'Fight club' gang broken up
By: JOHN HALL - Staff Writer | ∞
MURRIETA ---- Authorities say they have "dismantled" what they are calling a criminal street gang consisting mostly of former Murrieta Valley High School football players who started their own fight club, then began committing violent crimes, including armed robbery.
On Thursday, gang task force members arrested nine people ---- including one juvenile ---- in connection with a six-month investigation, authorities said. At least three more are still being sought by police.
One of the three is being called a fugitive by authorities who are seeking the public's help in finding him. Anthony Craig Smith, 19, of Murrieta, is wanted for a variety of charges, including burglary, vehicle theft and assault, authorities said.
Anyone with information about Smith's whereabouts is asked to call the Murrieta-Temecula Regional Gang Task Force at (951) 461-6351.
"This wasn't the typical gang you think of, like the turf-based gangs we often see," said Murrieta police Lt. Dennis Vrooman.
This one, police say, started in about 2004 with some Murrieta Valley High students who, Vrooman said, "were abusing illegal anabolic steroids."
"Then, for thrills, they'd spar against each other, patterning themselves after the movie 'Fight Club,'" he added.
They would hold matches at local parks where they would fight as crowds would gather to watch, authorities said.
"They became bored fighting each other, so they started going to parties in the area and challenging other people to fight," said Tim Hales, special agent supervisor with the state Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement and head of the gang task force.
If fight club members believed someone was "disrespecting their gang," Hales said, they'd beat that person up.
"Often, one guy would confront someone at a party for supposedly disrespecting them, then another guy would come up behind the unsuspecting victim and sucker punch them," Hales said.
"The victim would just wake up in the hospital because they'd been beaten up so badly," he said.
It wasn't just young men they'd beat up, Hales said, as some young women were also assaulted.
Fight club members created dog tags and ball caps bearing the initials "FC," Hales said.
What started as fights at parties progressed to burglary, authorities said.
While at some of these parties, fight club members would case the home, coming back later and burglarizing the place, sometimes stealing weapons, he added. Local businesses were also burglarized, Hales said.
That, in turn, led to another progression as the guns stolen in burglaries were used to commit armed robberies, authorities said.
Hales said investigators believe nearly a half-dozen robberies of local businesses can be attributed to the group. No shots were fired during any of the robberies, he said.
All told, Hales estimates at least 20 crimes can be connected to the group.
Thursday's sweep stemmed from warrants issued for the arrests of those involved.
"This was important because we took a violent street gang, dismantled them and took them off the streets," Vrooman said. "This sends a message that this type of activity won't be tolerated in this valley."
Hales called this the first phase of arrests, saying there may be more in the future.
"All of these guys are facing some serious time" in custody, Hales said.
Five of the eight adults arrested face allegations of participating in a criminal street gang, which, Hales said, could result in life sentences.
Vrooman identified the arrested as Christopher David Owen Bredesen, 18, of Murrieta; Gilberto Cuevas, 18, of Murrieta; Simon Lyle Johnson, 20, of Murrieta; Nathan Martinez, 21, of La Habra; Michael Robert Petty, 20, of Murrieta; William "B.J." Unmacht IV, 21, of Murrieta; Martin Arturo Valle, 21, of Murrieta; and Travis Brenn Baker, 20, of Winchester.
The name of the 17-year-old Murrieta boy was not released because of his age.
The gang task force, based at the Murrieta Police Station, includes investigators from the Murrieta Police Department, state Department of Justice, Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement, Riverside County district attorney's office, Riverside County Sheriff's Department, county probation office, state parole, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Rill Talk wrote on Feb 16, 2007 2:37 PM:First off, none of you people know any of these young men, and for the ignorant person who assumed that because they are from the suburbs, they MUST be white, you are sadly mistaken. For whoever said “we all knew these kids in high school”, again, sadly mistaken. Attending school with someone and hearing stories about them hardly qualifies for “knowing” that person. These are kids I grew up with, and let me say that I have never once heard any of them refer to themselves as a "gang". They are a diverse (black, white, and brown) group of friends, nothing more. So a few of them happened to commit some crimes, this does not in any way provide justifiable cause to call them a gang just because they hang out and know each other. What started off as a joke and a nickname for a bunch of friends, has been twisted by the media (thanks to ever so fair and unbiased MVPD, gosh, I love you guys) to label these kids as "gang bangers". None of them would call themselves a gang member, and to judge someone without knowing them and to believe everything that is printed is to be the epitome of ignorant and uneducated (despite wherever you got your "degree" from). Also, what the civil servants and media fail to note, is that most of the fights that these young men got into at parties, were because some smart mouthed kid would drop the “n” word and get racial. That constitutes a beating if you ask me. Let me remind you, that this group was multi-ethnic, meaning that they all viewed each other (and everyone for that matter) as people and not as the Mexican kid, or the Black kid or the White kid. When a white or brown kid stands up for his black friend and gets in a fight because his black friend was called a “n-----”, he should be called a egalitarian, not a gang banger. I say this because the fact that these kids are getting gang enhanced charges is preposterous. The MVPD is in every way making sure that the lives of these kids are ruined completely, and that they serve more time than the common sentence for the crimes committed allows. This is not only unfair and absurd, but it is evidence that the law enforcement is god in this land (metaphor, people). They can ultimately decide what happens to a person’s future. I read comments on this page stating “go to L.A., those are real gangs” or “there are no such things as “suburban gangs”. Don’t you people realize that the MVPD knows this too? The MVPD completely understands that this group of young men is not a “gang”, they are simply calling them one to make sure they serve more time. Trust, if this group of kids were from an urban area or inner city, the law enforcement would laugh at the thought of them being a gang. I am not arguing that these individuals are angels, but I am arguing that they should be treated fairly in the court of law, and with the charges at hand (as well as my own experiences with the MVPD and the court system), I feel confident in saying that “innocent until proven guilty” is a fairy tale that should be revised to “guilty until proven innocent”.

The Murrieta-Temecula Regional GANG Task Force knows the legal parameters of what constitutes a gang, and some of these "nice" boys qualify as gang members, some as gang associates, and some won't have any gang-related charges. I'm sure the people who claim to know the kids and their families are shocked at the charges, but I hope they realize that criminals have their "upstanding citizen" faces they put on so outsiders don't know what they and their criminal associates are doing. I know members of the gang task force that investigated these kids and their crimes; they did an excellent job and should be thanked for it. Trust me, if you knew exactly what these suspects are accused of doing (rather than the short descriptions such as burglary, assault, etc.), you would be thankful that you were not one of their many victims and grateful that we have law enforcement officers working 24/7 to keep our streets and our families safer. And to "Rill Talk" (whose comments show an incredible bias against law enforcement)...I agree with you that law enforcement and the courts "can ultimately decide what happens to a person’s future", but only in the sense that they decide what charges to pursue and eventually what sentence a person receives. However, they only have a say in your future if you've broken the law. You decide whether to follow society's laws or not, so ultimately, the only one RESPONSIBLE for your future is YOU!!

Lets get real wrote on Jun 10, 2007 12:24 PM:If these individuals committed assault, burglary, vandalism, and ARMED robbery and 20 crimes can be connected to members of this "group", well then, I'm sorry to all those who feel differently, but they can be considered a "gang". A gang is technically considered a group or band of youngsters who associate closely for social reasons. For those groups who are NON-VIOLENT, society tends to call them "cliques" or "clubs", and reserve "gangs" for those groups that promotes violence, fear, intimidation, and criminal activities. It seems to me that these boys have done just that, and therefore, are justifiably labeled gang members by the authorities. For heavens sake, they even have caps and dog tags made with the initials "FC" which stands for "Fight Club". That's a form of intimidation and it's no different than the red and blue bandannas worn by Bloods and Crypts. To set the record straight, you don't have to consider yourself a gang in order to technically be a gang. It's the actions of the group that signifies whether your group is a gang. Living where I live which is Brooklyn, NY, I have personally known both gang members and straight up criminals, and some seem to be really decent people. So, the repetitive statements I've read that "these are nice boys", and such, don't make sense. I'm sorry, but "nice boys", don't vandalize property and commit armed robbery. Maybe they were "nice boys", but they're not anymore. Most of these people are not going to broadcast their criminal activities because that wouldn't be a smart thing to do, although ironically, becoming a criminal isn't smart in itself. This gang may not be as long-running and may not have committed as many crimes as infamous gangs have, but this does not mean they should be exempt from being labeled a gang. And as far as I'm concerned, certain community members are doing these boys an injustice by dumbing-down what they are and what they have done. I am a parent. If any of my children ever did what these boys did, I would tell them in a heart beat that they are members of a VIOLENT gang, and If the cops don't lock their a**es up, I certainly would. Maybe that's what the family and friends of these boys need to do instead of trying to justify their actions.
