memorial
Jodine Elizabeth Serrin
November 21, 1967 ó February 14, 2007
We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name ó In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same ó It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone ó For part of us went with you, the day God called you home ó You left us beautiful memories, we didnít plan to be apart ó And though we cannot see you, you will always be in our heart. ó Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same ó But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
Jodine, known as Jodi to family and friends, was an innocent victim of a senseless murder/homicide. The tragic and unforgettable circumstances of her death should not overshadow what a beautiful person she was. Her gentle heart and loving ways touched those who knew her.
Jodi was born in Glendale, California. She grew up in Walton Hills, Ohio, and graduated in 1986 from Bedford High School. She loved making flower arrangements and after the family moved to Carlsbad, California, earned a certificate in floral design. Jodi loved animals, especially Sam, her gentle white horse, and her beloved cat, Angel.
She enjoyed horseback riding, ice-skating, biking, crafts, and kayaking and found peace and comfort in taking long walks along the beach.
Jodi loved helping others, especially homebound senior citizens. She enjoyed volunteering at her church and the Humane Society. She was grateful for the support from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI). She was an enthusiastic Walk-A-Thon fundraiser for various groups each year. She treasured the time she spent with her friends at Mariposa and the Copper Hill/Friends Group.
Jodi is survived by her parents, Arthur and Lois Serrin of Carlsbad; her siblings Michael Serrin and wife Lydia, Nancy Chrisopulos and husband Thomas, Barbara Petsche and husband Jeff, Carole Cercek and husband Tom, and Chuck Serrin; her nieces and nephews; Tammy Serrin and son, Lunden, Sally Serrin, Valerie and Joey Serrin, Bryan, Jordan, and Gregory Petsche, and Amy and Jonah Cercek.
Our memories of Jodi we will cherish with love and without end.
Friends and family are welcome to attend a memorial Mass at St. Patrickís Church (3821 Adams Street, Carlsbad, CA. 92008) on Thursday, February 22, at 11 a.m. to remember and celebrate Jodiís life.
A graveside service at San Luis Rey Mission Cemetery will be for the immediate family only.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that all donations in memory of Jodine Serrin be given to: North Coastal San Diego County (NAMI), National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, P.O. Box 2235, Carlsbad, CA 92018, (888) 999-NAMI, www.naminorthcoastal.org.

memorial Martha Jane Marana
Martha lived in the Temecula, Calif., area for 44 years and she passed away on Feb.15, 2007, at the age of 78.
Services will be held at the Mormon Church on Saturday, February 24th. The viewing will be at the church from 12:30-2:30pm. The Funeral Service will begin at 2:30 p.m. The address is 29658 N. General Kearney Road, Temecula, Calif. For Information: Miller Jones (951) 672-0777.
She was born in Danville, Illinois, where she attended her school years. She married John Marana in 1947, and they moved to California in 1954.
In 1963 the Maranas purchased a ranch East of Temecula, previously owned by Frank Morgan, who played the Lion in the Wizard of Oz, with Judy Garland. They named their ranch Shamrock Valley Ranch. Overnight the city folks woke up with 65 head of registered Angus cattle, a herd bull and four, three-year old bulls. Martha played a big part in the management of the ranch and the businesses that were related to the ranch operations. The office for these businesses were located in their home so she could be with her children twenty four-seven. In addition to managing a ranch and related businesses she still had the full time job of riding herd on her children, Jeff, 11, Jean, 9 and Janet, 3, on their 950-acre playground. During the summer there were Gymkhanas almost every month in the area and many weekends were spent watching their children participate in barrel racing and pole bending events. When John was 50 he joined them in this sport and was the oldest rider in the field. Their enjoyment of horses led to owning and racing thoroughbreds. Their horses raced almost every weekend on the west coast or in Mexico and this continued through 1968. Martha and John enjoyed the excitement of horse racing and going to the track.
In 1970 the Maranas formed Shamrock Sand and Rock Corporation and they mined sand and rock out of Temecula Creek that ran through their ranch property. In 1975, Shamrock Redi Mix Company was started and they had batch plants in Aguanga, Calif., and Old Town Temecula. Shamrock sponsored baseball teams, picnics and other social events for their employees. Martha took a keen interest in their baseball team and she attended all of their games regardless of where they played and led the rooting section. Her job as a mother to an 18 year old son, a 16 and 10 year old daughter, living on a ranch, became much more lively and demanding.
In 1976 they purchased the Homestead Restaurant in Temecula. They expanded it to include a night club that featured bands five nights a week and other forms of entertainment. They loved to dance and enjoyed the business for a full 10 years.
In 1986 they sold the Homestead Corporation and Shamrock Redi Mix and semi-retired.
They purchased a motor home and traveled throughout the United States. Martha loved nothing more than her frequent trips to the beach with her family in their motor home. Martha and John loved to bowl and belonged to the Elk's Lodge bowling league for many years. Martha finally had the time to take cruises with her family including Alaska, Mexico and the Panama Canal as well as car trips across the United States.
In 2003 they sold Shamrock Sand and Rock and were finally retired. All of the warm and personal relationships they had with their employees, over 54 years, continue through the present day.
Martha is survived by her husband of 59 years, John; their children, Jeffrey and his wife, Tamira Marana, Jean and her husband, Gary Clawson and Janet and her husband, Chris Gillies, also, her six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
