North San Diego County School News Briefs: Independent school plans meetings

ENCINITAS -- Pacific Ridge School, a new independent school to open in the fall of 2007, will hold an admissions orientation at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 10 at Quail Botanical Gardens, 230 Quail Gardens Drive.

Families interested in learning more about the school and applying for enrollment in the 2007-08 school year are invited. The orientation will include in-depth information on the school's curriculum and application process, and provide opportunities for parents and potential students to ask questions of Eileen Mullady, head of the school, and other PRS staff. The meeting is one in a series of events planned through January to provide news and information about the school to the communities it will serve.

Scholarships offered to Latinos

NORTH COUNTY -- High school seniors of Latino ancestry with strong leadership and academic skills can win thousands of dollars for college and a new laptop computer from the Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards program. Gold, silver and bronze medallions will be awarded in several categories. Applications must be submitted electronically and mailed materials postmarked by Feb. 3. Financial Aid Night tonight

CARLSBAD -- The Carlsbad High School Guidance Department will sponsor a Financial Aid Night at 6 tonight for Carlsbad High School senior students and their parents. Two on-campus sessions will be held -- a presentation in English in the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center and a presentation in Spanish in the library. The event will provide valuable information to all seniors who plan to attend a four-year college, community college or an accredited vocational, technical or trade school to further their education after high school. CHS has busy holiday season

CARLSBAD -- The Carlsbad High School Associated Student Body Council had a busy holiday season.

The group sponsored a food drive for the Carlsbad Christmas Bureau involving more than 20 classrooms and the school library, collecting food for needy families in throughout the city. The council also sponsored five families with a Carlsbad high student in the family, each with a CHS student, giving them holiday gifts and items they can use on a daily basis. Council members also baked one dozen cookies each and delivered 36 dozen cookies to five retirement homes in the community.

A total of 15 classrooms competed in the school's annual holiday door decorating contest.

Parent workshop to be held

CARLSBAD -- Parent Project Jr., aka Loving Solutions is a course for parents of hard-to-handle children from 5 to 10 years old. Classes will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evenings starting Jan. 23 and will be held at the Carlsbad Senior Center, 799 Pine Ave. Fees are $25 for individuals, $35 for couples. Parent volunteers sought

CARLSBAD -- Aviara Oaks Middle School is looking for parent volunteers to join the Parent On Campus program. Parents walk through the campus during lunch hour to make sure students are being safe and following the rules. Parents also have a chance to see what goes on at school and how their child interacts with others. Hours are 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Volunteers can sign up to visit as often as they want. ECHS Site Council plans meeting

Bonsall Elementary School schedule announced

BONSALL -- There will be a slight revision to the schedule in the Bonsall Elementary School this year. Thursdays will be early release days with the schedule as follows: Kindergarten: 8:45 a.m. to 12:55 p.m.; and grades 1 through 5 from 8:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.

The hours for the other days are: 8:45 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., kindergarten; and 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. for grades 1 through 5.

Another change is that the school start time is 5 minutes earlier, and early release day wil be every Thursday.

Escondido resident earns scholarship

Jennifer Greene of Escondido recently earned a $3,000 veterinary medicine scholarship from Kansas State University for the 2006-07 academic year. Scholarships this year total $9 million. Most are made possible through donations and gifts to the Kansas State University Foundation.

Financial Aid Workshop planned

RANCHO BERNARDO -- Rancho Bernardo High School, 13010 Paseo Lucindo, will host a Financial Aid Workshop in the school's Performing Arts Center at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 9. Presenters will discuss grants, scholarships, loans and work-study programs, and will introduce the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Buick Invitational tickets on sale

ESCONDIDO -- The San Pasqual High School boys basketball team is selling tickets to the 2007 Buick Invitational, to be held Jan. 22 through 28. Tickets cost $15 and a valid for weekdays and weekends, a savings of $4 to $9. All proceeds from the sales will go to the team. For tickets, call Jim Eslinger at (760) 519-5141.

Escondido man enters medical school

Scott Gregory Howard of Escondido has been accepted to medical school at the American University of the Carribean in Dutch Antilles.

An Escondido High School alumnus, he also attended San Pasqual High, and graduated with honors and distinction from UC Santa Barbara as a Cell and Developmental Biology major.

While in high school, Howard was named a Chargers Champion and won a $7,500 scholarship and a laptop. He earned several other scholarships, including a Ray Kroc Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement and community service. He was an officer for Amnesty International, a member of the National Honor Society, played varsity golf and performed community service in Mexico and Mississipi. At Escondido High School, Howard was named Outstanding AP Statistics Math Student of the Year.

While at UCSB, he worked with an autistic man and as a physical therapy aid for the Human Performance Center in Santa Barbara, which specializes in retinal detachment. He plans to study medical sciences in the Carribbean for five semesters, then transfer to a United States teaching hospital. He said he will decide on a specialty while working as a resident.

T-shirt logo contest offers cash

POWAY -- Poway High School students are invited to enter this year's Grad Nite T-shirt Contest. This year's theme is "Shipwrecked in Paradise." The first-place winner will receive $1,000 and a Grad Nite T-shirt featuring the winning design. Second- and third-place winners will receive $50 and $25, respectively. Contest guidelines are available in the school's front office, the library or from any art teacher. Entries must be submitted by Jan. 12 to Room N3101. Senior citizen volunteers sought
