OCEANSIDE -- Quantum Learning Network will hold a SuperCamp Preview Night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 8 at 1938 Avenida del Oro. Admission is free.
The event is for parents of children entering grades four through 12 in the fall. Parents will learn about SuperCamp's 10-day summer learning and life skills program, which will be held at eight colleges around the country, including Cal State San Marcos.
SuperCamp facilitators will discuss how SuperCamp achieves results with children in just 10 days, including 84 percent of children reporting an increase in self-esteem, 73 percent showing an increase in grades and 98 percent continuing to use the skills they learned at camp. Volunteer park rangers needed
POWAY -- The city's Community Services Department is recruiting volunteers to become reserve park rangers. The reserve park ranger program helps to secure and manage 3,000 recreational acres, including 61 miles of pedestrian, bicycle and equestrian trials and city recreation programs.
Prospective volunteers must be age 17 or older, have a valid California driver's license and pass a background investigation that includes fingerprinting. The application process includes completing an application form and participating in a screening interview, which will take place March 24 at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road.
New volunteers will participate in a training academy. The first session will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. March 27. Following sessions will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Mondays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays through April 28.

Youth soccer program offered
RANCHO PENASQUITOS -- The Rancho Family YMCA's coed spring soccer league for children in kindergarten through fifth grade will run from March 31 through May 12.
The program is designed for all ability levels and revolves around having fun. One-hour games will he held on Saturdays, preceded by 45-minute practices. The teams are coached by trained parent volunteers. Players receive team shirts and end-of-season awards.
Registration is ongoing. Cost is $65; $50 for YMCA members.
Other six-week YMCA programs, including gymnastics, dance and swimming, will begin March 26.

Scholarship candidates must be female and a high school graduate; reside in Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Sabre Springs, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Mira Mesa, Rancho Penasquitos, Scripps Ranch or Ramona; be a re-entry student who has been out of high school or college for at least three years before current enrollment; be currently enrolled in or accepted to a four-year college or university; provide verification of registration; and not already have a bachelor's degree.

'Snow White' auditions planned
SAN MARCOS -- The city's Theatre West youth theater group invites youths ages 7 to 18 to audition for the musical "Snow White" from 5 to 8 p.m. March 12 at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive.

Calvin College Gospel Choir to perform in SM
SAN MARCOS -- The Calvin College Gospel Choir from Grand Rapids, Mich., will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. March 20 at Crossroads Christian Reformed Church, 2406 N. Twin Oaks Valley Road.
The concert, titled "Total Praise," features Richard Smallwood's song by the same name, as well as compositions by Southern California musicians Kurt Carr and Diane White.

'Charlie Brown' auditions set for March 10

Start Smart class targets teen drivers
The California Highway Patrol holds Start Smart driver safety education classes that target new and future licensed teenage drivers between the age of 15 and 19 and their parents/guardians. Classes are held at CHP headquarters, 1888 Oceanside Blvd.
Teen drivers are found at fault in 66 percent of all fatal collisions they are involved in, although they only represent 4 percent of the state's licensed drivers. The leading cause of death for Americans age 15 to 20 is motor vehicle collisions. Sixty-five percent of teen passenger deaths occur when another teenager is driving.
CHP officers will discuss traffic collision avoidance techniques, collision causing factors, driver/parent responsibilities and seat-belt usage. Blood drive slated

ESCONDIDO -- The California Nu Chi Unit of Parliamentarians invites officers, chairmen and board members of all types, including homeowners' associations, to learn basic parliamentary law in order to know how to actively participate in their meetings.

Volunteers needed at Camp Pendleton

Angel Society approves $11,180 for local projects
FALLBROOK -- The board of directors for Fallbrook's Angel Society recently awarded funds totaling $11,180 to the following nonprofit organizations that support the needs of the community:

Mason Weaver to address Republican women

Sale at church to benefit hunger relief
FALLBROOK -- The Community Baptist Church of Fallbrook will hold its annual "Magnificent March Super Garage Sale for Hunger Relief" from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 10 at the church, 731 S. Stage Coach Lane.
Items for sale will include kitchen gadgets, pots and pans, dishes, furniture, lamps, tables, sofas, chairs, books, toys, baby items and tools.

Blood drive set for March 22
FALLBROOK -- Albertson's, 1133 S. Mission Road, will host a San Diego Blood Bank blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 22. The bloodmobile will be in the parking lot.
Donors at this drive will be awarded a voucher for a free whale watching trip donated by Helgren's Oceanside Sportfishing (due to rising fuel costs there will be a $5 surcharge per person). Participants also can join the San Diego Blood Bank's new Donor Difference program, which includes access to an online store for donors and the ability to track cholesterol, pulse, and blood pressure after each donation.

Income tax preparation help available
FALLBROOK -- Free state and federal income tax preparation is offered at the Joslyn Senior Center, corner of Heald Lane and Fallbrook Street. This service is available to all Fallbrook residents regardless of age and is sponsored by AARP in cooperation with the IRS.

Mount Rushmore trip offered
FALLBROOK -- Participants are needed for the Fallbrook Senior Citizens Center trip to Mount Rushmore scheduled from May 12 through 20. Cost is $659 per person, double occupancy; $909 per person, single occupancy.
The cost includes motorcoach transportation; eight days lodging, including four consecutive nights in South Dakota; 14 meals (eight breakfasts and six dinners); and several tours of places of interest. Tips for two step-on guides and the bus driver are extra.
Thirty participants are needed for the trip. The bus holds 55 passengers, so everyone is free to change seats and move around.

Disney Memorial Auction to benefit OGHS athletics
ESCONDIDO -- The Orange Glen High School Athletics Boosters Club will host the 11th annual Dick Disney Memorial Auction to benefit the school's athletic teams. The auction will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. March 10 in the school gymnasium, 2200 Glenridge Road.

Quilt exhibit, discussion planned
ESCONDIDO -- A quilt exhibit is under way and will continue through the end of the month at the Escondido History Center in Grape Day Park, 321 N. Broadway.
More than 50 quilts are on display in every room of the Victorian Country Home. About one-third of the quilts have never before been exhibited. All the quilts were made before 1940, with the earliest dating back to the 1880s. Additionally, fanciful crazy quilts are featured in an exhibit in another building of the history center, the city's first public library.
Every quilt has a story and the public is invited to bring their favorite quilt and share its story at a roundtable discussion with other quilt lovers at 2 p.m. March 21 in the Santa Fe Depot.
The history center is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Group tours are available mornings or at other times with prior arrangement. The history center includes the Victorian House, the city's first library, Santa Fe Train Depot, a railroad car with model train, a working blacksmith shop and a barn.

Cruisin' Grand to return March 30
ESCONDIDO -- Cruisin' Grand kicks into high gear for the 2007 season with a new title sponsor, Kragen Auto Parts, which has three stores in Escondido and a total of 489 stores in the state.
The Downtown Business Association's Cruisin' Grand returns to downtown Escondido a week earlier than originally planned -- on March 30 -- after many requests from visitors attending a regional car show in the area that weekend, who would also like to participate in Cruisin' Grand.
Cruisin' Grand will run from 5 to 9 p.m. every Friday from March 30 through Sept. 28. Join more than 400 pre-1974 American-made hot rods, custom, vintage and classic cars and trucks on the Friday evening cruises down Grand Avenue.

Volunteer musicians needed
ESCONDIDO -- Patio Playhouse Community Theater will present "The King and I" this summer at Kit Carson Park.
Volunteer musicians who play the following instruments are needed to join the orchestra: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello, bass and harp. The theater group also needs a pianist for rehearsals and performances, as well as an experienced conductor.
Students are welcome. There is no pay, but the group offers a fun, friendly, supportive atmosphere and one free show ticket to each orchestra member.
"The King and I" will be performed at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays (with one Sunday show) from Aug. 10 through Sept. 2.

Take a hike at Daley Ranch
ESCONDIDO -- Free, guided nature hikes are offered at Daley Ranch.
All trails include steep and/or slippery sections. Bring at least a quart of water and wear a hat, sunscreen and hiking boots or treaded footwear. Youths younger than 18 must be with an adult. No pets are allowed. Meet at La Honda Drive entrance, unless otherwise noted.

Population impact is the topic
ESCONDIDO -- The North Inland chapter of the League of Women Voters will meet from 10 a.m. to noon March 10 at the Joslyn Senior Center, 210 Park Ave. The group will host two speakers who hold opposing views on the question "Population Impact: Should We Be Alarmed?"
Arguing that there is cause for alarm will be Dr. Milton Saier, a professor at UC San Diego and president of the San Diego chapter of Population Connection. Arguing that there is no cause for alarm will be Raul Lopez Palm, who has a master's degree in science operation and statistics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and has been the owner of a successful business in Escondido for 23 years.

Photographer of American Indians is focus of exhibit
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Museum of Man will present "Edward S. Curtis Refocused," an exhibition that will examine the works of this famed early 20th-century photographer from the viewpoints of present-day descendants of the tribes he photographed. The exhibition will open March 10 at the museum in Balboa Park.
Joining the museum for the opening weekend will be George P. Horse Capture Sr., whose great-grandfather, Horse Capture, was photographed by Curtis in 1909. A leader in the American Indian community and staff member of the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., for eight years, he will present a lecture, "Discovering My Great-grandfather Through Edward S. Curtis," at 1 p.m. March 11 in the museum's Gill Auditorium.
