SAN DIEGO ---- If the front-office big-shots don't smooch, might the Chargers turn to Mooch?

There was nothing new Tuesday in regards to Marty Schottenheimer coaching general manager A.J. Smith's squad next season. While Schottenheimer is signed, team president Dean Spanos hasn't signed off on Schottenheimer's San Diego employment.

None of the trio were available for comment.

That allows speculation to reign, so what about Steve Mariucci if Schottenheimer is canned? While viable in-house candidates include coordinators Cam Cameron and Wade Phillips, would Mariucci interest Spanos?

Those close to Mariucci, who was fired by the Detroit Lions in 2005, confirm he's interested in coaching again.

It was in San Francisco, not Detroit, where Mariucci built his resume. As coach of the 49ers from 1997-2002, he compiled a 60-43 record, going 3-4 in four playoff appearances. Mariucci was 15-28 with the Lions.

Mariucci is familiar with owner Alex Spanos and his son, Dean. Their association dates to the days when the 49ers held training camp at the University of the Pacific in Stockton; Alex Spanos lives there and contributes heavily to Dean's alma mater.

But flirting with Mariucci and others is premature until Schottenheimer's status is determined.

Despite a franchise-best 14 regular-season wins and two AFC West titles in three years, Schottenheimer is on the hot seat. Sunday's devastating playoff loss to New England sank his postseason mark to 5-13, including 0-2 with the Chargers. Schottenheimer is 47-33 in five regular seasons in San Diego.

If Schottenheimer is out, he might be in at Miami or Pittsburgh, where his 200 regular-season wins look impressive. If so, it lessens the Chargers' financial hit of some $3 million on the final year of Schottenheimer's contract.

In other coaching news, the Dolphins contacted Cameron after the Chargers' postseason pratfall regarding a second interview for their opening.

Also, rookie left tackle Marcus McNeill was added to the Pro Bowl roster, replacing the injured Willie Anderson. McNeill joins nine of his teammates for the Feb. 11 game in Hawaii.

Bosum wrote on Jan 17, 2007 6:53 AM:For the love of God, please don't fire Marty and replace him with another coach who has a losing post-season record. We don't need to enter the realm of 'Yeah, but he is almost .500 in the post season'. If the Chargers are dead-set on canning Marty - they had better get a proven champion as a head coach. FIRE AJ! - there are other salary cap gurus out there.

Tracey wrote on Jan 17, 2007 8:46 AM:Marty should be let go. He just doesn't have "it" in the playoffs.

IF YOU REMEMBER HIM THEN YOU WILL ALSO REMEMBER HOW STUPID FIRINGS AND TRADES HAVE COME BACK TO HAUNT US AND SEND OUR TEAM BACK TO SQUARE 1. LETS SEE, SUNDAY WE GOT BURNED BY A GUY WE LET GO, WE WERE THANKFUL THAT THE OTHER GUYS WE GAVE AWAY(HARRISON,SEAU) WERE NOT IN ATTENDANCE AND DAMN IT OUR QUARTERBACK(BREESE) IS MORE THAN LIKELY GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL. MARTY DID NOT LOSE THAT GAME SUNDAY,OUR PLAYERS DID(NOT KEEPING THIER COOL)BY FORGETING WHAT GOT US THERE. I DONT KNOW MR SMITH BUT I DO KNOW HE HAS MADE BAD CHOICE'S WHEN IT COMES TO OUR TEAM AND IF HE FIRES MARTY OR LETS ANY FREE AGENT GET AWAY THEN I (AND A GREAT MANY OF LOYALIST WILL PROBABLY GO AWAY ALSO) LEARN A LESSON FROM MR SNYDER(REDSKINS) MR SPANOS " THE WAY TO GET A SB RING IS NOT MONEY OR BIG NAMES, BUT THROUGH TRUST,BELIEF,AND MOST IMPORTANT CONTINUITY". TRUST MARTY AND LT AND RIVERS AND....THE TEAM THAT IS 14-3...PLEASE LISTEN TO YOUR HEART AND FANS FOR ONCE INSTEAD OF SOMEONE WITH A GRUDGE AND HUGE EGO........

Edward wrote on Jan 17, 2007 9:36 AM:As a long distance Charger fan from Anchorage AK, I certainly hope Marty is retained. While his post-season record is weak, at least he consistently gets his teams TO the post-season. That's more than can be said for his predecessors in San Diego. As for Mariucci, his coaching record for the last 3 years he coached is abyssmal at 15-28 and HIS playoff record is only 3-4, with a 1 and done after a 12-4 season in SF. Mariucci's supposed to be a step up? I don't think so.

BRIAN wrote on Jan 17, 2007 9:43 AM:Lets look at the big picture....12-4 in 2004 and out the first playoff game. Last year with one the best teams in THE LEAGUE...9-7 and no playoffs, and this year we all know what happened. I don't want my heart broke for the 4th year in a row. His playoff record speaks for itself. Time for a change.

BK wrote on Jan 17, 2007 10:01 AM:If Marty were fired...it would be a step backwards. How can a coach with a 14-2 season be fired?? It wouldn't make sense. And AJ better make sure he signs Donnie Edwards...and not let him get away. We need him on our team. Let him go and HE may come back to haunt us one day...just like someone else we know who did it to us last Sunday.

Bob wrote on Jan 17, 2007 10:03 AM:If the players and fans are behind Marty, then why not keep him and find a new general manager?

Roto Rooter wrote on Jan 17, 2007 10:08 AM:Let me give you one reason the Chargers should and most likely WILL keep Marty Schottenheimer--$$$SHOW ME THE MONEY$$$. Don't expect the Spanos family to screw up a good thing. Players say it all the time, "IT'S A BUSINESS." Well the Chargers appear to be more popular than ever, and that means more dollars for the franchise. The team's popularity won't diminish next season with Marty at the helm. NO in fact, it's a risk to get rid of Marty. The Chargers will be demanding prime time games next season, even with Marty's dismal playoff record lingering. Oh, and why are we still talking about the Chargers? They lost, but we can't stop talking about them. Why? The Chargers need Marty more than ever. He keeps us talking about the Chargers, and the Spanos family must be laughing all the way to the bank. Oh, and let's not forget about that $3 million the Chargers have to flush down the drain to release Marty from his contract.

BOLTZMAN wrote on Jan 17, 2007 10:20 AM: I agree fire A.J. and bring in Parcels to over-see evrything, leaving our coaches, and team in-tact....Unless someone like Jimmie Johnson will come and coach, you have to stick with shotty.

J.J. wrote on Jan 17, 2007 10:42 AM:Please don't bother replaceing Marty with any less of a coach than Jimmy Johnson.

Roto Rooter wrote on Jan 17, 2007 10:44 AM:Players say it all the time, "It's a business." The Chargers make money with Marty at the helm, even with his dismal playoff record, and they'll continue to do so next year. The team will demand prime time games next season, and continue to make MORE MONEY next year because the team is more popular than ever. If I'm not mistaken, the Spanos family likes money too. That means it's probably a risk to get rid of Marty now, while the franchise is quite profitable. Oh, and I'm sure the Spanos family can live with themselves when Chargers fans complain about broken hearts. That means the fans care, and they're going to care again next season with their pocket books. Oh, and let's not forget the $3 million the Spanos family has to flush down the drain to release Marty from his contract. Marty is the Chargers' tidy bowl man. He gives us a franchise we feel confortable pooping on.

Larry wrote on Jan 17, 2007 11:08 AM:Fire AJ? You people are just plain nuts or maybe Raider fans. Who put this team together? Who is responsible for a team that may say is 'the most talented' in the NFL? Whether the decision to retain and let go Marty, should be made on one question " Do you really believe the Chargers can win a Super Bowl with him as Head Coach?" Period. I believe AJ doesn't care about anything other than winning, whether he cares about having a golf partner in Marty or an 'arms length' relationship - all he wants is to get the Chargers to the SB and win it. Firing AJ because he is doesn't talk to the press or seems to be surly is really moronic. Maybe you want Beathard back? Talk about Village Idiots.

J D wrote on Jan 17, 2007 11:15 AM:You got to let Marty go and sign Bill Cowher, that'll get the job done in San Diego. Thank you Marty for the best season record this year but you did'nt finish. Talk about that stupid challenge he called that costed us that time-out. If we keep Marty he'll only bring us good season games and a disapppointing playoffs. BILL COWHER coached a star rb and qb in Jerome Bettis and Big Ben, why not come to San Diego and bring his legacy and coach LT and RIVERS.

Jim wrote on Jan 17, 2007 11:20 AM:Keep Marty. Winning in the NFL is very tough. Marty is a winner. He did not cost us that playoff game. It was not perfectly coached but that did not cost us the game. Marty has turned this team into one of the few elite teams in the NFL. We will get there if we keep Marty. Let him go and it is a step back.

Doug G wrote on Jan 17, 2007 11:28 AM:i agree with every one saying don't fire marty. he has changed already because have we seen marty ball . it is dead and with sundays playoff lost it was not him who dropped easy passes it was not him fumbling the ball it was the players. and if marty goes the bond the players and the coach have will be gone and then a new coach comes in then we will have to start all over and there goes our playoffs next year. i think we should keep him and see how it goes next year and i beat you all that the chargers will bein the big show . just because the coach"marty" and HIS team will have somthing to prove. the team and Marty are to hungray now to not make it next year. TO ALL TRUE CHARGER FANS KEEP THE FAITH AND BELIEVE IN MARTY. MARTY BALL IS DEAD AND THE NEW MARTY HAS A 14-2 RECORD THIS YEAR NEXT YEAR WILL BE ONLY BETTER. MARTY TOOK A 4-12 TEAM AND GAVE THEM HOPE SO LETS NOT NOCK MARTY BE A TRUE FAN AND KEEP THE FAITH.

Kevin wrote on Jan 17, 2007 11:41 AM:Fire AJ... He is the problem. And as far as Marty. Let him go. His burned out. Bring in new blood, like bill Parcels to over see evrything.

Beautiful Brute wrote on Jan 17, 2007 11:47 AM:So long as the Chargers get to the playoffs, they have a chance to win. Getting to the playoffs regularly and losing is preferable to not gettting there at all. With Marty at the helm, getting to the playoffs is, especially with this team, likely. Those who remember the Coryell era recall lots of playoff trips and few wins but was there a more fun time to be a Chargers fan? Ok, maybe the Ross era but it didn't last long since Spanos sided with Beathard and let Ross go. We all know what happened after that...laughing stock of the league and didn't sniff the playoffs again until Marty came along. Who wants that to happen again? Not me. Keep Marty and enjoy the ride because eventually, even a blind squirrel will find the nut.

J D wrote on Jan 17, 2007 11:52 AM:Take another listen to what we are trying to say Doug G. Marty led CLEVELAND and KC to the PLAYOFFS and FAILED. He brought the same thing to San Diego, what more can you say this coach can't cut it in the playoffs. If you say it's the players fault not the coaches that contradicts what you say, it is on both parties to contribute great play calling and finishing the play. Yea you can't blame it all on Marty but you know he got to exited in the playoffs and screwed up a timeout for us which could of got us a little bit closer to that field goal. Keep everyone on the roster and hire BILL COWHER

Elliot wrote on Jan 17, 2007 12:15 PM:Is it Marty's fault that a stupid player head butts a Patriot on a failed 4th down play that would have given the ball to the Chargers and effectively ended the game? NO!! Is it Marty's fault that a stupid player muffs a punt and tries to pick it up rather than falling on it and effectively ending the game? NO!! Is it Marty's fault that a stupid player intercepts a pass (that would have effectively ended the game) and then fumbles it back giving the Patriots a first down? NO!! SO THEN WHY FIRE THE COACH How many other teams were 14-2? Oh yeah, NONE!! If the GM and the coach don't get along, get a new GM

DAVID wrote on Jan 17, 2007 12:24 PM:Give Marty another year.Mariucci can not coach he prove that with the 49ers and detroit lions this guy is a fake.these guys like Mariucci.and that coach with tampa bay.come in after these guys then built the the team up.to try and take credit like they then dons something.pete carrol can not coach in the pros.they are going to make a big mistake.

The Chicago Charger Fan wrote on Jan 17, 2007 12:25 PM:I'm for replacing Marty with a Ditka or Johnson type coach--not a Mooch. If a proven Super Bowl winner can't be hired then stick with Marty. Whats one more year to this young rascally bunch. Nonetheles, how this team challenges calls should be seriously worked out in the off season. The Chargers should probably move Jammer to the safty position and seriously seek a shut down corner--start Cromartie--Move Florence to nikle or dime back--and hello, start Floyed and Jackson, use Osgood more and Parker as a specialist and third down reciever. Lastly... the whole team should learn to shut that mouth and let ONLY their play do their Talking! Their talking causes them to lose focus. New model to follow, "Shut Up and INSTEAD Put Up!!!!"

Bosum to Larry wrote on Jan 17, 2007 12:39 PM:John Butler built this team. AJ has only maintained the formula Butler initiated. You think AJ is the only guy that can make the kind of picks we have had? Get real. You think there are other GMs (I like where your head is Boltzman!) wouldn't be able to put aside their own egos and get along with the head coach and make compromises with key playmakers/leaders (like Donnie Edwards, Junior Seau, Rodney Harrison, Drew Brees..and now..my God...Reche Caldwell)? AJ has proven his own ego is worth more to him than retaining proven winners. The coach works with the personnel the GM allows to be on the team. AJ needs to understand his job stops once the player signs on the dotted line.

Esther wrote on Jan 17, 2007 12:55 PM:I am a Chargers fan of 39 years who lives in Virgina. I saw Schottenheimer fired by Snyder after winning 8 games his only year here. Hope the Chargers do not fired him but give him a chance to go all the way next year. He didn't lose the game, his players did. This man is a winner. I cried Sinday when the no class Patriots won, but there is next year!

Northernmost Bolthead wrote on Jan 17, 2007 2:31 PM:Fire Marty? I think he does wind up his players too much: that's why half a dozen of them made bonehead plays you never saw in the regular season. But remember this: you know we would have won that game with Drew Brees. I wonder what the A. in A.J. Smith stands for...

Kevin wrote on Jan 17, 2007 8:23 PM:The best thing that could happen for this team is to keep Marty for the simple reason look at his record its only a matter of time he goes all the way and it happens in 2007 look at the team that surrounds him and the team he lost to and the plays that caused it to happen. You want to fire someone get rid of AJ Smith FIRE AJ FIRE AJ FIRE AJ FIRE AJ FIRE AJ
