Michael Calvert

Michael B. Calvert, 59, died suddenly Wednesday, January 3, 2007, from a brain aneurysm. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Sue Calvert; his brother, Rod Calvert; two daughters, Stephanie Calvert of Secaucus, N.J., and Stacey Nix of Memphis, Tenn.; and three grandchildren, Savannah Calvert, Carson Nix and Andie Nix.

Mike was born February 24, 1947, in Blytheville, Ark., to Burl and Woody Calvert. In 1966, Mike joined the Navy, and was a dog handler while stationed in Vietnam. After he left the service, he attended Arkansas State and Memphis State, where he studied computer programming. He worked in that field for over 25 years. Since living in Oceanside, he worked for Kelco and Heating & Cooling Supply.

Mike and Sue met in Sacramento and were married in October 1988, at the Ponderosa Ranch in Nevada. They lived in Charlotte, N.C., for three years, and relocated to Oceanside in 1992. They shared almost all aspects of their lives together, and their favorite pastime was spending time with each other.

Mike loved riding his Harley, especially with Sue as the passenger. They have been members of Oceanside and Biggs Harley Group for the past 10 years. Besides riding, one of Mike's favorite motorcycle events was the Heart Ride, a motorcycle ride that helped to benefit several charities. He volunteered at this ride every year since it started in 1999.

Mike loved animals, and helped with both Greyhound and Golden Retriever Rescue. Mike and Sue fostered dogs for both groups, giving the dogs a loving foster home until a permanent family was found. Mike was always willing to pick up a dog from the shelter, transport it to a vet, and give it some extra love.

For the past 10 years, Mike and Sue have been involved with raising puppies to become service dogs (to help those people with disabilities become more independent). They have raised 12 dogs for several programs, and Mike always enjoyed talking to people about the difference that the dogs would make in a person's life. He was proud to be associated with such a special cause.

Mike also loved sports. He enjoyed watching college basketball, and attending the sweet sixteen and final four games. His favorite sports were NASCAR racing and pro football, and he was a loyal San Diego Chargers fan. Mike and Sue had season tickets for the Chargers the first year they moved to Oceanside (that was their yearly Christmas present). When California Speedway opened up, they had those season tickets as their yearly birthday presents. Mike was a true fan, through the good and the bad, and supported his drivers and team no matter what the outcome was.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 20, at 1 p.m. at the cemetery at the Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside. A celebration of life will be held afterward at South Oceanside Elementary School.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Mike's name to your favorite charity. Some of Mike#'s favorites were Canine Companions for Independence, P.O. Box 4568, Oceanside, CA 92052, Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, 825 College Blvd, Suite 102, PMB 609, Oceanside, CA 92057; the American Heart Association, and any greyhound or golden retriever rescue group.
