!"
Jose Gonzalez, an immigrant rights activist from Oceanside, said the message makes it clear that event organizers are not interested in the welfare of the migrant workers, but rather aim to humiliate them.
"These are the same people that we see at day-labor sites," Gonzalez said. "I feel sorry for them, because they are the ones that say they are defending migrants, but when the cameras are not around, they insult them."

Send them back across the border! wrote on Nov 17, 2006 3:39 AM: Let us get it straight. No one is forcing the illegal aliens to live in the canyon or anywhere else in the United States! They came her illegally, crossed the border on there own, breaking our laws and are living in the canyon by choice! They are criminals! The authorities know where they are and do nothing about it! I'll say the camp attracts criminals! If there is a citizen of the United States living there he/or she are the only person not a criminal. How can any journalist be so dumb as to think that the citizens of the United States would buy that tripe.

But we are not interested in humiliating them. In that regard the Mexican government and their cohorts have already done a superior job.

These people have homes but they are in Mexico or south and came here illegally. If they did not send all of their money home, then they could afford to live "legally" in an apartment or house. You are turning this country into the third world hole that you left. However, you don't want to obey our laws. You so called rights activists answer one question, are illegals afforded the rights under the U.S. Constitution?

Che's Lounge wrote on Nov 17, 2006 8:20 AM:This is textbook racism. There IS no "huge problem". The recent statistics on usage of our medical care sytstem only confirms this fact. This is all a facade to divert our attention from the failed war and the local defense contractors who make a buck off of killing people by the thousands. It also gives racists, such as those criminals who defile the name of the patriots who fought for our freedom in the 1700's, some way to vent their obvious frustration over the lack of control over their sad lives. It's a quick fix so they can feel as though they are patriotic and empowered. In fact they are woefully uneducated. They should grow up, learn to read instead of talk, and rehumanize themselves.
NCT Gets it Wrong Again wrote on Nov 17, 2006 8:36 AM:As usual, the NCT never lets the truth get in the way of a good story! This event was organized by Rick Roberts and local residents in Penasquitos. Of course the 350 members of SDMM support this event and have been trying to get ICE to clear this canyon cleared of 300 illegals for about 6 months. ICE is broken and no longer works for the people. But now the population is rising up to take action. We will keep fighting for Americans here in SD County!

Work for cash, don't pay taxes, get free education, free health care, free social services, send 2/3 of your tax free income to another country and squat on someone's private property because you cannot afford housing??? The costs to clean up these migrant camps is born by the owner of the land, not those who polluted it by living there. Just one more thing illegals get for free...Maybe the employers of those living in the canyon should be responsible for the canyon's clean-up!

Americans are not accustom to living in Third World conditions and Americans should put a stop to this horror. If it is to embarrass anyone our Political leaders should be embarrassed.
To Che's wrote on Nov 17, 2006 11:28 AM:Racism? Why is this racism. This has been an on going problem before the war. It is just getting bigger and bigger or haven't you noticed, maybe you were reading too much and not going outside your home. If there is no problem with the medical care system, then why don't you pick up the bill and those who agree with you. I can think of better ways to spend that money. Why the name calling? I think the majority of us are educated, the uneducated don't care! It isn't the color of their skin it is "illegal". As for the patriots, yes they fought and died for the freedom of this country so that we can complain. Everyone is so afraid to say anything. Who is going to clean the mess? You? Did you see the prostitution that went on over there? I don't have a sad life, in fact I have a great life. God has blessed me over and over again, but he also blessed me with a brain. When is enough enough. At least the people complaining are doing something. Are we Activist because we want to keep this country legal? Why don't you let these "illegal" migrant people in your backyard? What about the rape that was there a couple months ago? I assume you want open borders so that anyone who wants to come in can? Oh by the way I am of Mexican descent!

Greg in Oceanside wrote on Nov 17, 2006 3:33 PM:These so-called migrant camps are cities unto themselves. And like other traditional cities, these camps have their fair share of problems associated with humans living in such close quarters. For example, it’s a known fact that these camps are a magnet for prostitution, create their own waste, whether it’s human or garbage, and are a general nuisance to the communities that border them. What is it about the eradication of these camps that needs any debate? The local law enforcement agencies, INS, ICE, and Border Patrol needs to descend down on any of these camps and get these people out of there before things get too far out of control.

My family came here legally over 50 years ago from Latin America and certainly didn't come here to see this beautiful nation transformed into a Third World Mexican barrio. What's worse is that our elected officials and law enforcement have allowed this to occur - is this what America is all about? The inhumanity here lies solely and squarely with Mexico and its government. It's time for Mexico to account to its own people and take care of them. It's time for Mexico to heal itself and do the honorable thing: call your people back home.

One token religous cerimony on Sunday does not make it right. It just makes me ashamed. Thank you Rick Roberts for doing this.

It's time to start the deportations and seizing the properties and assets of these law breakers. Once a couple of business owners and home owners find themselves in jail for hiring illegals, then and only then will illegal immigration be dealt with.

Why should we be obligated to pay for the upkeep of illegals while they send their money to Mexico? It must be going to Vicente, 'cause he's about the only one left in that corrupt and violent nation - oh,yeah! Calderon. You can bet it will just be more of the same garbage spewing from him too. "America would collapse without the help of our people" Ha! It's Mexico that would collapse if they were sent home. Perhaps, however, it would teach Mexico that they must take care of their own. They have no pride whatsoever. The just push their people out and don't care if they die in the desert, anything to get rid of them so the elite can live high on the remittances. All this and Washington stands silently by while we are invaded and colonized by a third world country - just what our forefathers envision for this land.

I have tried to clear them up on my own so this movement is great to see the taxpaying citizens standing up together against this backwards system. I look forward to more such events and hopefully an organization or awareness group that can put the word out so that we can come together during these times.

At some point in your life, even something as simple as the fruits and vegetables you eat, came from these undocumented workers.
