Perfect storm led to switch

Unlike official Washington, Americans take seriously their Constitution with its built-in checks and balances. They want a government that is responsive to their needs and their will. When they don't get it, they take action.

Last Tuesday, the American people spoke. Massive partisan gerrymandering of congressional districts, such as occurred several years ago in Texas and in other states, was intended to make such an expression of the public voice unlikely. That the effort failed so massively to quash the public will merely illustrates the depth of the public's outrage at the Republican Party in particular and at unresponsive big government in general.

Viewed in this way, the election of 2006 was similar to the election of 1994. Except for a brief period of

I hope the Democrats realize wrote on Nov 13, 2006 5:40 AM:America will NOT tolerate any plan that includes Amnesty for ILLEGAL aliens. Deportation is what most Americans want. The Republicans wanted ILLEGAL aliens for their supporters, big business. Democrats need to understand America is tired of the problems brought to our country by all the ILLEGAL aliens and the costs for their education, crimes and the terrible cost to our neighborhoods.

Fat freaking chance. The 14th Amendment to the Constitution (remember the post-Civil War Amendments?) gives 'em that right. The prohibition against "ex post facto laws" prevents retroactive criminalization of their status as U.S. citizens. So do you break up families? What you call "amnesty" is the response - however imperfect, to dealing with that reaility and reconciling it with our 230 year old national charter. Translation, we have to do something with the people already here, and it would be ILLEGAL (y'all's favorite word) to deport the kids of "illegals" home with their parents. The Fed Government needs a multi-pronged approach to stop new illegal immigrants, create economic pressure on the countries from which they emigrate, enforce the existing laws against all employers in this country (right down to Mr. and Mrs. Jones and their day-laborers/landscapers/housekeepers) and fine or imprison violators, including Boards and CEOs of corporations of companies which tolerate or condone hiring of illegals. Do not board the corporate jet, do not get your bonus, go directly to jail. Then work out some way to legitimize those already here, and tighten border enforcement. Yeah, it may not stop it completely, but an approach like this will slow it to a trickle. Anything short of a comprehensive approach will fail.

By loading up Rep in some districts and Dems in others, it re-assures each will be re-elected. If the Dems had not gerrymanered the districts and made each closer to 50/50 they could have swept a whole bunch of seats. But that would put them at risk in each election. They were so worried they would be voted out, they choose not to risk it and not to let the voters have a choice.

We do not have statesmen any more. Anyone remember the -Keating 5-. The Columbia Savings and Loan scandel from a few years ago? Alan Cranston our fine elected official who resigned in disgrace!
