CARLSBAD -- The Experimental Aircraft Association, North County Chapter 286, will meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 in the AFR Hangar at McClellan-Palomar Airport, 2481 Palomar Airport Road.

The guest speaker will be Bob MacHale, air traffic manager at the Ramona Air Traffic Control Tower. MacHale retired from the U.S. Navy where he served as an air controller in the Air Traffic Control Centers on the aircraft carriers Kitty Hawk and Stennis.

Republican Club to meet Thursday

OCEANSIDE -- The Republican Club of North County will hold a dinner meeting tonight at El Camino Country Club, 3202 Vista Way. A no-host happy hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by the meeting at 6.

The guest speaker will be Don Griffin, chief patrol agent for the San Diego Border Patrol.

Cat show on tap this weekend

DEL MAR -- The San Diego Cat Fanciers Association will present "Food and Water Bowl XV" all-breed cat show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 27 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 28 in Exhibit Hall at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd.

Hundreds of felines representing up to 41 breeds will compete for top honors. In addition to the competition, the Super Bowl-themed event will include educational presentations, show tours, rescue cat adoptions and specialty cat merchandise available for sale. There also will be a feline agility competition, which is open to all cats.

San Dieguito River Park offers hikes

  • "Hike With Hounds," 9 to 10:30 a.m. Jan. 27. Join San Dieguito River Park trail patrollers Jan Hughes and Sue Munz on a hike to Felicita Creek along the North Shore Trail. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed. Bring water for yourself and your dog. From Interstate 15, exit Via Rancho Parkway in Escondido and head east; turn right on Sunset Drive; park at the end of the road.

  • "You and I and the Kumeyaay," 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 3 at the Bernardo Bay Natural Area for the Piedras Pintadas Trail. Hike with Westley Lagerberg and Sam Sugarman and learn about the flora, fauna, plants, habitat, birds and lore of the area. From Interstate 15, exit at Rancho Bernardo Road and go west; turn right onto West Bernardo Drive; continue past Rancho Bernardo Community Park to the Bernardo Bay staging area on left; park in dirt lot.

    Study abroad in Spain through Palomar College

    SAN MARCOS -- Palomar College will offer a summer study abroad program in Spain from May 19 through June 16.

    Students can enjoy exciting excursions to the United Nations World Heritage cities of Toledo, Granada and Cordoba and learn Spanish while living with a Spanish host family for two weeks in Madrid and two weeks on the southern coast of Spain in El Puerto de Santa Maria. Students can earn up to eight transfer units of credit in Spanish from the college.

    Informational meetings will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 27 and Feb. 3 and 17 in Room F-10 on the San Marcos campus, 1140 W. Mission Road. Information about the program, travel arrangements and registration will be presented. A group air flight to Spain will be available.

    League for Peace & Freedom to meet

  • 8:30 a.m. Jan. 27, San Pasqual Valley Agricultural Trail, Escondido. The group hopes to see resident birds such as the cactus wren, greater roadrunner, phainopepla and a few raptors. Moderate walking conditions.

  • 8:30 a.m. Feb. 3, Dos Picos County Park, Ramona. A variety of oak woodland species and local resident birds are expected to be seen. Easy walking conditions.

  • 9 a.m. Feb. 18, Wildlife Research Institute Hawk Watch, Ramona. The group will look for raptors, including the red-tailed and ferruginous hawks, golden eagles and burrowing owls. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars and scopes. Easy walking conditions.

    Ostomy support group to meet

    OCEANSIDE -- The Ostomy Support Group of North San Diego County will meet at 1 p.m. Jan. 29 in Assembly Room 1 at Tri-City Medical Center, 4002 Vista Way.

    Elaine McLevie, a world-traveler "colostomate," will share her experiences traveling with an ostomy.

    Herding dog event set for Feb. 3

    Norwegian pianist to perform in Vista

    VISTA -- Sons of Norway will host professional pianist Knut Erik Jensen, on tour from Selbu, Norway, at 3 p.m. Feb. 10 at Faith Lutheran Church, 700 E. Bobier Drive.

    Jensen will perform the music of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Following the concert, Jensen will be the honored guest at an authentic Norwegian salmon dinner, served with cucumber salad, green beans, red potatoes, wine, krumkaker and coffee. The dinner will be held at the Sons of Norway Hall, 2006 E. Vista Way.

    Event to benefit young tsunami victims

    NORTH COUNTY -- Toys for Thailand is a volunteer, grassroots team of Palomar College associates and community members who collect toys and monetary donations for tsunami-zone and abandoned children in Thailand.

    The group will make its third trip in as many years to Thailand in May and, in preparation, will host a fundraiser called "A Taste of Thailand" from 6 to 10 p.m. Feb. 10 at Seaside Church in Encinitas. The event will feature Thai dishes from various Thai chefs in North County, Thai music and dance, Thai foot massage, fortune telling, a silent auction and a raffle.

    The highlight of the event will be a special appearance by world-famous Thai chef Tommy Tang, who will sign copies of his best-selling cookbook, "Modern Thai Cuisine," and his most recent book, "Noodles and Rice and Something Nice." Ten percent of the cookbook sales will be donated to the Palomar College Foundation -- Toys for Thailand. For information about Tang, go to http://www.letsgetcooking.org.

    San Diego Junior Miss contestants sought

    SAN DIEGO -- Well-rounded girls who are juniors in high school are invited to participate in the San Diego Junior Miss Scholarship Program.

    The program is part of the nationwide America's Junior Miss program, which awards college scholarships for young women's achievements. Judging is based on scholastics, a personal interview, public speaking, a group fitness routine and a talent presentation.

    The program consists of seven Saturday rehearsals that will begin Feb. 10 and culminate in an April 1 show at the University of San Diego.

    Five $1,000 scholarships will be awarded and the winners will advance to the state level, all expenses paid, and compete for more than $35,000 in cash scholarships. An orientation is planned for Feb. 3 at the Tierrasanta Recreation Center.

    Participants must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of San Diego County. There is no fee to enter the program.

    Single seniors club invites new members

    NORTH COUNTY -- The North County Singles Club for seniors ages 55 and older is seeking new members. The club's main activities involve dancing, however, other events such as potlucks offer opportunities for friendship, camaraderie and socialization.

    Members meet for dinner and dancing Friday evenings at the Vista Elks Lodge, 1947 E. Vista Way. Cost is $13.

    The group will hold a special Mardi Gras dinner-dance with music by Billy Harper's band from 5 to 9 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Escondido Country Club, 1800 Country Club Lane. Cost is $23.
