Bird-count contest under way

JULIAN ---- Residents of the backcountry who maintain wild bird feeding stations are invited to participate in a bird-count contest sponsored by the Birdwatcher store in Julian. Participants are asked to identify and record the various species that visit their feeders over the next few weeks and send their lists in.

"We want to identify as many different species of birds as possible," said store owner Rick Campbell, who plans to make this an annual contest. So far, about 50 different species of birds have been identified in Julian, but Campbell thinks there may be more. "We will gather data this time of year for several years, compile it and see what we have."

Prizes will be awarded to those who come up with the most different species by March 31. Two separate lists will be kept ---- one for the Julian area and one for the Ramona area. Fourty-pound bags of the store's signature Birdwatcher Premium bird seed and a case of premium suet will go to the bird watcher in each area who provides the longest list of local species. All species of seed-eating and nectar-drinking birds qualify. Borrego Springs road runners count; however, Ramona turkey vultures do not.

E-mail lists to Campbell at julianbirdwatcher@yahoo.com on a weekly basis. The top five contestants for each area will be posted on the Web site at http://www.thebirdwatcher.net. The names of the winners will be posted on the Web site at the end of the contest.

For information, call Campbell at The Birdwatcher at (760) 765-1817.
