Bolts re-sign Floyd
By: MIKE SULLIVAN - Staff Writer | ∞
Receiver Malcom Floyd, an exclusive rights free agent who caught three touchdown passes last season, signed a one-year contract to remain with the Chargers.
Floyd caught 15 passes for 210 yards in his third year with the organization. He played in 12 games before an early-December ankle injury ended his season.
"Malcom is a young guy who stepped in and made some plays for us last season," general manager A.J. Smith said on the team's Web site. "He's got good size and speed. We believe he can continue to help us."

Brian wrote on Mar 8, 2007 10:59 AM:We still need better players at the WR position. Floyd isn't bad but he doesn't get enough seperation. Ted Ginn Jr. would be a nice pickup in the draft, if we can get him.
chappy wrote on Mar 8, 2007 1:38 PM:You obviously dont know AJ Smith, he wont draft a receiver in the first round. This receiver class is great, way better than last years. We'll get a receiver in a later round and draft a saftey. everyone keep your eyes on WR Legedu Naanee, #4 from Boise State,he had a great combine. He's gonna be the steal of the draft!!!
Sean C. wrote on Mar 8, 2007 5:26 PM:If a team gives us a 1 & a 3 for Turner maybe we get a WR in round 1 other wise we will go defense. Floyd is a good one, if he can stay healthy. Who`s Naanee? 6ft 2, 228 lbs, runs a 4.41 40yd, caught a team high 34 receptions his senior year probably a round 3 or 4
RC wrote on Mar 8, 2007 6:17 PM:Hey Chappy: Thank God we have an AJ Smith confidant. Everybody who knows AJ knows exactly who he will pick and won't pick. He's so predictible, everyone saw the Vick-Tomlinson draft pick swap comming. And like the Manning-Rivers trade was a big surprise. Thank God we have someone like you to set us straight on what AJ will do!
Ritlock wrote on Mar 8, 2007 7:21 PM:I don't think we will get anything form Turner, but we still need another receiver, Floyd is good though, but we really need a natural number one receiver..mmm...hopefully A.J. will do it again in the draft, maybe gettin Ted Ginn Jr. will do..
Danny wrote on Mar 8, 2007 7:59 PM:Keep in mind that our three young receivers...Floyd, Osgood and Jackson are tall, athletic and have one more year under their belt....not to mention Rivers. I too, believe we will pick up an excellent receiver in the second round.....as for a first round pick...who knows except Norv, AJ and the man above...and all I know is that I am juiced up for next season!
Count Chocula wrote on Mar 8, 2007 8:00 PM:Here's a wacky scenario. If the Browns would swap their number 3 pick for the Chargers number 27 (?) pick PLUS ready-to-rumble Burner Turner, AJ could get Johnson, the best receiver -- the best player -- in the draft. A good and experienced safety can be be bought or traded for. Discuss.
PL wrote on Mar 8, 2007 9:24 PM:RC: Dude, slow down. AJ was the no. 2 guy for LT-Vick, and it wasn't that big a shocker, the Vick part of it anyway. And Manning-Rivers has nothing to do with drafting wide receivers. Who drafts a wide receiver with the No. 1 pick? And chappy could well be right about Smith's feelings about WR. Smith's had, what four or five chances to take a receiver in the first round and passed every time. In fact, he's drafted a WR exactly once. Jackson, who could be a major player this season. Safety's a much bigger concern.
James wrote on Mar 8, 2007 10:49 PM:Does anybody here know football at all? Jackson's a bonafide number one...he will be huge next year...A few years ago Eric Parker was the up and comer and has become an excellent number two...There's a reason Shaun McDonald is in for a visit...just looking for depth and special teams...no way Chargers go first round with a receiver...Don't be suprised for AJ to trade his one spot and a number 3 to trade up and get Laron Landry
tubaroo wrote on Mar 8, 2007 11:12 PM:I'm a little bummed out that we got rid of McCardell. I thought that he was/is better than Parker. Maybe we should have cut Jammer just for getting toasted by Caldwell in the playoffs. Regarding the draft, it is such a gamble that the majority of the people that are drafted in the early rounds end up choking on chili dogs. There is a huge difference between college and the NFL, and just because one is awesome in college does not guarantee success in the NFL. The draft is mostly hype.
scottdee wrote on Mar 9, 2007 6:49 AM:Glad to see people talking draft. I agree that strong safety is our new #1 priority after Dielman signing. I agree V-Jax will be our new #1 receiver. The re-signing of WRs Floyd and Camarillo are going to make the competition for the remaining WR spots interesting. As an Ohio resident and Buckeye fan I can tell you Ginn, Jr. is a bit undersized, injury-prone, and a so-so route runner with undeniable blazing speed. A bit of a project at the pro level and there's talk he could be converted to DB. Let's not forget that if it comes down to AJ choosing a WR, SS, or LB that "strong character" will be the deciding factor. Unless a team makes a move for Burner Turner, I don't see AJ making any major moves in free agency or trading up/down in the draft. When your team is only 1 or 2 players away from the Super Bowl, conventional wisdom says you don't make alot of risky personnel moves. In the middle and late first round there will be a run on safeties and WRs so don't be surprised to see someone like Auburn LB Patrick Willis (a bigger/faster Dobbins with character) slip through the cracks and wind up with Bolts.
Get Real wrote on Mar 9, 2007 8:46 AM:We have a huge hole at safety and wr. Everyone talking about dumping gatorade on Norv Freiken Turner needs to relax. We have no established wr. Eric Parker is a #3 on a great team & Vincent Jackson is an unknown. I would have liked to see us make a run at Joe Horn. & Safety - anyone remember Stanley "The Sheriff" Richards? Anyone remember him getting beaten, badly & repeatedly in the Super Bowl? Now tell me who thinks Bhawoh Jue is better than Stanley. & for all you thinking we're going to trade up for Laron Landry - are you willing to give up next year's #1 to do it???
Northernmost Bolthead wrote on Mar 9, 2007 10:11 AM:I agree with grumpy James on one point: VJ is the #1 WR next year, and will be great. The trouble with taking a S in the draft is waiting 1-3 years for him to mature. Oh, and Parker is an excellent receiver? The goal is to go deep into the playoffs, but Parker freaked out against the Pats. There's a screw loose in that Bolt.
Vinny ECB wrote on Mar 9, 2007 10:43 AM:Bolts fans, Its possible to move up in the 1st round if they package Burner & #30. The Count & myself are in the same mindset about moving atleast Turner & #30 to Cleve for #3 & selecting C-Jack. That pipe dream is kinda out the door w/ Jamal Lewis signing. I agree w/ most of y'all that taking a S is option 1. Nelson, Griffin, or Merriweather could be avail @ 30. If Meachem or Bowe is avail @ 30, they'll be tough to pass up. Dielman back in the fold and can't be more happy. Gotta get over that hump in 2007! East Coast Bolt
Troy wrote on Mar 9, 2007 1:26 PM:The last thing the bolts oughtta do is trade anything to move up. Aside from Calvin Johnson, there isnt a WR worth taking in the top half of round 1 and safety will be available in the second round. We'll sit tight right where we are and pick a WR in Rd 1 unless someone like Patrick Willis falls to us (or if six WR go before we pick). Then we'll go for FS in Rd 2 and get a guy like Merriwhether or, my personal favorite, Griffin outta UT. The only thing that could throw a wrench into the works would be if a guy like Reggie Nelson is still around at #30, I presonally dont think the guy is any better than a mid second rounder but I wouldnt be shocked to see us take a flyer on him at the end of #1. If anyone's noticed, drafting DBs is pretty much AJ's weakest area as a scout (See Sammy Davis, Drayton Florence, Terrence Kiel, Hanik Milligan, etc). PS- Nothernmost Bolthead, safeties develop much more quickly than do WR. The problem is, our WR are just awful. We dont know what VJ is yet and the rest of the squad is a bunch of #3 & #4 WRs, none are fit to start. McCree will provide tremendous stewardship to whomever we draft to QB the secondary so that allows us a little wiggle to draft a lesser player at that position. At WR, we have no established leader to mentor anyone so we need to make sure that the player has a lower "floor" like Bowe or Rice as opposed to going for someone with a high "ceiling" like Ginn.
James wrote on Mar 9, 2007 3:47 PM:Eric Parker is a legit #2. Everybody is looking for big guys...he was nails the whole season...most reliable reciever...had a tough game in the playoffs...he just tried too hard...a couple of dropped passes and a muffed punt...that was the exception with this guy...didn't drop a punt all season...don't forget who made the catch that put them in position to even try a 54 yarder...He's a character guy...self-made...AJ loves the guy...he will be back...HUGE!!! Who said you have to wait for a safety to develop...anyone hear of Troy P. or Sean Taylor?....It's not AJ's m.o. to trade up...sure...but it is his m.o. to make great moves to better his team...this year it's going to be difficult for draft picks to make this roster...so giving swapping positions in the first round and giving up there number three is possible...Laron Landry was top 15 last year and will be again this year...a safety running in the 4.3's with his size and ball skills...if he drops between 10-15 it might be possible...some team may not be in love with what they see at that time and may want to swap 1's and pick up a three!
James wrote on Mar 9, 2007 3:49 PM:Oh and the guy who said the possibility of picking up Merriwether...never gonna happen..character issues...AJ won't go near the guy...and Griffin won't last past round 1
Sean C. wrote on Mar 9, 2007 5:55 PM:Uh, our Offense scored the most pts in the entire league! Defense will likely be the top priority in the draft we need an intimidator at the safety position someone who can wear # 37 with a mean attitude. AJ knows football.
GS wrote on Mar 10, 2007 7:23 AM:James is right on about it being hard for draft picks to make the 07 team....How many picks do we have this year? How many compensatory picks will we get? Factor in the compensatory picks from free agent losses over the last few years(i.e., Drew Brees and others)....and A.J. will have more lower round picks to work with. Don't be surprised if he trades up...but he won't move up to top 10. I don't think he wants to pay millions to unproven rookies. If he doesn't trade up, he should trade some lower draft picks for future year draft picks, cause lower draft picks will be camp fodder. Don't think Michael Turner goes anywhere this year, cause AJ knows this team is close to the SB, and he values the depth MT provides.
GS wrote on Mar 10, 2007 7:31 AM:James was right on about this year's picks being hard pressed to make the 07 team.....How many draft picks will we have this year? How many compensatory picks from past free agent losses will we get? (Awarded late in March by the league, I've read.) Factor in the compensatory picks, and AJ will have lots to work with. I expect him to move up, but probably not up to top 10 or 15.....he doesn't like to give millions to unproven rookies.....I also think we may see him trade some of this year's picks for higher picks next year.....cause this year's rookies will mostly be camp fodder. Turner won't go anywhere, cause AJ loves the depth he provides, and this team is too close to SB to give up a guy like him......AJ knows he'll lose him next year, but will keep him this year and hope he helps 07 team to SB.
Burt Bulos wrote on Mar 10, 2007 2:29 PM:For those stat boys who know nothing. Our receivers are awesome! I'll bet all of you AJ passes on drafting a receiver early. We have a powerful running game and LT scored 30 something touchdowns so our receiver stats aren't going to be through the roof...Gates' numbers were down but it doesn't make him any less great...numbers are deceiving...our secondary played well last year but they will probably never be top 5 because our offense is so prolific that everyone will have to pass...don't assess by numbers alone...there's a whole lot more to it...AJ is going to go safety, tight end depth, o-line depth and linebacker depth...there's a reason Shaun McDonald was in for a visit...he's not going to crack the starting line-up but he's a great 3 or 4 and a valubale punt returner!
