MEXICO CITY -- A California couple has been arrested in Mexico and accused of illegally taking a 2-week-old baby, the Televisa network reported Thursday.
Local authorities told the network that the couple presented false papers for the baby, then told officials that a poor mother gave them the child because she couldn't afford to care for him.
The couple, both of whom carried California driver's licenses, were being held at a local jail, and face charges of trying to buy or rob a child.
The woman told the network that she had always dreamed of being a mother.
"For 10 years, I've tried to have children," she said.
But she admitted in a jailhouse interview that the adoption did not meet local regulations.
"Unfortunately, I did things in a way that wasn't totally legal," she said, without giving details.
Her husband said he took full responsibility for what happened, and that his wife was not involved.
The U.S. Embassy did not immediately have information on the case.
