FALLBROOK ---- European Cello Octet will perform a Spanish-themed concert at 3 p.m. Feb. 18 in the Bob Burton Center for the Performing Arts at 2400 S. Stage Coach Lane. Until Elias Arizcuren, there had never been much music written for eight cellos and voice ----- but today this group has a repertoire of more than 150 pieces, including 65 original works written for them by leading composers, many from Latin America. Arizcuren, conductor and cellist founded Amsterdam-based Cello Octet Conjunto Iberico as the only full time cello octet in the world. Presented by Fallbrook Music Society, the program leans on Spanish and Latin American music, said Dr. Brenda Montiel, president of Fallbrook Music Society. "Spanish music appeals to the imagination, and the passionate translations are based on an exchange of emotions and have colorful theatrical aspects. We are delighted to bring this remarkable program that celebrates the beautiful sound of the cello to Fallbrook." The octet will be joined by soprano Pilar Jurado. One of the best known works on the program is "Bachianas Brasileiras" No. 5 by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, which includes passages designated for a cello octet ---- one of the few examples of the form before this group began. Manuel de Falla's "Seven Popular Spanish Songs" were originally scored for voice and piano, but are most often heard in instrumental arrangements. Jurado's stunning voice fits stylistically into these folk songs while the cellos provide the accompaniment. Cristobal Halffter's "Fandango" for eight cellos is a piece of instrumental complexity. Philip Glass's "Symphony for Eight" is adapted from a movement from his third symphony (arranged by Arizcuren), and Nobre's Tres Cancoes de Beiramar dedicated to Conjunto Iberico round out the program. Tickets cost $35 adult and $10 for students.
