Ramona boy dies of rare infection

RAMONA ---- A critically ill Ramona boy who suffered a deadly bacterial infection died Sunday at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, a San Diego County medical examiner's investigator said today.
Carlos Don, a 12-year-old sixth-grader at Hanson Lane Elementary School, was diagnosed last month with methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, a skin infection that spreads to the respiratory system.
Carlos was one of 200 students from Hanson and James Dukes elementary schools who attended Camp Cuyamaca the week of Jan. 15, authorities said.
The family said when Carlos returned home Jan. 19 he felt seriously ill with shortness of breath, and he was later rushed to the hospital. Blood drives were held to help him get the O-positive blood Carlos needed as he struggled for life.
The healthy, popular boy who played Pop Warner football, loved to skateboard and was an all-round athlete died at 2:40 a.m. Sunday at the hospital, the medical examiner's investigator said.

Not as rare as described! wrote on Feb 5, 2007 4:50 PM:I don't believe this disease is as rare as they report! From what I understand, I don't think this is a reportable illness thus no one really knows how many people contract it. My brother had this and while he was standing in line for medication at Kaiser, he met 4 other people with the same infection. All of their infections were originally diagnosed as SPIDER bites so please beware of a doctor telling you your infection looks like a spider bite!! My brother's was first under his arm and did not respond to antibiotics. It then popped up on his knee and it was EXTREMELY painful and took him a few weeks to recover while taking Sulfa drugs. So please keep an eye on any infections. If you participate in contact sports, it is mandatory that you wash with soap and water afterwards because athletes are very susceptible to this infection because of close contact. I am very sorry for this families loss!! Carlos looked like a great little guy!!

Pop Warner Coach wrote on Feb 5, 2007 5:40 PM:First of all; I just wanted to send the condolences to the family. It is a very sad moment for all involved in Pop Warner football and for all parents raising a child. They say the hardest part about parenthood is losing a child. As 'not as rare as described' indicated, the infection is not so rare at all. My one year old daughter contracted what appeared to be a pimple. It eventually took on the characteristic of a boil. We monitored it through the night and took her back in the next day as the redness began to spread towards her hip. The doctors at Kaiser immediately admitted her to the hospital and after antibiotics and a surgery she beat the infection. The surgeons at childrens hospital indicated that this infection was becoming more and more prominent. It is a Staphylococcus strain that is resistant to antibiotics. The key to this is catching it in time. Do not wait more than a day with this. If you see any symptoms of what I have described act immediately. The bumps will appear in areas susceptible to sweat. i.e., underarms, close to genitals, behind the knee. RIP Carlos Don.

Barbara in Friday Harbor wrote on Feb 8, 2007 7:23 PM:Your family is being prayed for all over the world. I must relate to you about this bacteria that is in the community now, not just in hospitals, because we have strengthened it with the sometimes fruitless use of antibiotics. I include this link with the hope that with awareness perhaps people will pressure the FDA to change their course. Bacteriophage therapy is older than antibiotics, has been behind the iron curtain for decades, but is the only hope to fight this horrible, growing problem. Google "Phage Therapy" or go to ... for answers. You are not alone in your deep sorrow, dear friends.
