Interfaith in need of turkey donations

ESCONDIDO -- Interfaith Community Services is looking for a few good birds.

Although the social service agency has enough birds to feed the hundreds of families and individuals expected to show up for its annual Thanksgiving dinners this week, its freezers have almost no additional turkeys.

Normally, Interfaith relies on about 200 turkeys donated in the build-up to the holidays to help stock its pantries for its meal programs throughout the season. As of last week, there were just five, according to Interfaith's Deborah Andreasen.

Interfaith stores donated turkeys in its deep freezer, and uses about six a week for its meal programs. In addition, the agency usually distributes at least one turkey to each of the families staying in the managed apartments it operates as temporary shelters.

"I don't think we're going to be able to do that for Thanksgiving this year, unless we get quite a few more turkeys," Andreasen said.

Donations of turkeys and other food items can be made at Interfaith's two North County sites, 550-B W. Washington Ave. in Escondido, or 2195 Oceanside Blvd. in Oceanside.

More information is available by calling (760) 489-6380.
