Chargers' Manusky to talk with 49ers

SAN DIEGO ---- The Chargers' coaching staff could take another hit.

The San Francisco 49ers, according to team sources, have received permission to interview linebackers coach Greg Manusky for their defensive coordinator vacancy.

Coach Marty Schottenheimer's future is already in doubt following next season after he declined a contract extension. Earlier this month, Schottenheimer lost offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, who became the Miami Dolphins' head coach.

Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips recently met with the Dallas Cowboys and is considered a strong candidate.

With Clarence Shelmon being promoted to replace Cameron, the team is seeking a running backs coach.

Manusky, an NFL linebacker for 12 seasons, has coached the Chargers' linebackers since 2002.

The linebacking position could also be in flux next season. Donnie Edwards, the team's leading tackler the past five years, becomes a free agent and isn't expected to return, and Randall Godfrey is contemplating retirement.

I remember the past defensive scheeme(before Wade)it wasn't very good. Why must the chargers grant permission to every team that wants to cherry pick our assistants?

For ex, Manusky is going from LB coach & interviewing for the D-Coordinator job... an obvious step up in the world. Interviews on a persmissive basis only come into play if its a lateral move, say from LB coach to DL coach or something. Bottom line, we'll hire coaches to coach the schemes we have in place, thats why we promoted Sheldon to OC instead of looking outside. Players make plays, the coaches didnt cost us any games this year, I dont care how anyone feels about MartyBall, thats the bottom line.
