Bolts keep Withrow

The Chargers retained backup center Cory Withrow, agreeing to terms on a three-year contract with the unrestricted free agent.

Withrow, 31, played in 11 games last season, seeing most of his action on special teams. He played his first six NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.

"Cory is a solid, experienced veteran who provides reliable depth for us along the offensive line," general manager A.J. Smith said on the team's Web site.

Then, it seems like every free-agent signing in the NFL lately was aming at them. It is crucially important for them not to stand pat which tantamounts to siding backward. May be AJ wil wait until after draft day to pickup non-draft free agents? Anyway, with the SB in their minds, it will be a telling draft comes April. The secondary has been screaming for new talents and new IQ quotent.

And that will be adressed in the draft. And look at the free agents available. We don't need none of them. Our roster is stacked everywhere. Besides, taking care of your own is better than signing free agents. They'll always be one step ahead of a free agent because they won't have to learn anything new. Charger fans need to trust A.J. The guy knows exactly what he's doing.

Rich wrote on Mar 7, 2007 2:12 PM:I think that AJ Smith is frickin' brilliant. He's not running around like a chicken with his head cut off throwing ridiculous amounts of money on crappy free agents. Thank God Denver is just the opposite. They just signed Daniel Graham, a so-so TE to a contract that makes him the second highest paid TE in the game, I do believe. Didnt they just draft one in the 2nd round last year? That shows a lot of confidence. Also, Travis Henry? Give me a break. They way over paid for him. I'm just glad AJ has the brains to tender Michael Turner so that teams like Denver don't get him. I think that moves like that show how he's the cream of the crop as far as NFL GMs, echoed by the fact that he was rated the number 4 GM in all of pro sports by Forbes magazine. He'll figure out something for the draft. I think he'll pick a safety first, then a WR. Like the old Padres' addage, 'Keep the Faith'.

You don't want to over spend and be locked up in the future. Have some confidence in A.J., he DID use to be a scout for crying out loud!

NorCal Charger wrote on Mar 7, 2007 3:03 PM:I agree with you all, but come on...Jammer will never live up to his billing. This was supposed to be the second coming of Neon Dion..and he is far from bright lights. They need a true vet in the 2ndary who can cover and not get burned or called for a penalty. I like Jammer, but do not think our core 2ndary has complimented our front 7.

Boratsfavoriteson wrote on Mar 7, 2007 3:37 PM:YEAH! We signed Withrow... RIGHT ON! ...wait... who's Withrow?

RC wrote on Mar 7, 2007 4:10 PM:After reading the first Email, it was good to read the rest to see that there are some people who know what they're talking about. How good have the Redskins been with all the money they've spent on free agencey? I wouldn't be surprised if the Chargers eventually sign a FA free safety though. How about a #1 pick on a wide receiver though? The talent is stacked!

MP wrote on Mar 7, 2007 6:20 PM:THE CHARGERS SHOULD TRADE MICHAEL TURNER FOR 2 DRAFT PICKS THIS YEAR AND TRY TO WIN SUPER BOWL BEFORE THEIR WINDOW CLOSES. NEXT YEAR WHEN HE SIGNS ELSEWHERE THEIR ONLY GET A 3RD ROUND COMPENSATION PICK. IF I WERE OZZIE NEWSOME OF THE RAVENS I WOULD SIGN TURNER TO A LONG TERM CONTRACT RIGHT NOW, IT ONLY COSTS THEM A 1ST AND 3RD ROUND PICK, BESIDES BALTIMORE PICKS AT THE END OF THE ROUNDS 1 & 3. WITH MICHAEL TURNER AS A BALTIMORE RAVEN THEY WIN THE SUPER BOWL NEXT YEAR AND HE LEADS THE LEAGUE IN RUSHING- NO BRAINER!!!

GoGo wrote on Mar 7, 2007 6:51 PM:I think the chargers should draft Griffin, safety out of Texas if he's available in the 1st. Pass on the WR until the 2nd or 3rd round. WR rarely make an impact in their first year.

OsideDave wrote on Mar 7, 2007 9:37 PM:The bottom line is that this first pick needs to be spent on the best safety or wide out available. Then go ILB, DL, & OL. Gotta stay deep!

Brad in Tel Aviv wrote on Mar 8, 2007 7:13 AM:To quote my friend Ryan: "Get it done! If you gauge centers by how much they point before the snap (which Im sure we all agree you do), this guy's a potential pro bowler. And he has great hair."

Rich wrote on Mar 8, 2007 7:43 AM:Well, what big name free agents did The Bolts, Indy or New England sign last year? None and all three were in the playoffs. That goes to show you that you don't need to be extremely active in the free agent market to be successful. I think AJ is smart by keeping the continuity of the team in tact for the long term instead of throwing money at big names. When your biggest FA signing last year is Marlon McCree and you go 14-2, you must be doing something correctly.

Sean C. wrote on Mar 8, 2007 8:55 PM:Jammer is a good guy who does a good job. If your looking for the 2nd coming of Dion Sanders talent wise. Antonio Cromartie is the closest to his talent level along w/ Champ Bailey. Cromartie has an excellent work ethic & he will be one of the premiere cover corners in the league sooner than later
