Great Oak band, guard places second in championships

TEMECULA ---- The Spirit of Great Oak Band and Color Guard earned second place in its division in the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Arizona Fiesta Bowl National Band Parade Championships recently Phoenix. The band was in Arizona participating in several events leading up to the Bowl Championship Series National Championship football game on Jan. 8.

The Spirit Band & Guard, in its third year, also received second place out of all of the divisions for its "General Effect." The rating values the ensembles overall sound and visual impact on the audience.

The school competed in the largest division against band programs from throughout the United States. The 130-member group performed music from the 1970s band Earth, Wind & Fire.

The Great Oak High School Band and Color Guard is under the direction of Jerry Burdick-Rutz.

CLASS NOTES

Proposed materials available for review

TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Valley Unified School District will display supplemental instructional materials for the high school course AP Spanish for the purpose of public review. The materials will be accessible for a two-week period from today until Jan. 26.

Community members are invited to review the books and provide their comments on an form, which will be available at the viewing table. Completed forms will be reviewed as part of the textbook adoption process.

The materials will be on display in the front lobby of the District Administration Center, 31350 Rancho Vista Road. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Open enrollment period nears end in Temecula

TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Valley Unified School District will accept intradistrict transfer requests until Friday. Parents who live within the district's boundaries can request an intradistrict transfer, allowing them to enroll their student in the district school of their choice.

Space availability is the main determining factor. If the number of transfers exceeds the space available at a school, a lottery will be held.

Children currently on an intradistrict transfer will automatically be renewed, unless space availability is an issue. However, parents of promoting fifth- and eighth-graders will need to apply for a new transfer if they would like their child to attend a school outside their school of residence.

Parents can download intradistrict transfer requests at www.tvusd.k12.ca.us/ESS/CWA/forms.htm or pick them up at any school site or the district's Office of Child Welfare & Attendance, 31350 Rancho Vista Road.

SDSU hosts information exchange at Pechanga

TEMECULA ---- Representatives from San Diego State University's College of Extended Studies will be at Pechanga Resort & Casino from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 24 to help attendees learn how they can benefit from continuing education opportunities.

In conjunction with Pechanga, CES is introducing its most comprehensive list of courses ever held in Southwest Riverside County. Courses, typically held in late afternoons, can be applied to certificates in hospitality, wine and casino gaming or students can create a certificate from a cross-section of courses.

Casino Gaming courses at Pechanga will include Surveillance and Security, Feb. 5-26; and Marketing and Promotion in April.

Business of Wine courses include Dynamic Wine and Food Pairing II, Feb. 5-12; and Selling Wine for Managers, April 5-26. Restaurant Management Operations is slated for Feb. 6-27.

Art contest promotes agriculture

In an effort to educate California students about the importance of the state's agricultural industry, California Grown has launched an art contest for students in kindergarten to eighth grade to win the chance to bring gold medal snowboarder and professional skateboarder Shaun White to their school.

Winners will have their artwork featured on a skateboard signed and delivered by White to their classroom. The winner and his or her class will have a meet-and greet session with White before a schoolwide assembly filled with interactive agricultural activities.

Participants must create original artwork for a California Grown-themed skateboard and draft an essay of 100 words or fewer about why they are proud to be California-grown. Submissions will be evaluated most heavily on creativity. Five winners will be selected.

Tours available to middle schoolers

The Corona Student Travel Club was formed to take middle school students on educational tours. It is taking reservations for a nine-day trip to explore the Costa Rican rain forest in June and a 12-day trip to explore medieval cities and landmarks in Southwest France in October that also includes three days in Paris.

Murrieta woman pass bar

MURRIETA ---- Jennifer Monk of Murrieta, a graduate of Pepperdine University School of Law, has been admitted to practice law in the state of California. More than 100 Pepperdine graduates gathered Dec. 1, at the Malibu university, when they were sworn in by Dean Kenneth Starr, a former federal judge.

The three-day General Bar Examination is given in February and July and consists of three sections: a multiple-choice Multistate Bar Examination, six essay questions and two performance tests that are designed to assess the applicant's ability to apply general legal knowledge to practical tasks.

Menifee woman receives honor

MENIFEE ---- Jean Ahn, of Menifee, has received Faculty Honors for the 2006 spring semester at Trinity College.

To earn this honor, a student must achieve a semester grade point average of at least a 3.667 with no individual letter grade below B-minus.

Founded in 1823, Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., is one of the oldest and highest ranked liberal arts colleges in the nation.

Local students makes dean's list

TEMECULA ---- Erienne Gale of Temecula was named to the fall 2006 Dean's List at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I, Gale is pursuing a bachelor's degree in sports/entertainment/event management.

To receive Dean's List commendation, students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 or above.
