Illegal immigrants want rights without responsibilities
By: WILLIAM LOLLI - Commentary: | ∞
The NCT front-page story ("Police policy targets criminal illegal immigrants, but could affect all," March 11) on Escondido's policy to press law enforcement with the ancillary duty of identifying illegal aliens focused on a person named Eva.
Eva's life was used as an intimate example of the impact of this new policy, which could result in Eva's deportation to Mexico.
The story illustrated that Eva was brought here illegally as a child of age 3, graduated from Escondido High, has a job and is raising three children. She is admittedly neither a citizen nor has made any effort at legal residency. She freely admits to driving without a license.
"If I get stopped and they send me to Mexico, what am I to do?" she is quoted as saying.
Her reaction is to be expected: She was brought here as an illegal alien, raised by illegal alien parents, taught by her parents and her societal associations, including the government school system, that she could do as she pleased.
She has been taught about her "rights" but nothing of her responsibilities, And since she is not a citizen, she has no responsibilities. Laws are for the "other people" and are things to be obeyed only if convenient.
Because of these circumstances, she is part of a vast number, a whole generation of people, who live under the benevolent shadow of an oppressive subclass status.
She is neither slave nor free, but for all her life has lived in a netherworld of partial freedom, yet constantly in fear.
As more and more people recognize the injustice of the continuing of her situation, the dehumanizing, un-American foundation of it, it is only right and just that she be deported.
Only then can she and others like her return to the U.S. as truly free people, through the obedience to and under the protection of our laws.
Anything less is to perpetuate slavery.

Eva has participated in getting an education at a cost of $129,000 of other people's money, and getting medical attention at an unknown cost of other people's money. If she has a Social Security Card for her job it most certainly is not hers, and she has three children who, if she was in Mexico as she should be, would be educated (sic) at Mexico’s dime and instead will each receive care at US taxpayer's money. She breaks the law by driving, has no insurance to cover her just debts should she have an accdent -- and complains she is being mistreated! The mind boggles…
Fix the Constitution wrote on Mar 20, 2007 10:23 PM:If these kids were not given immediate citizenship upon birth, I honestly think we'd see a decline in mom's who cross the border to have them. I wish the illegals would have some morals and dignity and go home without trying to have their families here.
David wrote on Mar 20, 2007 11:23 PM:My wife, a LEGAL immigrant, feels like she's been slapped in the face every day because of the "special" treatment these illegals get. When does it end? What will we endure before we fix the problem? Deport the lawbreakers, and make them come here legally. No EXCUSES!!!
Veritas wrote on Mar 21, 2007 12:18 AM:Right on, William. We all know the problem. We all know the solutions. Our Representatives do not have the guts to follow our laws and they sure as hades will not solve the problem.
Floyd wrote on Mar 21, 2007 2:50 AM:It would be relatively easy to sieze Baja California from Mexico, make it a possession of the USA, and send the illegal aliens there. That would solve a big part of California's problem, and future trespassers would find it easier to invade a possession instead of a State -- heck, Baja might even invite the illegals to come and stay for awhile! As a bonus, American citizens living in Baja would no longer be subject to Mexican rule which would ultimately mean a significant increase in their standard of living. And just wait until the developers discover the land is cheap and buildable -- our housing crisis could become a thing of the past! There's a lot to be said about responding to the invasion of illegal aliens by invading and seizing a part of their country of origin!!

Just think there are millions of them among us with the same culturally embedded lack of responsibility for any of their actions.

We just have to keep the stupid citizens asleep for a while longer and we will have achieved our ultimate goal. Si su puede! You are no longer a slave when you are the majority and majority rules. I know a few very smug 'Evas.' They know the next amnesty will take care of them. Problem solved. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

They will simply continue their lawless lifestyles. Nothing will have changed in their hearts and minds, they simply will have obeyed one law to get what they want, then afterwards, it will be business as usual.

I guess fanning flames with stories like the one mentioned sells more newspapers than doing their civic duty, oops I forgot, confidentiality.
Sanctuary City wrote on Mar 21, 2007 9:32 AM:The Escondido police chief is fostering a relationship with the Mexican illegal immigrant community. Meanwhile, calls to police about excessive noisy music, and about illegals sleeping behind businesses and in our neighborhoods are ignored. This American has no confidence in a police chief that panders to foreign nationals and interests, and berates the concerns of Americans. He should be fired for offending the American community in Escondido!

I must give the Minutemen credit for organizing and being active on these blogs. Having lost their dead-end jobs to illegal immigrants, they have nothing better to do. They are Republicans who don't want to talk about the war in Iraq or the so-called "war on terror" any more. It's easier to lie about and scapegoat Mexicans.
Mike the Marine wrote on Mar 21, 2007 10:23 AM:Just a comment on Pluto's comment. It appears anything anti-illegal sparks an attack on the Minutemen or the Republicans. This was a well written article that is full of common sense and the "old fashioned" attitude regarding a respect for the laws of the land, that illegals don't have, don't understand, and will never agree to. Pluto's primary comment is to inhibit free speech. Get real Pluto, this isn't Mexico, this is America.
Jason wrote on Mar 21, 2007 10:54 AM:My Go William don’t get anything started here you end your commentary with the words, “perpetuate slavery.” Now you have given the advocates of illegal immigration more ammo to say that they want, “Civil Rights” and that they are in the same position as black folks were in the 1950’s. Black folks were AMERICAN CITIZENS and illegal immigrants ARE NOT!!!!

Back then, Americans weren't even considering mass illegal immigration like what we have tolerated for the last 30 years and a socialist state that would service them. This amendment was never intended to grant citizenship to the baby of any foreign woman who stepped foot on American soil. This amendment has been twisted and misconstrued.

Press1 for English, Press 2 for Deportation wrote on Mar 21, 2007 6:30 PM:I personally love the idea of taking over Baja California and setting up a "neutral zone" for the illegals, but a solution that could actually be within the political feasibility of our cowardly politicians would be to send the responsible country a bill with each illegal returned. The bill would be based upon the number of illegals divided by the US expenditure for Border Patrol, court systems, etc. that the US taxpayers have to foot the bill for, divided by the number of illegals. Why should I have to pay just because certain foreign governments run their countries in such a corrupt manner that the majority of their citizens want to flee from their own country. Stop the invasion before some idiot (are you listening Bush?) gives the illegals citizenship and lets them vote.
my ancestors, like yours, were white invaders wrote on Mar 21, 2007 7:58 PM:Sorry, but Mr. Lolli’s writing here is atrocious, and his grasp of sociology is shameful. This article is nothing more than another attempt at further inflaming emotions to justify the rampant ‘fear of others’ in this area. Honestly, what does the use of this passage - “live under the benevolent shadow of an oppressive subclass status” - really mean? There is nothing “benevolent” about oppression, and if there is as Mr. Lolli suggests, then he certainly doesn’t make his case for it – he just spits it out, maybe because it ‘sounds’ good. Later he mentions that “Eva” is “neither slave nor free” but then ends his article with “[a]nything less is to perpetuate slavery”; he is saying that this woman is not a ‘slave’ but to maintain her presence here is to “perpetuate slavery”. Huh? Whose slavery, then, if not “Eva’s”? Mr. Lolli, again, failed to make his case; it ‘sounds’ good, but it is really a meaningless use of words. To me it is obvious that Mr. Lolli is attempting to throw terms together because they ‘sound good’; and possibly to make it ‘appear’ that he might care about this woman’s humanity, in a manner so that some might feel more ‘self-righteous’ in their own efforts at ‘oppression’ of those they fear, those they might call ‘invaders’ – like the woman “Eva”. Does Mr. Lolli really fully understand the sociology behind the “injustice of the continuing of her situation”? Can he fully understand the sociological impetus that had driven her parents to flee the Nation they were citizens of to a Nation where they were outsiders – ‘invaders’ – and though unwelcome to a ‘majority’ of that Nation’s citizenry still accepted as a cheap, but valuable, tool by the corporate hegemony? Does he grasp that deportation does nothing more than perpetuate the “injustice”, that it perpetuates the “oppressive subclass status”, that it perpetuates the slavery to the system in place? That the answers he seeks are just a little more complex? I wonder.
anotherview wrote on Mar 21, 2007 8:22 PM:Illegal aliens have no legal right to live and work in America. Every other modern country, including Mexico, controls who lives and works in the country. America must follow suit. Capturing and deporting illegal aliens conforms to American law. Hence, America can free itself of illegal aliens. But this desired outcome can happen only if the federal government begins the enforcement of existing law nationwide. In addition, the U. S. Congress must mandate that every employer use the present pilot system for checking employees and job applicants for their legal right to work in America. As well, the U. S. Congress must say No to amnesty for illegal aliens. Without the prospect of either a job or an amnesty, the illegal aliens will tend to self-deport (at their own expense), and the foreign nationals will tend not to migrate here illegally. In turn, the host of negative social, economic, and political impacts fostered by the presence of illegal aliens will moderate. For example, the number of criminal illegal aliens will decrease. America already has enough criminals. As another example, the yearly $400 million the State of California spends on illegal alien females giving birth will drop. As a third example, the economic axiom of supply and demand certainly applies to labor as a factor of production. Without an illegal alien workforce, employers will adjust by introducing efficiencies and mechanization. Employers will also offer higher wages, where necessary, to induce Americans to do the jobs that illegal aliens now do. Jobs will open for citizens. America can do okay without illegal aliens, and will prosper all the more.
Alf wrote on Mar 21, 2007 9:12 PM:In some respects, "Eva" represents the worst of American culture. When the Constitution was written, there was no need to enumerate the responsibilities that accompanied each and every right, because it was part of the way they lived. It was as obvious as as the exhalation that followed the inhalation, they were bound together. Somewhere along the way a disconnect occurred such that the attendant responsibilities to the rights were forgotten. It is time to re-connect them.
Mary wrote on Mar 24, 2007 9:40 AM:We legal citizens have it just the opposite as "Eva" -- no rights, but plenty of responsibilities! We pay full taxes, keep our communities clean and we obey the law. Question: What kind of a nation treats foreigners who don't pay taxes or obey its laws better than it treats citizens who DO pay taxes and obey the law? Answer: A nation that is not going to be a nation much longer.
NOT TRUE!! wrote on Mar 25, 2007 8:20 AM:Give them the rights to have the responsibility and you will see that this is not true. We need to allow those already here to apply for legalization and then they will begin to pay taxes and happily participate in all the other responsibilities. I say give them a chance. I say legalize not criminalize.
Alf wrote on Mar 26, 2007 7:55 AM:You say to "legalize not criminalize", "NOT TRUE!!". No one is criminalizing these people except themselves. It is the person committing the criminal act of entering the U.S. illegally that makes them a criminal. Blaming the law or those who enforce the immigration law is like blaming the cop who cites you for doing 65 in a 25 zone, it makes no sense. There are others that have pointed this out, "NOT TRUE!!", but there is a right way and a wrong way, a LEGAL way and an ILLEGAL way to enter the United States. If someone wants the rights, privileges and responsibilities of a citizen of this country, they do so in a legal fashion. Your statement "We need to allow those already here (my interjection - illegally) to apply for legalization and then they will begin to pay taxes" sounds like several things, extortion by illegals who are not in the best of bargaining positions, complete disregard for our laws and disregard for the rule of law. Of the criminal acts, extortion - allow me to get legal status while I am currently illegal and then I'll pay taxes - does not bode well for the person to be allowed to become a citizen. That is, shall we say, starting off on the wrong foot.
Alfonso wrote on Mar 26, 2007 9:05 PM:Excellent letter from Lolli. "NOT TRUE" is an example of our problem. We cannot let them stay and give them rights, they have stolen the opportunity that others are waiting for legally. I refuse to agree to reward "line cutters", frauds, and those who disobey our laws. If we need more immigrant labor, let it come from the 200+ immigrating countries, not just Latino nations. We cannot ignore their illegal presence any more than we can ignore thieves, cheaters and frauds that otherwise are in jail learning about "responsibilities". Should we let all of our law breakers out of jail so they can pay taxes and contribute to society? I think not. The reasoning behind the pro-illegal, amnesty groups all falls into this vein of thought. They want special treatment, they want to be recognized as IMMIGRANTS instead of illegal aliens, and they want to defraud America into citizenship and benefits. I say no way Jose. Let our labor needs be met by those who immigrate legally, from all countries who want to participate, at reasonable quotas. Change the 14th amendment so that anyone here illegally is unable to "anchor" themselves to our country illegally, with the intent to steal the benefits granted to citizens and/or their guardians. So, speed up the legal immigration process for temporary labor, secure the borders and treat illegal aliens with respect, but in a manner that would discourage illegal entry, not encourage it. Great job Mr. Lolli!
