Bilbray to chair immigration reform caucus

NORTH COUNTY -- U.S. Rep. Brian Bilbray has been named chairman of the Immigration Reform Caucus, a group that is dominated by Republican members of Congress.

The 91-member organization lobbies Congress for changes to the nation's immigration policies and was formed in 1999 by a conservative congressman and illegal immigration opponent, Tom Tancredo, R-Colo.

Congressional caucuses are made up of members of Congress who share common legislative objectives. The rules of the U.S. House of Representatives govern their actions.

Bilbray, R-Solana Beach, who is succeeding Tancredo as chairman, said in a Tuesday news release: "I hope to expand the Immigration Reform Caucus to include lawmakers from both parties who share our commitment to address illegal immigration in America," Bilbray stated.

Concerned wrote on Feb 7, 2007 8:23 AM:This should be interesting. Hopefully, they can achieve some reform without giving away the (ammnesty) farm. Most likely it will be an act of polarization and nothing will get accomplished. But then, the glass is half full (I think...).

RAY wrote on Feb 7, 2007 8:25 AM:Great Mr. Bilbray use Immigration as a stepping stone like your comrades to fool all you supporters. You guys really know how to work your people.

Mary wrote on Feb 7, 2007 8:30 AM:Oh please..remember, Bilbray claimed to have been working on the illegal immigration for 25 years during election campaign. He and Hunter (and Issa) can't get anything passed-they are in the minority! Too late!

Rita wrote on Feb 7, 2007 8:39 AM:Thank goodness Brian is put i charge of this! I helped him in his election because he has the will to speak for the people.

Rita wrote on Feb 7, 2007 8:41 AM:Please speak for the American taxpayer and CITIZENS on this issue. We are not the minority like the DC politians say we are! Go Brian!

Karen wrote on Feb 7, 2007 8:47 AM:This is great news. Bilbray was elected because of his position on this issue, and I support him wholeheartedly! Time to confront the corporate greed that attracts illegals to this country. Its time to crack down on the employers!

bryan wrote on Feb 7, 2007 8:56 AM:way to go bilbray, help us stop the illegal invasion. You are our savior.

From Democrat-Robert wrote on Feb 7, 2007 9:22 AM:To Rep Bilbray .. Please know that the vast majority of Americans are behind you and your efforts to secure our borders. We all understand the daunting task before you being in the minority party but we all know where your loyalty lies on this most important of issues facing our county and country. Best of Luck Brian!!

Grass Root Suport wrote on Feb 7, 2007 9:46 AM:Maybe the Immigration Reform Caucus should take a page from Hillary's playbook and ask the American people how they think immigration laws should be reformed. Hillary used the wildly popular Yahoo Answers to ask how people thought health care in America should be reformed. At last count, she received nearly 40000 answers. Certainly her aides will be reading them for months and compiling a consensus of opinion. Bilbray could do the same, it is free to post a question on Yahoo, he will elicit a myriad of opinions and he will have a great barometer of what the majority of Americans feel would be acceptable solutions. Viola, support from the grass roots, end of discussion among Washington elites who are sooo out of touch with most Americans!

Pat wrote on Feb 7, 2007 10:09 AM:Brain Bilray is a voice of the people. How refreshing. He is also working on the release/pardon of border potrol agents Compean and Ramos. Sadly Agent Ramos was put in with the general prison population and beaten severly several days ago by illegal immigrants, who tried to kill him when they found out who he was. You won't see that story in our paper.

American woman wrote on Feb 7, 2007 1:26 PM:...couldn't have come up with a better replacement for Tom Tancredo than Brian Bilbray. This is the best news America has had in a long, long time! Now, "maybe" Tom will honor us by becoming our next President? It's a fair guess to suppose that Congressman Tancredo is going to throw his (good-guy) hat into the ring! I'm there! Let's see that Tancredo runs and wins! Also. let's all assure Brian that we are 100%+ behind him as he takes over for Tom! Yikes! This is just too good to be true!

Didn't vote for Bilbray wrote on Feb 7, 2007 1:45 PM:About the "R-Solana Beach" designation...his District Office recently moved from Escondido to Solana Beach. I guess he is more interested in being around money (and closer to his South Bay home) than in being near constituents who are too poor to hire attorneys.

Patriot wrote on Feb 7, 2007 3:15 PM:We need someone like Bilbray to stand up to Bush and the open borders crowd who want to sacrifice America's middle class jobs, borders, language, culture, public schools, health care, and social security system by importing cheap illegal labor to boost corporate bottom lines. Hopefully Tancredo is giving up his position to campaign for President.

Russell wrote on Feb 7, 2007 6:58 PM:It doesn't matter anymore who heads the IRC. When they were in the majority all they have accomplished was political posturing to preserved conservative votes which backfired. The american people spoke last election NO MORE SELF PRESERVATION ACT TO TO REFORM THE IMMIGRATION LAW. That's what we need be realistic and give comprehensive solution to this crisis!!!

anotherview wrote on Feb 7, 2007 8:18 PM:America can free itself of illegal aliens. Grassroots support can help, but the effective action must come from the top, from the U. S. Congress and the President acting together to rid America of illegal aliens. Stop employers from hiring illegal aliens and say no to amnesty for illegal aliens. Under the National ID Act, mandate that employers require workers and job applicants to show their national ID to prove a right to work. Enforce other existing means to stop employers from hiring illegal aliens. Every other modern country, including Mexico, controls who works and lives within the country. America must follow suit. Without the prospect of either a job or an amnesty, the illegal aliens would tend to self-deport, and the foreign nationals would tend not to migrate illegally to America. In turn, America would likely then not need to build an expensive wall along the U. S.-Mexico border to prevent illegal aliens from using that crossing point. Mexico may cry foul, but then Mexico should answer first why it fails to spend its national revenue from oil exports and tourism in a rational manner to improve the conditions of its own citizens, allowing these people to stay in their own country, as they expressly wish to do. Employers may cry labor shortage without the availability of illegal alien workers, but these employers will adjust -- by mechanizing and introducing efficiencies, and also by raising wages, increasing benefits, and improving working conditions in order to attract Americans to do the jobs that illegal alien workers now do. Let us make clear as well that America has no obligation to provide jobs or housing to illegal aliens. These two responsibilities rest with the home countries of the illegal aliens. Additionally, America can cleanse itself of criminal illegal aliens. This cleansing to some extent will result from fewer illegal aliens residing in and migrating to America. A federal program under the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has begun a national sweep for criminal illegal aliens, finding these foreigner criminals in jails, prisons, and on the street, and then deporting them. But at its current pace, this national sweep will take decades to cleanse America of criminal illegal aliens. The U. S. Congress must expand this program to cleanse America of criminal illegal aliens by matching the program to the problem. American already has enough criminals. With fewer illegal aliens in America, the host of negative social, economic, and political impacts fostered by the presence of illegal aliens will moderate. The vast sums of money local, state, and federal budgets now expend on illegal aliens could then go to meet the needs of citizens. America can get along fine with illegal aliens, and will prosper all the more.

anotherview wrote on Feb 7, 2007 10:32 PM:Excuse me, dear reader, but the last line of my previous comment should have read: "America can get along fine without illegal aliens, and will prosper all the more."

concerned wrote on Feb 8, 2007 1:45 AM:We'll see how Bilbray does. I am not optimistic. As anotherview states, the solution is enforcement of existing laws, not a higher (or longer) fence. If we made employers accountable ---huge fines and jail time-- and enforced those laws, the problem would be solved. The problem is, a huge segment of our economy is dependent upon illegal/cheap labor. This is why President Bush is advocating amnesty. As long as they are willing to work in sub-par conditions, for sub-par wages, they hurt the middle class and working poor and help to further line the pockets of the wealthy.

Pedro wrote on Feb 9, 2007 6:57 AM:Most of us Hispanic U.S. citizens recognize the need to secure the border and stop illegal immigration. Bilbray, you have big shoes to fill.
