North San Diego County School News Briefs: Golf tourney to aid mission, school

OCEANSIDE -- The Mission Knights of Columbus Council 3162 and the Old Mission Montessori School will hold the fourth annual Charity Golf Tournament on April 2 at the local USMC Camp Pendleton Golf Course.

Proceeds from the tournament will go toward the cost of retrofitting buildings on the mission grounds, including the parish and school, to make them earthquake safe.

Tournament check-in time is 11:30 a.m. An awards dinner and live auction will follow the event. The entrance fee to the best-ball-scramble tournament is $110 per player for entries received before March 12, and $135 per player after that date. The cost includes a shirt, putting contest, golf cart, boxed lunch, range balls and beverages. Sponsorship opportunities also are available.

Boys & Girls Club Week to be celebrated

FALLBROOK -- The Boys & Girls Clubs of North County will join Boys & Girls Clubs of America in celebration of National Boys & Girls Club Week between March 25 and March 30.

Activities are planned for all club sites in Fallbrook, Pala and Bonsall, including games, contests, prizes and club pride. All eight locations will show club spirit with a week of special activities, which include:

  • March 26: Backward Day, put your clothes on backwards and come to the club.

  • March 27: Club Spirit Day, wear your club shirt, hat and dog tag.

  • March 28: Sports Day

  • March 29: Crazy hair/hat Day

  • March 30: Pajama Day

    Talent showcase set for March 16

    FALLBROOK -- The Boys & Girls Clubs of North County will hold its second annual Talent Showcase at 6:30 p.m. March 16 at the Ingold Unit at 445 E.     Fallbrook AAUW seeks scholarship applicants

    FALLBROOK -- Young men and women are invited to apply for scholarships through the Fallbrook chapter of the American Association of University Women. In total, the group awarded $12,000 to enrolled college students in 2006.

    Applicants must be currently enrolled full time in college and a high school graduate to apply. Deadline to apply is April 24.     'Bye, Bye, Birdie' to be performed

    FALLBROOK -- Fallbrook High School will present the rock 'n' roll classic "Bye, Bye, Birdie" March 16 through 24 at the Bob Burton Performing Arts Center on the campus at 2400 S. Stage Coach Lane. This 1960s spoof of the Army's induction of Elvis Presley (aka Conrad Birdie) was written by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams. The production is directed and choreographed by Diane Felthous, musical direction by Elizabeth Thompson and stage management by Valerie La Spisa.

    Bonsall West accepting kindergarten registrations

    BONSALL -- Bonsall West Elementary School has begun accepting kindergarten registrations for the 2007-08 school year. Packets are available in the school office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. while school is in session. An evening registration event will take place at 6 p.m. March 28.

    To be eligible for kindergarten, a child must be five years of age on or before Dec. 2. Students born between June 1 and Dec. 2, 2002 are eligible to enroll in the optional Early Kindergarten program.

    Parents must provide a valid birth certificate and a current immunization record. Children will not be admitted unless all necessary immunizations are complete. A waiver is available for children whose medical conditions or personal family beliefs forbid immunization. All kindergarten students are required to complete a current Child Health and Developmental Prevention (CHDP) exam and Oral Health Assessment form. Forms are included with the registration packet.

    Proof of residency within the Bonsall West Elementary School boundary will be required at time of registration. Closing escrow papers, mortgage book or statement, HOA fee statement, homeowner's insurance statement, lease agreement, rent receipt, and utility bills are acceptable forms of proof providing the parent/guardian's name and street address appear on the document submitted.

    Plans for golf tournament continue to take shape

    OCEANSIDE -- The second annual Bonsall West Golf Classic has been set for June 1 at Arrowwood Golf Course. The entrance fee is $150 per player and the check-in time is 12:30 p.m. The tournament will include live and silent auction and dinner following the event. The purpose of this golf tournament is to raise funds for educational tools and supplies for Bonsall West students. The students need more library books and computer hardware/software to ensure all students reach their potential in reading, writing, and mathematics.

    Bonsall West has had a partnership with the Headquarters and Support Battalion from MCB Camp Pendleton. These Marines have volunteered several hours by reading and working with the students and helping to maintain and improve the campus grounds. They will have the opportunity to play in the tournament through sponsorships.

    Montessori School plans open house sessions

    FALLBROOK -- Fallbrook Montessori School will conduct an open house sessions from 5:30 to 8 p.m. April 19 at the school at 203 Laurine Lane. The school is intended to help children become self-confident, creative problem-solvers and life-long learners.

    Classes are available for children ages 3 through 12. The curriculum includes a phonetically-based reading approach, enriched math and science geography, nature study, gardening, grace and courtesy, art, music and Spanish.

    There also is a new extended day program that runs from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.. The regular school day runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. and there is a summer program for 3 to 6 year olds. For information, call (760) 728-4754.

    Ag scholarships available

    FALLBROOK -- Any graduating senior or college student residing in the Fallbrook Union High School District and pursuing a degree in horticultural or agricultural related fields of study is eligible to apply for a 2006-07 award offered by the Fallbrook Garden Club.

    National Charity League offers scholarships

    FALLBROOK -- The San Luis Rey chapter National Charity League is offering $1,000 scholarships to college-bound Fallbrook High School senior girls. Awards are based on GPA, and school and community activities. Also taken into consideration are community service work, financial need, personal recommendation, essay and interview with the scholarship committee. One of the scholarships will be the Ann Daniel Memorial Scholarship, which goes to the girl whose commitment to community service surpasses the other applicants.

    National Charity League is a nonprofit corporation composed of Patroness and Ticktocker groups, organized to initiate and encourage charitable endeavors and to foster the mother-daughter relationship in philanthropic, cultural and leadership development.Funds for the scholarships are raised through various events throughout the year.     Old ink cartridges sought

    FALLBROOK -- Kopa Literary Magazine is a club that meets weekly at Fallbrook High School. Each year the club produces a publication comprised of student art, poetry, and short stories. To help supplement the cost of publication the Kopa team is recycling old ink cartridges with a company by the name of Empties4cash. If you or your business have empty or unwanted ink cartridges, contact the editors with the information given below and they will come and pick up you cartridge at any convenient time.     Soroptimists offer scholarships

    FALLBROOK -- Soroptimist International of Fallbrook is offering three scholarships to graduating seniors who reside in the greater Fallbrook area.

    The first is a $3,000 two-year Educational Scholarship to a four-year college or university. Recipients must carry a minimum of 12 units to qualify. The payment is $750 per semester for a total of $3,000.

    The second scholarship is a $1,000 Junior College Scholarship, which will be awarded to a student who will be attending a local junior college and is intended to cover educational expenses during their first year at school. Recipient must carry a minimum of 12 units to qualify. The payment is $500 per semester for a total of $1,000.

    The third scholarship is a $1,000 Vocational Scholarship, which will be awarded to a student who will be pursuing their education at a trade school or by taking trade-related courses at a community college. Auto mechanics, culinary arts, cosmetology and medical assisting are examples of studies that would qualify for this scholarship.

    The scholarships require that an official school transcript from the most recent semester must be submitted with the application. Applications are available at the high school Career Counseling Center. Completed applications and transcript must be received by April 15.     Local scholarship offered

    NORTH COUNTY -- Absolute Learning, a cognitive training center, invites high school seniors to compete for one $500 scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who has achieved academic success by overcoming a significant barrier to learning resulting from a learning disability, serious medical condition or psychological issues. The scholarship can be applied to community college, vocational school or a university.

    To be eligible, applicants must be able to document the learning issue and how they overcame the barriers to learning. Students must reside within 25 miles of Encinitas, have successfully completed three years of study at an accredited high school, have a cumulitive grade point average of 3.0 or better and expect or have received "notice of intent" to enroll in undergraduate college courses or have designated a certified vocational training program.

    Interested students should complete the Absolute Learning application form and mail it to Scholarship Committee, 285 N. El Camino Real, Suite 110, Encinitas, CA 92024. Forms are available at high school counseling offices, by logging on to http://www.absolutelearning.net or by calling Absolute Learning at (760) 632-6616. Deadline for receipt is June 1.

    SBT registration under way

    OCEANSIDE -- The School of Business and Technology is registering students for the 2007-08 school year.

    The campus is a free public charter high school open to all students in North County. Informational meetings will be held at the following times and locations:

    Local resident is college grad

    Matthew Storey of San Diego recently graduated from UC San Diego with a degree in political science/international relations. He is the son of Patty Storey of Oceanside and Howard Storey of Long Beach. He is a 1996 graduate of Murrieta Valley High School and plans to pursue a law degree.

    City offers King scholarships

    OCEANSIDE -- For the 14th year, the city of Oceanside, through its Community Service Commission, will sponsor the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships, awarded to graduating high school seniors for their first year of college.

    Applicants must be seniors living in Oceanside or attending Oceanside schools. More than $300,000 has been set aside for the scholarships since their inception, all from community donations. Scholarships can be used at community and four-year colleges.

    In addition to academic achievement and written faculty recommendations, scholarship winners should reflect King's legacy of service, integrity and commitment to excellence throughout their lives. As part of their application, candidates will be asked to write a brief essay describing how King's life has affected their own.

    Completed applications are due by April 13. Winners will be notified no later than May. More information and applications are available at high school counseling offices.

    OHS wrestling program seeks support

    'Night with the Stars' planned

    CARLSBAD -- Carlsbad High School's choral department will present "A Night with the Stars" concerts at 7 p.m. March 15 and 17 in the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center on campus, 3557 Monroe St.

    Directed by Christy Owen, the two advanced choirs will perform as groups and individuals. The Chamber Singers and Sound Express will sing everything from classics to contemporary songs, as well as each groups' competition set. A silent auction and opportunity drawing also will be held. Proceeds will help cover performance related costs throughout the school year.

    Tickets cost $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors, and will be available at the door.

    Cut-a-Thon planned

    RANCHO BERNARDO -- Ciao Bella Hair Salon, 12160 Alta Carmel Court, will hold a Cut-a-Thon from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 25 to raise money for abused and abandoned children in Zapallal, Peru. Haircuts will be $20, with all proceeds going to the children's home La Comunidad de Ninos Sagrada Familia to help clothe, feed and care for 600 children.

    The school was recently visited by Sophie Laing, a Poway resident and junior at La Jolla Country Day School. With help from the Community Service Department at her school, Sophie was able to make a cash donation to the home and take books and Christmas gifts to a dormitory of 6- to 9-year-old girls.

    Mt. Carmel senior earns scholarships

    RANCHO PENASQUITOS -- Brandon Burbach, a senior at Mt. Carmel High School, recently was awarded more than $25,000 in scholarships. He received a $10,000 Holiday Bowl Scholarship; was presented with three scholarships worth $5,000 each from Pacific Life, U.S. Bank and an anonymous donor; and received a $500 Better Business Bureau Torch Award Scholarship for an essay he wrote on the importance of ethics and morals in the workplace.
