Joyce Hope Knott

Wife, Mother, Teacher, Chef, Friend

She Knew No Strangers

Jo, or JoJo as those who knew her called her, passed from our world into the loving arms of Jesus the evening of December 23, 2006, at home. She lived and loved the life she was given to her very last breath surrounded by her family together with the help of Oceanside First Responders who gave every effort to revive her. However, her weakened health and heart gave way. We followed her wishes of "no heroics were to be expended without the presence of a viable chance of resuscitation." Sadly, regretfully our powerlessness released her and we respectfully followed her wishes.

JoJo was born on Feb. 26, 1927, in Takoma Park, Maryland. She was the daughter of Thomas R. Middleton and Lillian M. Sloper. She always said she was born in Maryland "by mistake" but was a "Virginian by blood." Shortly after her birth, her mother suffered a nervous breakdown and she was taken in by her grandparents, Archibald and Kate Sloper and they raised her until she was nine years old. Then she returned to live with her family till her late teen years. JoJo has three sisters: Betty Pippin and Shirley Gallagher, both residing in Luverne, Alabama, Judith Moore living in Vienna, Virginia; and two brothers, Thomas R. Middleton and Kenneth Middleton, both residing in Lakeland, Florida.

JoJo was married to James "Harry" Knott Jr., for over 50 years and they had five sons together, James "Jimmy" Harry Knott III, John D. Knott, and Berl E. Knott all residing in Oceanside, Calif., Lyndon B. Knott Living in Vista, Calif., and Keith W. Knott, residing in Dixon, Tennessee. She also embraced two formal stepdaughters, Diane Schnittger of Oceanside and Angela Salisbury of Lowell, Florida. She had grandchildren: Bruce, Kenny, Lisa, Kody, Joy, Anna, Pam, John, Richard and Chris; and many great-grandchildren. JoJo's and Harry's love of family and children went beyond their own children and they took into their home untold numbers of children and families over the years. Those they took in were outcasts of society, too poor or troubled, rejected by parents who had substance abuse or martial problems and/or those experiencing military overcrowding situations. It was common for sleeping bags to cover the floors and JoJo - apron on - could be seen at the stove from morning to night seeing to the needs of others. Though they are too many to name here, each and every one of them was like one

of her own. Because Harry was in the Air Force, the family was stationed across America, and JoJo left her mark everywhere she went. JoJo's sisters wanted everyone to know she especially left her mark in Luverne, Alabama, where she lived for 13 months and they miss her so.

JoJo was a self described rebel with a sense of justice and equality. She had a great heart and humorous wit and no challenge was beyond her. She dined and conversed with presidents, Senators, Congressmen as well as the most down-trodden homeless persons. In her youth she traveled America from coast to coast doing odd jobs from singing in country music bands to busing tables and even washing bedpans. She went to finishing school for a time and tried to go to college but she found the world too big a place and there was so much to see and do. She wanted to experience it all. If someone was being oppressed she'd stand up for them. She abhorred racism, sexism, and classism because she believed all Americans were equals and lived and wore that on her sleeves.

JoJo worked for the city of Oceanside Head Start program at Balderama for years as a teacher's aide and cook. She baked many a cookie for many police officers, firemen and other city employees who would drop by to eat. She also worked in Riverside Development Center for handicapped minors as a cook and aide. She was a volunteer at many civic functions over the years behind the scenes. Most recently, with her health deteriorating, she continued helping as she could at the senior bingos for Oceanside and Vista helping to raise funds for the senior nutrition program. She always worked in the background in a variety of small ways, baking, cooking and even just holding hands - so many small things that mean so much.

We know JoJo would want you to help someone in need rather than send flowers. She would want you to set aside some time and do something for someone in need in her name. This would mean so much more to her as a lasting impact on the lives of others. This is the way she lived her life without fanfare or accolades. As she did everywhere she lived like, cooking and delivering meals for the homeless; clothed the needy, gave to repair the nutrition van so they can provide warm meals to seniors. Do this in her memory if you are able to do so. She helped thousands, she and Dad gave up being comfortable as they chose to help others and lived meagerly and chose a different path yet God provided. She set the example for her sons and I hope for you as well.

The last words her son, Jimmy said to her before she left us were "I love you."

We want to thank God we had her as our mother, wife, grandmother, sister and friend.

JoJo was not perfect, but she gave it her best and she was an example of a life well led.

We pray we can life up to her expectations. It will be a different and lesser place without her.

In Loving Memory of Marie Theresa Long 'Terry' St. Teresa

An Amazing Beautiful Mother, Grandmother and Friend

August 19, 1944 - December 6, 2006

God saw you getting tired

And a cure was not to be,

So he put his arms around you,

And whispered

"Come to me."

With tearful eyes we watched you,

And saw you pass away.

Although we loved you dearly

We could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped

beating,

Hard working hands at rest,

God broke our hearts to prove to us

He only takes the best.

She was beautiful and still very young. She worked hard all her life. She loved her family and friends very much and was loved deeply in return by them. She also loved frogs, her birds and cats, Ms. Molly and Ms. Sayde. She was a very loving and giving person who had the greatest smile. She wanted everyone to be happy because she would always say "life is too short."

Her Mass was on Wednesday Dec. 20, 2006, in Escondido at St. Mary Catholic Church. A private family burial at sea is planned.

My mother's request is if anyone wants to send or give anything to please send to: Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.

I love you, mom, and will miss you and your hugs very much.

Love, your daughter, Dawn.

In Memoriams

Shane Tyler Greene

1-21-93 - 1-2-98

How could such a little one

have touched so many hearts?

How could he have gone away

And torn our world apart?

He taught us all new wonders

in little things each day.

How many times he made us smile?

We cannot really say.

His little spirit touched us all,

so innocent and pure.

His zest for life and energy

We never could endure.

For we loved our little Shane

in so very many ways.

And tho we cannot touch him,

Sweet memories forever stay.

And when we go to bed at night

After counting all those sheep

We once again are holding him

And he is fast asleep.

Tracie 1/4/98

Our Angel Shane, we miss you and

love you so much.

You are always and forever

in our hearts and minds.

Love,

Mom, Brett & Tyler
