Roses & raspberries

The 'Least of My People' award

A raspberry, albeit a conflicted one, to the folks gathering petitions outside of Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Carlsbad last week to pressure the church into not welcoming a convicted child molester into its congregation.

Mark Pliska's admitted crimes are terrible; there is no doubting that. But the fact that he volunteered the information to the congregation should stand for something. The church's pastor, the Rev. Madison Shockley, said they were already struggling with how to proceed. They didn't need the petition drive outside their doors, organized by Vista's Jessica Muehlhausen, to arouse their conscience.

Muehlhausen's concerns are certainly understandable. Two of her children attend Pilgrim Children's Center next door to the church. She told our Gary Warth: "I think he should attend a church that doesn't have a children's center. If Pilgrim Church wants to save this man, they can do some kind of outreach at his home or off campus." She said it didn't matter that the preschool would be closed Sundays, when Pliska was attending services.

As a society, we have not figured out how to deal with convicted sex offenders who have paid their debt to society. The November passage of Jessica's Law, which would track sex offenders for life via electronic bracelets, won't apply to the men and women whose crimes were committed before Nov. 7.

But look what happened in this case: TV coverage of Muehlhausen's petition drive prompted Pliska to be evicted from his Escondido home. On Friday, he was fired from his job. Do we really think that homeless, unemployed convicted sex offenders are better for our communities than those who have tried to find shelter in a supportive church?

The 'Green Marines' award

A rose to Maj. Gen. Michael Lehnert, who commands the Marine Corps' West Coast bases, for organizing the first-ever Marine Corps Installations West Conservation Expo 2007 on Thursday to discuss the military's stewardship of the environment on their bases and in their training.

Though some shudder when the bombs burst on Camp Pendleton's practice ranges, the Marines' beachhead there is the sole reason the Los Angeles and San Diego metropolitan regions haven't merged. Marine conservation efforts have enabled training critical to the nation's security to co-exist with habitat and species protection on a scale unparalleled along the Southern California coastline.

While there may be more the Marines can do to protect the environment, the Thursday conference on Camp Pendleton was an excellent sign that the Corps is striving to improve its already fine record of balanced management.

Lehnert said it best: "A country worth defending is a country worth preserving."

The 'More The Merrier' award

A rose to Oceanside councilmen Rocky Chavez for initiating a summit next month between leaders of the Oceanside Unified, Vista Unified and Bonsall Union school districts, MiraCosta College and Tri-City Medical Center. All told, 34 elected representatives are invited to the two-hour, public meeting at 10 a.m. April 28 at the MiraCosta College campus in Oceanside.

Each of these agencies serves Oceanside residents, so it can't hurt to bring them together to discuss shared goals and common challenges. It might even spark creative ideas for addressing communitywide problems; we certainly hope so.

Who invited agencies? wrote on Mar 11, 2007 11:13 PM:A friend on one of the boards said she got a letter from Mayor Wood inviting her board to the meeting. Is this another example of the NCTimes giving Chavez the credit for something Wood did? You guys have never liked Wood and it appears Chavez can do no wrong. Except of course, sau he is the principal of a school when he has no teaching credential and cannot keep the required number of students at his school. The only reason the school board keeps it open is the politics played by Noonan and Chavez. I just wish folks would wake up and smell the coffee about him but of course when it does close you will give some reason that makes him look good.

Alf wrote on Mar 12, 2007 5:46 AM:Congratulations, Jessica Muehlhausen. You have, through your paranoia, started a process whereby a repentant man loses first his home, then his job. Truly, the antithesis of "Christian" behavior. What next?

NOP_Christine wrote on Mar 12, 2007 8:37 AM:Indeed, Jessica - you have successfully violated every Scriptural requirement regarding interpersonal conflict within the Body of Christ. No one excuses the crime or crimes committed by this penitent, but there is nowhere in Scripture that says sexual sin is beyond the forgiveness of God. If the church had a safety plan in place and he was not going to be there when your child was in the children's program, then you should not have insinuated yourself into this situation. I seriously hope that, if they keep your children in their program, they do so only on the condition that YOU are never on their property, because it is YOU, madame, that is causing the majority of the trouble right now, not this penitent sinner who has told the entire congregation of his sin. The church is not a shrine for the righteous - it is a hospital for sinners, of all kinds, who want to receive Christ's gifts of redemption and the ability to live a right life.

Rick wrote on Mar 12, 2007 10:42 AM:I am surprised that I would come to the defense of a sex offender as I have 3 children of my own. But Muehlhausen's actions don't seem to follow in Jesus' footsteps. Didn't Jesus heal a leper, after all? I am unable to think of a better metaphore in the modern context. I hope Muehlhausen repents for her sin by providing shelter for Mr. Pliska.

Congrats to Marine Corp wrote on Mar 12, 2007 12:06 PM:Yes, they have taken their environmental stewardship seriously. Now why can't the city council and planning staff in Oceanside understand this and do the same?

Oceansider wrote on Mar 12, 2007 6:30 PM:Something is very wrong here..the guy admits to being a child molester..lives in Escondido yet wants to attend Church in Carlsbad right next door to a children's center? Doesn't pass the smell test!~

Horrified wrote on Mar 12, 2007 10:20 PM:I think it is disgusting that you are calling out Jessica as the bad guy here. I helped with contacting the media as well, I guess I get your brilliant award too. Please keep in mind that we have a right to protect our children and the children in the community that we live in. He had choices, the church had choices and we do too. The church should have found another option for his worship away from kids as we requested. As parents, we have choices too and we all have to live with the decisions we make, I am happy with mine because we probably saved some kid his torture.

Horrified wrote on Mar 12, 2007 10:24 PM:You should not point fingers at the parents of the children attending that pre-school, why risk it. He had other options and the church had other options, they didn't want to do anything but accept this sexual predator under their "all are welcome" sign. Let's put the children first and not worry so much about the predator, they chose to commit crimes against children who cannot defend themselves. I am with Jessica on this and I am happy if he goes elsewhere, away from the kids in the community of Carlsbad!

Saddened wrote on Mar 12, 2007 11:26 PM:I must say that I am truly saddened by the behavior of Jessica Muelhausen... do you feel better now that this man has been fired from his job and lost his home? Ths church was open and honest with you, just as the "offender" was open and honest with the church. So tell me, is your judgemental and vindictive behavior morally less reprehensible than the sex offender's PAST behavior? To others who have done nothing but inflame the fear: The Megan's Law website does not contain detailed and specific information about the nature of this person's past convictions. Exactly what you are basing your fears on? Your own past experiences? Your worst nightmares about what could happen to your children? (By the way, I am a survivor of child sexual abuse and the mother of a young child. If I can get past my own knee-jerk reaction and use the BRAIN GOD GAVE ME to be compassionate and understanding, then so can you.) To the honest man who came clean to Pilgrim Church: I understand why you sought to worship at that particular church, as it has long been known for its accepting atmosphere. I am so sorry that others have acted so quickly to condemn you. Right now you probably feel pretty awful, but when your life is back together, I would seriously consider suing Jessica Muehlhausen. I'm sure she looked you up on the Megan's Law database and the website clearly states: "Anyone who uses this information to commit a crime or to harass an offender or his or her family is subject to criminal prosecution and civil liability." Finally, to Rev. Shockley: I applaud your moral courage to take on such a difficult issue; that's what a good minister ought to do. In your heart you know what is right so steer the course....

To Alf wrote on Mar 14, 2007 10:18 AM:I'm agnostic and use common sense as the basis for my decisions not what some guy that may or may not have existed forever ago thinks I should do. So enough with the "christian behavior" BS. JM

JJC wrote on Mar 14, 2007 10:55 AM:I hope that "Jessica" and "Horrified" (and other like-minded people) decide to find another church to attend. In fact, it seems that they could form their own church because they obviously "walk on water" and are "without sin". Of course, the cannot call themselves "Christian" in that they certainly are not acting in the manner of Christ. As the bumber sticker says, "What Would Jesus Do?" I don't know how they can sleep at night or look themselves in the mirror and still consider themselves "Christian". I guess it's easy to "talk the talk" but the can't "walk the talk". Too Bad. Maybe they can call themselves "Jessicians".

JESSICA wrote on Mar 14, 2007 11:50 AM:Once again I am Agnostic. I don't call myself Christian. So enough with the What Would Jesus Do? crap. I don't care what he would do. And thanks I think I will call myself a Jessician. Proudly. J

PilgrimParent wrote on Mar 14, 2007 12:50 PM:I am a parent of a child at Pilgrim. I'd like to point out that when you enroll your child at Pilgrim it is made very clear that there is no religious agenda at the preschool. The school has a great reputation and word of mouth and that's why we chose it. But, there is no religion as part of the preschool. So I think it's sad that the church has chosen to become involved in decisions that are potentially endangering the children of the school and adversely affecting the operation of the school. I can assure you that if the church allows a convicted sex offender attend the church my child will be looking for a new preschool. I applaud Ms. Muehlhausen for bringing the situation to our attention and I personally know people who live in the surrounding neighborhood who are concerned as well and following the story closely. I watched her on TV and she was not harrassing Mark Pliska...she was bringing a potential issue to light in a factual way. To suggest that someone sue her is one of the most irresponsible things I've read. You can forgive this guy all you want...I just don't want you to have to forgive him for molesting MY child. Use your brain.

m wrote on Mar 14, 2007 8:31 PM:he should take her to court for harassment and sue her for every dime she has . and as the final coup de gra put in the lawsuit that as part of the settlement he wants a court order that she has to let him live with her in her home until he can find somewhere else to live. i think that is a good idea anyone who is accused of harassing an so should upon convicted be ordered to have the so live in their house so they can find out that so's are people to.

To M wrote on Mar 14, 2007 9:18 PM:I'm assuming "SO's" are sexual offenders? Violent Sexual Predators aren't people they are monsters. As to suing "her" as I understand it all she did was call a news station. I don't think she was at his house personally. So it sounds like your beef should be with the news team. Circulating a petition is her first amendment right. Just as you have opinions she's allowed to have opinion as well.

TO SADDENED wrote on Mar 14, 2007 9:25 PM:the website also states that you have the right to use the information to protect a child. In this case it's to protect more than 3000 children, The kids at all 4 schools in the immediate area of Pilgrim Church. In addition to having a brain I also have common sense. The common sense not to put this man in an environment that is not only risky for the children but risky for him.

Lot wrote on Mar 14, 2007 11:28 PM:If it a non religious pre-school, would one assume that they do not conduct class on the weekends or evenings? (My cousins pre-school closes around noon Monday-Friday.) With that being said, most Church services are held on evenings (usually around 7pm) or on Sundays. Call me stupid, but I don't see a common time intersection when the man in question and your children would be on the premises at the same time. If he agrees to be supervised (like the article stated) then how would he have any contact with the children attending school?

To Lot wrote on Mar 15, 2007 10:40 AM:The problem with you is that you actually think. Thinking can lead to rational behavior. Rational behavior is EXACTLY what people like "Jessica", "Horrified" can not and will not use. They thrive, just as the pro-Prop 83 camp did, on hyperbolic fabrications, hysteria, fear that they generate with their false information. They can not let the facts interfere with their self-induced hysteria, that would keep them from their goal - illegally punishing someone twice for one crime and claiming "We didn't do it, the media did". They conveniently forget that the media were called by someone and that someone was them. The screamers of doom choose not to, and try to get others not to see the direct link between them getting the media involved in the first place and the media then hounding the guy. AND they also see no direct link and try to tell others that there nodirect link between the media hounding and his loss of his home and job.

To To SADDENED wrote on Mar 15, 2007 10:44 AM:You forget one fact, those 3000 kids that you claim are in danger ARE NOT THERE AT THE SAME TIME as the guy. Are you afraid of his cooties? That he will drop one and the next day a kid will "contract the disease"?

JHC wrote on Mar 15, 2007 11:05 AM:You're right, definitely have him as part of the group. Let him get familiar with all the children in the church...the ones that only go to church and the ones who also go to the preschool. After awhile all the kids will get used to seeing the nice man from church. Hey, and while he's in the area maybe he can familiarize himself with the neighborhood...there probably aren't many kids living in the area that he's attracted to...most of the kids are probably over 5 years old. What a nice man. Definitely keep that guy around! He's an asset to the community.
