Governors want more money for illegal immigrant prisoners

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a letter Monday asking President Bush to include $950 million in next year's federal budget to help offset the cost of jailing illegal immigrant criminals in state prisons.
Under a federal program, called the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, states receive money to reimburse them for the cost of housing illegal immigrant inmates. But the president has proposed eliminating the program in recent years.
"Until the federal government can achieve its goal of restoring safety and security throughout our border regions, every effort should be made to compensate the state and local governments who have stepped up to fill this gap by policing and incarcerating criminal aliens at their own considerable expense," according to the letter.
Since 1990, when the payments were first written into federal law, reimbursements have shrunk. Last year, Bush proposed no funding for the program, but Congress restored $405 million, about 40 percent of which went to California. State officials say illegal immigrants cost the California prison system $750 million a year.
Governors from 10 other states also signed the letter, including those from Washington, New Jersey, Arizona and New Mexico.

Scammed again! wrote on Nov 21, 2006 5:49 AM: So, let us take a look at the situation and see how we stand as tax payers. Our Governor says he needs 950 million next year to "help" offset the cost of jailing convicted, illegal aliens. I think it is safe to assume the cost last year was about the same. The president refused to reimburse the states last year but the congress coughed up 405 million of which 162 million came to CA. State officials say it cost our state 750 million a year. Something is amiss here. Perhaps our governor is trying to get reimbursed for prior years which would explain the difference in 950 million and 750 million. So in my figures I will use the lesser of the two;i.e., 750 million. so if congress coughs up another 162 million this year then we are in the rears 588 million in the state of CA alone. I wonder where the cost to maintain the illegals in jail will come from? It will come right out of we the taxpayer's of California pockets. Did I hear the President say that he and congress were giving us a tax break? Did I hear him say he was lowering our taxes? Do I hear him brag about giving us a tax break? Does this sound like cooking the books? Stay tuned folks, Republican or Democrat doesn't matter - politicians are the same regardless. It will happen again and again. The bad things about it is they think it is the right way to do the business of the United States, and they don't think it is crooked. Heck, you know as well as I do that to be a politician one has to accept the fact up front that he is going to be a liar and a crook. I get so tired of being scammed.

Diane wrote on Nov 21, 2006 9:49 AM:Makes me sick! Imagine what 950 million could do to help our low-income Seniors and needy American citizens throughout the state of California? Mexico take your sorry citizens and their ungrateful "anchors" back to your cruddy Country. We are sick of them.

The constant need for money for the upkeep would not be necessary if we just sent them home. Of course, as long as the president wants them, he'll find someway to keep them.Perhaps in 2008, we'll be smart enough to elect someone who will put his own citizens before the demands of foreign leaders, anti-American organization, including the ACLU, and big business. And don't forget the illegals themselves who think it's one of their God-given rights to break into this country.
dennis wrote on Nov 21, 2006 10:19 AM:And this amount is grossly understated if the truth were known. What utterly amazes me is the fact that many of these illegals are repeat offenders who have been deported many times only to return and commit more crimes. his is only part and parcel of the real cost of illegal immigration.
What the Governor should be saying wrote on Nov 21, 2006 10:52 AM:Until the Federal and State governments can achieve their goal of restoring safety and security throughout our cities and towns, every effort should be made to compensate the local governments (Escondido), who have stepped up to fill this gap by enacting their own laws to combat the ill effects of Illegal Aliens at their own considerable expense.
Standing up for CA wrote on Nov 21, 2006 2:57 PM:At least someone is standing up for the state. Not sure what the senators and reps in congress are doing but putting people in jail cost more than going to college. It's a shame that money is wasted on things that nobody benefits from and can do anything about because Mexico will not take care of its own people and problems.

We keep electing this pro-illegal, pro-open borders whores like Feinstein and Pelosi and Arnold. The solution is simple, Arnold you moron. DON'T LET THEM COME HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. CLOSE THE BORDERS!
Bill2 wrote on Nov 23, 2006 11:12 AM:Maybe we could use the California National Guard to close our borders if our President hadn't just recently quietly (sneakily ?) pushed thru a law making them part of our National military. They were never meant to be anything but a State military that could be CALLED in case of National emergency - NOT part of the Federal forces.
